{Fatal System Error}

Post by Max »

I was removing spy/mal/ware from my PC last night, and I all of the sudden got this fatal system error message. I have no clue how to fix it.

STOP: c000021a {Fatal System Error}
The Windows Logon Process System process terminated of
0x80000007 (0x00000000 0x00000000).
The System has been shut down.

Has anyone seen this before, or know how to go around it to fix it? My laptop is a Toshiba Portege R200, and didn't come with a CD/DVD drive, so even if I could find my XP disc, I couldn't use it.

Any help would be appreciated.

What program were you using to remove the spyware? Perhaps you wound up deleting some actual useful .dll by mistake?

Googling the error message turns up this thread. Unless there's someone that knows more than me, you might be forced to reinstall xp. Or do a system restore if you can somehow get into safe mode. I'd suggest creating a live linux cd and get off all your valuable data if possible first.

I can't get into any mode, safe or otherwise. I can't even do a "boot last known good configuration". It comes up with that same blue screen after every attempt to logon.

What is a live linux cd? Can I put it on an SD card and boot it that way, since I have no CD/DVD drive?

No CD Drive in the laptop? Hrm. . .I'm not sure what you could do then. You might be able to do something with floppies if you can get a copy of Slackware, but if you're a linux novice you might be boned. A live linux CD though is a cd-rom running linux that you can boot up straight from the CD, no installation required. Otherwise it sounds like your only hope is to reinstall Windows.

The only media drive I have on the physical computer aside from the actual HDD is an SD slot. No floppy..no CD/DVD...

Thats why I was wondering if there is something I can do short of buying some sort of media drive...

Quite common for Ultraportables, which is what the Portege range is supposed to be, not to have an optical drive.

You should be able to boot from the SD card, provided you've got a version of Toshiba's BIOS that supports booting from the card, and you have an SD card with a bootable image on it.

Advice for the M200 tablet PC. Not sure how much of that is applicable this is to your R200, and whether or not you needed to have created a bootable SD card beforehand.

Failing that, buy an external USB CD-ROM drive. They're not that expensive.
