The middle one draws back a battle hammer, so he's getting ready to hit the Chief, at least two on the left aim pistols, one on the right with a hammer draws it over his head (probably to run in), and a couple on the right with only pistols out start moving back, probably to get a better shot.

So not all of them flinched. Just some.

Damn you and your analysis. I like the idea of the gigantic apes armed with huge grenade launcher-swords flinching at the mere sight of a man with a body count in the thousands.

I've never really understood why people bitch about CGI previews of games when the producers aren't claiming its anything else. I loved this, especially considering the original approach.

Presumably the male kid at the beginning was John before he was abducted by Keyes and the good Doctor.

I'm pretty sure the whole video is CGI, I don't see how it can be anything else.

How could it be John? They kidnapped the SPARTANs when they were infants, didn't they?
It's Rogue, not Rouge!

No, they were between 6 and 8 if I recall. Part of the selection process, after all, was a pseudo-interview with the candidate. Difficult to ask questions of an infant.

It is also possible that the children seen are John and another Spartan canidate early in their training; they began the process well before contact with the Covenant, and the scene could have well taken place during one of the "drop them in the forest and see how long it takes for them to get back" survival exercises.

Of course, it seems somewhat implied that the scene takes place on Earth, in which case neither boy could possibly be the Master Chief.

I realize that you're simply being flippant, Stark, but really, what's wrong with such an ad if they make it blindingly clear that the segment is in no way meant to be actual gameplay?

So ... when are they going to show any gameplay?

When they have some pretty game play to show. Most like three months before release they will start blitzing us with tibits, screenshots and a few videos.

Quiet you! Enjoy the pretty CGI and the nice music and be thankful the CGI is going to be semi related to the gameplay

I think that boy at the beginning is meant to be the Chief. Sure it's implied to be on Earth, but there's no reason it couldn't be.

Shield grenades look awesome. Running looks awesome. Cracked visor looks awesome. Dented armor looks incredible. Who cares if I'm not going to get that in gameplay? It looks cool!

How about 'because it's totally irrelevant'? Are you saying they could release a trailer containing hot, hot porn and you'd be excited, because porn is cool? There won't be any porn in the game... BUT WHO CARES IT LOOKS COOL.

What was that marketing adage about selling sizzle and not steak?

Personally, I believe it is the chief, and while the 'present day' part of the trailer takes place on earth, that doesn't mean the first part does.

The whole point of this trailer was to let people know that, yes, Halo 3 is still coming out, and yes, it's going to be cool. That's all it needs to do! Anything else is extra. This trailer is meant to hype up people about Halo 3, maybe ask some new questions, and I think it's done a great job of it.

Yeah, it's hyping Halo3 by having no Halo3 content at all. I repeat, I can't believe people still fall for this sort of thing in our cynical world of doctored screenshots and fake gameplay videos. :)

Even though it was reported that the ad would contain live-action footage along with CGI?

I recall Kotaku mentioning for a stretch of days before it came out.

Well, in an interview video with some of the designers released after the first trailer, they did in fact claim that this was what Halo 3 is going to look like. We'll just have to wait and see.

It doesn't need to have ingame content to advertise the product. Many adverts don't have functional demonstrations of the actual product, they only exist to grab attention for a few minutes and then plant the product name in the viewer's awareness.

Can't we all just bask in the warm Halo 3 goodness of the teaser trailer and be happy? I mean seriously, it's just a teaser, a year before the game is due out, what are you expecting? Bungie has already stated that the first teaser is indicative of the quality of the graphics for Halo 3 and that said teaser was done in real time. This one on the other hand is to wet the appetite and generate more buzz and random speculation (since they said the trailer would be chock full of hint-and-cluey goodness).

That all being said, it was awesome. One of the most satisfying bits for me was just hearing the click of the assualt rifle onto the Chief's back. I don't know why, it just was.
