New Essential Guide to Aliens

Post by Ender »

Anyone pick this up yet? I saw it at B&N and flipped through it. I saw nothing of note really - largely a rehash of what we knew from previous sources. Some new stuff, but nothing revolutionary. But as a redeeming feature, the art is fucking great.

Indeed; I'll probably pick it up this Christmas for the art alone. Still, there isn't that much new there, and some of the writing isn't that great. The Acklay article, for example, was rather poorly put together, IMO.

You're getting your books confused. The WOTC book is the Alien Anthology. While the one being discussed is the New Essential Guide to Aliens.

I heard that there was going to be a bit of information concerning Yoda's species created for the book (but not anything on the level of giving it a name). Any word on that?

I can vouch for the art, and I may be picking this up since I have none of the previous editions.

Aliens. If only you could hear yourselves. The very name is racist.

I'd stomach the racism if humans were included as one of the "alien" races in the book :)

Well, they are in the standard core book at least  .

Do you mean a Yaddle reference to villages? Or actual new info (Which I presume you do mean, unlikely as it is due to the Lucas embargo on Yoda's origins & species)

Are there any samples of the artwork?

There's no new information on Yoda's species, Humans are an entry, and you can find a decent sampling of the artwork on the Wooki.

From what I hear at TFN, this volume takes stereotyping to whole new levels of ridiculousness. Balosaurs, for example, are a species of drug dealers with their economy centered around Death Sticks.

What are they saying about Besalisks then? They are natural scouts before spawning, then they naturally develop chef skills to become diner fry cooks before finally dying?

I understand the need to link things with the movies, but this is just ridiculous.

Apparently the author is a psychologist, and determined the nature of each species by psychoanalyzing the on-screen examples.
