Any Real Difference?

Post by Kitsune »

Assuming the events happened like the did in the Old Testament, the conquering of the Cannite lands were an extermely bloody affair. Is there any different between them and Hitlers quest for Lebensraum?

Scale? Really that's the only thing I can come up with. There were simply far fewer people to kill.

The only other thing I can think of is 'they got away with it'.

It does help point out how ridiculous it is to claim a bronze age religious text that crows about how glorious rape and murder is as a source on morality.

In modern morality, generally such acts are considered wrong.
Now, people (even in those days) could figure out that murder was wrong. Were there any other cultures (at the time) which would consider the acts of anhihalating the Cannites as evil?

You know, that might be it. I mean, what other civilization honestly gave a shit about anyone besides itself? People have to have a high standard of living before they even begin to consider things like human right for all. That's a very recent development in human history. Most of the time it was every country for itself.

Wasn't Buddhism developed around 600 BCE and promotes enlightenment?

Yes, but afaik following Buddhism isn't an absolute dictate. It acknowledges that men are fallible and walking the Buddha's path isn't something everyone is going to be able to do. So if you don't think you're up to following Buddhist tenets, no big.

Actually, the Old Testament "promised land" doctrine was worse than Hitler's lebensraum doctrine. Hitler intended to conquer those territories and drive out certain undesirables while subjugating them for use by the Chosen People. The Biblical Jews intended to conquer those territories and exterminate everyone so that they could move in.
