Thinkpads fight: R60 Vs T42

Post by Mobius »

I need to change my laptop and i'd like to find something pretty easy to carry around(my former PC: a VAIO A317M i gave to my mother was a 17screen behemoth weighting 8 pounds)

My budget is 1300€ great max (i lost the auction on a x41 on Ebay)
so here are my option at 1300€
Brand new
R60 15inches 1400*1050
Core Duo T2xxx
80go 5400rpm
Mobility X1400
1go ram
DVD-RW

Refurbed T42 14'inches 1400*1050
PM 1.6
Firegl T2 128mb
40go 7200rpm
512 Ram
DVD-RW
4.5h battery
still on garanty

and i'm torn between the more powerful R60 and the traveller's friendly but i don't play that much (the only next game that is appealing to me is BF2142 and i'm not even sure to buy it since i must feed my DS)
So the question is:

Is this a fair price for the T42 and should i go for it?
(in Belgium the first price for a thinkpad (T43 with a X300) is 1600€

I'd say T42- the R series from what I've seen look rather thick/bulky compared to my T22.

I'd suggest the T42. If you don't need that much ram or hard drive space, it sounds like your best option, since you don't seem to mind whether it's refurbed or not. (Though newer machines are almost always the best bet).

You can always upgrade RAM/HDD later.

I'd make sure the T42 has a decent screen resolution- 1024x768 is kind of annoying to work with.

I disagree. Both of my laptops have 1024x768, and I find them considerably less annoying than my higher-resolution desktop LCDs. Ultra-high res LCDs are overrated.

I find 1200x800 and 1440x960 to be ideal in terms of resolution.

1024x768 is just not enough for me - I run at 1400x1050

Well, Today C2D just arrive in belgium, so i think i'll bite the bullet use my Pocket PC and his foldable keyboard so i can spare more and get a T60 with the the mag-alloy casing, the Vista readyness and the 3-years warranty ....
