Tyre and Hindsight.

Tyre and Hindsight.
The passage Ez. 26:1-14 whites that Nebuchadrezzar will destroy Tyre and no one will ever live there again. We all know that people still live in Tyre today. Now, much of what I read indicates that the Ezekiel passages were written after the fact. How could the authors make such a mistake while writing from hindsight?[/quote]

Re: Tyre and Hindsight.
The version I've got says it'll never be rebuilt, so that might only apply to the original inhabitants of the city and their decedents. Anybody who lives there might (technically) be living in a different city on the same spot, named the same thing.Kitsune wrote:The passage Ez. 26:1-14 whites that Nebuchadnezzar will destroy Tyre and no one will ever live there again. But very good catch!

Still, if they were writing this after the fact, you'd think they'd realize that using such semantics to justify their assertion makes them look like shitty prophets. The version I've got says it'll never be rebuilt, so that might only apply to the original inhabitants of the city and their decedents. Okay, this is what it says:
New Oxford Annotated Bible And Apocrypha wrote:26.1-28.19 Oracles against Tyre. Tyre is to be destroyed by Nebuchadnezzar. 1-6: An announcement of the judgment. Tyre is judged for gloating over the fall of jerusalem, a commercial rival and for looking forward to taking over the city's trade. 1: Both the (partially preserved) Hebrew and Septuagint texts date the passage several months before Jerusalem's fall, anticipating it as having occurred already (v. 2). 7-17: Nebuchadnezzar will besiege the island city, which lay half a mile offshore from the mainland city, after destroying the outlying settlements on the mainland. In fact, Nebu besieged the island of Tyre (after the mainland fell) for 13 years. Tyre lost the war, but it was not destroyed or pillaged (as prophesied v.12). This state of affairs is addressed in 29.17-21.
29.17-21:Egypt as "wages" for Nebuchadnezzar, instead of Tyre. Ezekiel's latest dated oracle, April 26, 571BCE. This unique passage amends the Tyre prophecies (26.12) in light of subsequent events. Nebu will get sufficient booty from Egypt to compensate for his lack of booty from the seige of Tyre. The followers of Ezekiel thus understood "unfulfilled" prophecy as showing God's mysterious freedom, not as discrediting Ezekiel. 21: Horn may refer to a reestablished Davidic monarch in Israel.

I feel I should expand a bit on what the book is, it's an authoritative current translation that has notes on verses and passages and what the historical context and interpretation is most likely.
The apocryphal texts are included in it because they help shed light on the various beliefs going on in the religions at various times and therefore give a more complete look at ancient judaism and christianity through the ages.
The bit I quoted is the notation from the passage you were asking about, it's not from the Apocrypha.

Ok, it sounds like you are overtranslating what is written. I looked to see if I hads missed anything.
