Do you have any idea how truly unnatural it is for people to wait until their mid-20s (which is considered early for marriage nowadays) before they have sex?wolveraptor wrote:Do you think teenagers ought to be having sex?Hillary wrote:Why?Kitsune wrote:Chastity is a great concept

So who, in your opinion, should practice it? Really, that gets old REAL fast, at least for me. It's also greatly limited in terms of variety.

According to the US Census, the median age for first marriage was 27 for males and 25 for females in the USA for the period from 2000 to 2003.
So let's just say it's 26. That's a long time to wait.

And I hear the potential for child abuse is zero if nobody has children.Hillary wrote:So who, in your opinion, should practice it? People should not be stopped from doing what's natural to them, and that includes teenagers; that's why proper sex education is what's more important to teach them to be responsable and safe.

Most people enjoy sex greatly, otherwise people would only have it when they want babies. I am just trying to not badmouth those who decide to although I considere it extremely rare and not practical. Most who think they will not are just fooling themselves. I would not be suprised if the pope has not shagged a few nuns (maybe even a few choir boys)Hillary wrote:So who, in your opinion, should practice it? Or, if it's easier, who shouldn't?
I agree that mandatory sex ed in school is more effective. I believe those who are not educated in it are more likely to engage in it earlier and with less safety precautions.

I never said they should wait until they're married. I meant to imply that they should wait until it's legal, i.e. 18.Darth Wong wrote:Do you have any idea how truly unnatural it is for people to wait until their mid-20s (which is considered early for marriage nowadays) before they have sex?
I don't think it's necessarily vital that they wait, just that teenagers are often too immature or irresponsible to practice safe sex that doesn't ruin their relationship. I don't have any hard evidence of this, though. However, since they will be having sex, they obviously need education.

Well, where you seem to be saying that they're making a personal choice to be chaste because of their beliefs, I would suggest that since we're talking about chaperoned little kids in a doubtless heavily conservative community, it's 'choice' only insofar as brainwashing, guilt, fearmongering, and parental/community pressure can produce.Magus wrote:Well...Granted this is true, but does one not choose what influence culture has? Christians who abstain because they are Christian are not having cultural effects foisted unfairly upon them - they choose to abstain because they hold a personal value with the traditional teachings and viewpoints of Christianity. That's a personal reason if ever there was one.
I'd be careful to associate the decisions of an adult to follow, say, a vow of celibacy, with a vow of chastity coaxed out of a child with promises of a new dress and a shiny ring, and who doesn't know anything about sex anyway and has probably had a lot of facts that would have been useful in said decision censored for them.
Note: I'm semi-retired from the board, so if you need something, please be patient.
Well sure. I suppose what I was getting at was the children have been reliably having sex behind their parents' backs and wishes since..well...forever.Lagmonster wrote: I'd be careful to associate the decisions of an adult to follow, say, a vow of celibacy, with a vow of chastity coaxed out of a child with promises of a new dress and a shiny ring, and who doesn't know anything about sex anyway and has probably had a lot of facts that would have been useful in said decision censored for them.

Waiting that long for me to have sex is inconceivable. At 21, I simply had to lose my virginity despite being closeted and all that. Sooner or later, your biological imperatives take over.Darth Wong wrote:According to the US Census, the median age for first marriage was 27 for males and 25 for females in the USA for the period from 2000 to 2003.
So let's just say it's 26. That's a long time to wait.

Let me state it differently then, there are at least reasons behind abstaining from sex. I am more looking at arguing against a jump in everybodies bed type of morals.Hillary wrote:In other words, chastity isn't a great concept.

So 2 teens should be jailed if they have sex? Or how could it be "illegal"?wolveraptor wrote:I never said they should wait until they're married. I meant to imply that they should wait until it's legal, i.e. 18.
Here, children are getting "the talk" in school at the age of 12, mandatory.
If you want to have it with you child first, act before that. Most loose virginity in their mid-teens, and I was considered a very late one with 18 (thus to being a nerd with too much time on the PC)
I can't see the point in that fuss about chastity. It seems like that "drive a car once you're 16, join the army with 18 but don't drink beer until 21" crap.
A minute's thought suggests that the very idea of this is stupid. A more detailed examination raises the possibility that it might be an answer to the question "how could the Germans win the war after the US gets involved?" - Captain Seafort, in a thread proposing a 1942 'D-Day' in Quiberon Bay
