Acts, Chapter 2 wrote:1. And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.
2. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.
3. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them
4. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
5. And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven.
6. Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language.
7 And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galileans?
8. And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born? ( Verses 9-11 list the nationalities of the men)
12 And they were all amazed, and were in doubt, saying one to another, What meaneth this?
13. Others mocking said, These men are full of new wine.
I've been to churches were they 'speak in tongues' to 'give God's message to the people'. Funny how each church is full of people who've possibly never left the state, whose only experience with foriegn language is high-school French/Spanish. Why would they need to speak in tongues, when not one of them really speaks anything but English?
Just another reason I'm not in a church congregation....

Me: Nope, that's why I have you around to tell me.
Nitram: You -are- beautiful. Anyone tries to tell you otherwise kill them.

General Trelane (Retired) wrote:I think Invictus was refering to the story of pentecost in the Book of Acts. The apostles received the Holy Spirit and were then able to 'speak in tongues', which meant, in that story, that foreigners were each able to hear and understand the speech in their own language.
In other words, the story of pentecost portrays speaking in tongues as radically different from how moderm Pentecostals interpret it. Especially considering that NOBODY can understand them.
Quite a few Christian denominations feel it is exactly that - a deception of Satan.

Now I did a job. I got nothing but trouble since I did it, not to mention more than a few unkind words as regard to my character so let me make this abundantly clear. I do the job. And then I get paid.- Malcolm Reynolds, Captain of Serenity, which sums up my feelings regarding the lawsuit discussed here.

Speaking of juggling snakes by fundies... A friend of mine has a snake recovered from the fundies. It's name... PK (for preacher killer) unfortunately the incident didn't sway any fundies beliefs as it was said that the preacher didn't have enough faith....

Which as far as I can tell fits the holy rollers to a T. They almost never have anyone "interpreting" when I've visited one of their services.
