But first, here's the thing: I'm going to wait until the DX10 cards come out. But I'm assuming that the prices for those will be near the range today's cutting edge cards on sale are, so just to see what I'll be getting I would like recommendations on what to get for a new comp.
I already have a lot of reusable stuff so it should cut down on the price. I already have:
- Hard Drives
- Monitor
- DVD-RW drive
- Sound card
- Keyboard + mouse
So the only new things I need are motherboard, cpu, RAM, power supply, computer case, and video card.
I've heard nice things about the Antec P180 case, so I'll probably try to get that one. And a very decent power supply would also be nice. And if possible 2 gigs of ram.
So:
1. Recommend me a new machine with no max budget.
2. Recommend me one with a max 1000 USD budget.
Recommend me a new comp

Budget be damned? hmm... Dual Clovertown Xeons. No clue for price, they aren't out yet, but probably close to $900-1k each. Now if you can choke down that, the board needed to run it will cost you another $400-500, video card would be another $600. And the RAM has to be FB-DIMMs. 4GB of that (why the hell not, eh?) will cost $600. Plus case and PSU, you're looking at around $4k.
That's insane though.
Less insane would be:
Core 2 Extreme QX6700 $1000
ASUS P5W DH DELUXE/WIFI-AP $270
2GB DDR2-800 RAM $230
Scythe Ninja $50
Seasonic M12 700W $210
Antec Solo $100
8800 GTX $600
--
Total: $2500 or so.
Solo is choosen over the P180 because it's a pain to find a PSU that actually reaches to all the necessary connectors in a P180. This is most apparent with the MB power cable and the EPS12V cable.
$1k budget:
Core 2 Duo E6300 (maybe E4300 when you get it. Should still overclock like a beast, and you start off with a lower FSB for that) $180
MSI P965 Platinum $135
2GB DDR2-800 RAM $230
Seasonic S12 430W $100
Antec Solo $100
Vid card of your choice: <$250
--
Total: $1000 or so.
Antec Solo again, same reason. The E4300 should be about $20 cheaper largely because at stock speed, it's slower than the E6300 (FSB issues at stock). The S12 430 is what I have. Quiet and good. There is no combination on decent parts that will let you get a nVidia 8800 into this price range.
What I have: pimps own thread
total cost: $1350 or so, including shipping, for the new parts (same parts you're going to be getting). Switching out for a 8800 GTS will add another 150 or so to that.

No, not really.Ace Pace wrote:

I have a GF4 Ti4800 and I need to upgrade. Badly. But the first DX10 cards are apprently pretty close, so instead of buying a current gen card, it might be better to wait a little bit for the first of the next gen to come out.
Besides, I heard that the Nvidia 8-series are pretty extreme.
