Well there is an upside to the Black Death. As a result of my drastic cost cutting measures i am now making a shit tonne of money now that the Black Death has mostly past.
And Milan has just won The Worst Decision In The Wooooooorld! award.
Milan, reduced to just 2 regions in the Switzerland/Germany area, their choices of who to attack are:
To the North: The Holy Roman Empire- Had just 1 territory for ages, but recently managed to nab one off Poland. Just past them is Poland itself, once great, now ravaged by the Mongols and with the perpetual threat of a dominant England (Who remembers a grudge) on their Western borders, reduced to a mere sahdow of what they once were.
To the South: 2 Venetian provinces, cut off from the rest of thier faction by Hungarian forces. The Papal States have expanded a little, but beyond them are the Excommunicated Scicilians ripe for picking after being beaten off by, and having most of their armies more decimated, by the Papal States.
To the West: England and only England. Stretching from Portugal to the Milanese borders and North of them into Scandanavia, in almost complete control of the North European coast and now pushing across Africa into Egypt to gain a foothold for future crusades in the Holy Land. The Popes favourites and in almost complete control of the college of Cardinals, weakened by the Black Death but remobilising in Europe at a horryfying pace so as to launch fresh attacks on the Mongrols. Have squashed all but one of the (supposed) mighty nations that have wronged them, Catholic or not.
Who would you attack? I guess i don't have to tell you which option the foolish Milanese picked.

Do the old ~ console codes from RTW like "toggle_fow" still work? I know it's a cheat, but I really hate the fact that I don't even know where a city is until I explore the area. It's not as if campaigning armies back then didn't have maps telling them where major cities were. I haven't had time to get out to the store today and pick up a copy.

It did help that the Scicilians had a death wish and attacked Rome.Dartzap wrote:The Papal States do stuff? I'm on Medium/Easy And I have yet to see one of the popes march out of Rome.
2000AD's sneaky tip to keep in the good books of the Pope:
Position a diplomat next to Rome. Capture and pillage a Catholic town. Pope gets annoyed. Give Pope a slice of the loot (1000 works nice). Watch Pope become happy again.
I've taken to calling them the Paypal States now.

Custom battle, Greeks versus Mongols:
Latinkon about to charge
(Gripe about the Latinkon- shouldn't their be Latinkon equipped with much more modern armor for the High/ Late period? They're Western troops, even by CA's crappy "obsolete" logic about Constantinople)
Kataphractoi at rest
Army before battle
Charging
The screencaps would be better quality if I had a real screenshot program and wasn't just using Paint to Save As "Print Scrn" as .jpegs.
It's surprisingly hard to take good screencaps too.

Gonna pick up the game tomorrow, and I'll start off as the only Medieval Roman Empire that mattered...the German one!*glares at Vympel*
"The rifle itself has no moral stature, since it has no will of its own. Naturally, it may be used by evil men for evil purposes, but there are more good men than evil, and while the latter cannot be persuaded to the path of righteousness by propaganda, they can certainly be corrected by good men with rifles."
The "Holy Roman Empire" was neither Holy, nor Roman, nor an Empire.Lonestar wrote:Gonna pick up the game tomorrow, and I'll start off as the only Medieval Roman Empire that mattered...the German one!*glares at Vympel*
(I'll be playing them after the Eastern Roman Empire, though)

That would be the classical definition, yeah. Some people take exception to it, but I find they are much quieter after you kill 60,000 people and put their heads on pikes. If you have enough men to carry all those pikes, its even better.Lonestar wrote:It will be when I'm done with it.Vympel wrote:

Marcus Aurelius: ...the Swedish S-tank; the exception is made mostly because the Swedes insisted really hard that it is a tank rather than a tank destroyer or assault gun
Ilya Muromets: And now I have this image of a massive, stern-looking Swede staring down a bunch of military nerds. "It's a tank." "Uh, yes Sir. Please don't hurt us."

You might be able to give them better armor by upgrading it, which you can do in a skirmish by hitting the shield button giving a unit up to a gold shield. I'm pretty sure I heard that in M2:TW upgrading armor now changes the armor on the unit on the battlefield. I think that is why in the IGN faction previews they mention that Feudal Knights can have mail to plate armor.Vympel wrote: (Gripe about the Latinkon- shouldn't their be Latinkon equipped with much more modern armor for the High/ Late period? Lil update.
Long time the HRE in the east launched another attack. I let them for now, as I got other worries, as the Danes invaded me from the north (or tried anyway). I steamrolled towards their capital and the sacking of it gave me the much needed money to keep up my upkeep. They still hold some territories to the east and I have no idea who holds Scandinavia right now. They don't seem to have huge armies left, but they have a huge fleet with better ships as well which are causing a lot of trouble.
Portugal went quiet and after lots of their nagging, I accepted their peacedeal when it turned out Spain became a power to be recon with. I captured their northern city border, barely managed to fend off a rather unexpected quick counterattack from a large army, only to see there are 2 more large armies incoming. Next turns will be interesting.
Oh and scouting the britisch islands showed that half is Scottisch, one turned rebel and the Englisch themselve only hold 3 regions. This will ease up the victory conditions.

Yes, the armor of units is visibly different on the battlefield depending on their upgrades- a very nice feature. However, Latinkon can only undergo one upgrade, it seems- going from Skirmish.NRS Guardian wrote: You might be able to give them better armor by upgrading it, which you can do in a skirmish by hitting the shield button giving a unit up to a gold shield. In fact, it looks like all the upgrades in Skirmish only go up one- for Turkey and Byzantium anyway ...

God, the Pope's an idiot. The Danes lay siege to one of my newly captured Rebel cities (Bruge) while my King with his mighty army is less than a turn away, I smash them and then immediately lay siege to neighbouring Antwerp, and the Pope threatens me to with excommunication.
What's good for the Danes is apparently not good for me, eh?
A Crusade was called against Antioch, but Venice got there way before me (no surprise). My crusader army is now stuck next to Constantinople with nothing to do. I'm going to move it in to the Holy Land anyway, somehow. I just hired a mercenary galley for the purpose- a nice feature.

I have noticed that when the Pope says "Stop attacking this faction" they also stop attacking me, so i guess he sends a simular order to the rival faction as well.
