When I saw the last one, it got crazier and crazier towards the end, a load of Borg cubes jumping in and then getting shot to bits? It got very hard to follow. It's a pity the Federation never actually brings that kind of firepower to any real engagements. I saw for one of the videos some guy saying the Enterprise-E would waste an ISD in minutes, but then I'd expect that from someone who thinks ISDs don't have shields.

That would be the USS Prometheus (or another ship of the same class), which we first saw in VOY "Message in a Bottle", IIRC. One of the few episodes I actually caught part of after the second season.General Schatten wrote:But, in the video that Adrian posted, what is that one ship that splits into pieces, is it the USS Voltron or USS Megazord?

Yeah, that was pretty sad. It's funny how the Trek writers clearly took their cues from cheesy Saturday morning cartoons rather than any sort of legitimate design logic.General Schatten wrote:I'm woefully ignorant to Star Trek (except for the bits and pieces I've picked up from around here and I do intend to find TOS on video or something, eventually)... It was a pity the Prometheus only appeared in 'Message in a Bottle' and 'Endgame'. I wish it had appeared in DS9 a couple of times, I guess it wouldn't have been very good in large fleet battles because of the risk one or more sections being destroyed; instead it was more suited to the kind of battle it found itself in while controlled by the two incompetent holograms.
It's true what it says on Wiki about Peter David's 'ST:New Frontier' about it poking fun at ST, it has Shelby wondering why the bridge is exposed in a dome at the top of the ship instead of in the centre for max protection. She puts it down to tradition. If the events in Nemesis don't teach Satrfleet a lesson or two in ship design, nothing will.

You guys are all wrong about that video it's the most kickass video ever, better than sex.
Don't you see, the Emperor wanted to draw all of Starfleet and Earthforce and the Rebellion out in one decisive battle. That's why the ISD's barely shoot at all. See, that is the Emperor coming in on the Executor with a fleet of captured Borg cubes ready to kick some ass. So the ISD's are ordered to just sit there, and of course the TIE's are remote controlled. Of course the Emperor doesn't stand a chance since shields make Trek ships invulnerable, but he can go after the B5 and Rebels and hold them hostage.
See, you just need to look at it a different way that's all. Oh yeah, when the Prometheus splits apart, you're supposed to go "holy shit that looks so fucking cool they're about to kick ass" instead of "damn that's boring." Just takes a different way of looking at things. Now watch more Star Trek.

Cookies & beer!
fun/fantasy movies existed before the overrated Star Wars came out. What made it seem 'less dark' was the sheer goofy aspect of it: two robots modeled on Laurel & Hardy, and a smartass outlaw with bigfoot co-pilot and their hotrod pizza-shaped ship, and they were sucked aboard a giant Disco Ball. -adw1

One of Johan Alm's movies, making it probably the oldest movie you have.Lord Poe wrote:Star Wars vs Star Trek vs Battlestar Galactica vs Babylon 5 Spacebattles wankage:
Poe, you do have to realize these movies aren't about realism, they are about what the maker finds fun. Its not all that fun to watch a movie where one side gets its ass handed to it without putting up any fight. Course this particular movie qualifies quite nicely since the "Bad Guy" fleet did pretty much nothing. Anyway, to each his own. You don't like it. Should check the remaining VS movies at SB.com. They are fairly random on whom is portrayed with the most firepower. One movie has 3 X-Wings and a Nebulon-B blowing up DS9.

Is is "fun" to make/watch a movie where Bambi kicks Godzilla's ass?Alyeska wrote:Poe, you do have to realize these movies aren't about realism, they are about what the maker finds fun. Its not all that fun to watch a movie where one side gets its ass handed to it without putting up any fight.

To expand on this, I honestly don't particularly care if the Enterprise can kick a Star Destroyer's ass or not when it comes to fan videos. You want the Feds to win? Sure go ahead, but make it fun and exiting. Have the battle be tense, with both sides exchanging fire and taking loses, with the climax being a point were the battle could go either way and the victors just barely manage to scrape by. That's fun, it's entertaining.Darth Servo wrote:Is is "fun" to make/watch a movie where Bambi kicks Godzilla's ass?Alyeska wrote:Poe, you do have to realize these movies aren't about realism, they are about what the maker finds fun. That shit I posted were an Imperial Fleet just stands around while the Feds come-in and kick ass with impunity is boring and stupid. The author might as well have put up a video of him masturbating to a screenshot from one of thsoe DS9 episodes with bigass Federation fleets.

Generally speaking, when you make a movie you're supposed to identify with someone. So you pick certain individual characters and you focus on them. In order to make the movie interesting, you then give them challenges to overcome, a quest to complete, or some kind of personal growth to accomplish.
If it's some kind of martial movie, the battles should be challenging for your hero character in some way, either spiritually or tactically (or both). So when someone makes a movie in which you're supposed to identify with group A that's effortlessly kicking the shit out of group B, that is pure wanking, no question about it.
If you wanted to be realistic and still challenging despite a very one-sided matchup, you would either take the weaker side as your viewpoint or you would create some contrived scenario where the power inequality is balanced out in some way. There is just no way to make a movie where your hero effortlessly crushes all foes without being a wanker.
