FF V Advance (GBA)

Post by rhoenix »

Since I made a thread about FF IV for the GBA before, I figured I'd make this thread too.

From preliminary reports I've been reading on the gamefaqs.com forums (not the best source, but at least it gives one an idea) about the Japanese version, there aren't the bugs and glitches in this port that existed with the port of FF IV, which is excellent.

With four new Jobs are being added (Cannoneer - combat Alchemist basically, Gladiator - abusive melee abilities, Necromancer - like the Blue Mage only scarier, and Oracle - highest magic stat, and some interesting abilities), as well as a new bonus dungeon and rewritten Job names and skills (Lancer is now Dragoon, Sorcerer is now Mystic Knight, Bare is now Freelancer, etc.), this certainly looks like a worthwhile purchase.

I've pre-ordered this game along with the corresponding guide from Amazon, and I should be receiving it sometime between tomorrow and the following Monday. If there's interest, I'll keep updating with what I find, since the nostalgic fanboy in me finds this more interesting than FF XII.

I don't have mine yet, as frankly FFXII is higher on my priority list (I'm a shameless graphics whore; that, and XII is new). The new jobs sound pretty interesting. I'm particularly looking forward to the Oracle, as any magic not based on the Tao is automatically false.

This is because FFVA is a straight port to the GBA, whereas FFIVA was a port of the Wonderswan version with rewritten menus.

FFVI can be expected to keep up the same quality.

I'm dead excited about this one, because FFV is one of my favourite FF games in evers.

Meh. A friend of mine brought over FFXII to show me how "impressive it was(n't). The graphics look a bit better, but the License system I don't like the execution of - though I do like the idea. Combat is interesting, but real-time combat of that nature was done far better in games like Summoner 2 for the PS2 (which I heartily recommend, by the way).

*chuckle*

The Oracle's few saving graces, now that I've the game guide (and no game yet), are in that it can get an AP+ ability, which gives a character 1.5x the AP per battle, and the class itself boasts very high magic power - with few useful in-class abilities to use it on. This is a definite candidate to have a strong secondary magic ability...like Summoning, or if you're a bit further, Dark Arts.

I read as such on the gamefaqs.com forums, but I didn't put any stock into it. If this was a direct port that was rewritten, this makes me quite happy.

And impatient - Amazon told me I'd be getting my game guide after the game, and I got the game guide yesterday. With no game. The universe has a sense of humor.

Though I had a few issues with FFVI, it was one of my favorites of the series - I'm looking forward to playing it again, especially as a portable version.

Most definitely. I've contended with a friend that if FFV were reworked with fancy summoning effects, flashy effects, and all that as a graphically comparably title to today's standards while still keeping the game mechanics intact, I believe it would be one of the best of the series again today. Even so, I'm just glad to play it again.

However, it does make me wonder when/if we'll see games like Chrono Trigger or 7th Saga come out for the GBA, or DS.
