You'd better pray Gordon Freeman never attacks your Fortress. Perhaps a series of floating platforms leading to the moat will deter him from even trying.

Yes, he thought that tank main armament rounds would bounce of the personal shields of ground troops! Damn but I miss him, like my own personal troll toy. Wind him up and watch him go.
Well, a grenade explosion has no effect, so its not too unreasonable to assume an artillery shell would.

Yes it is. A grenade explosion would consist of sharp, rather light fragments as opposed to a ten pound steel bullet travelling at high speeds, and anyway I do not recall any such event occuring in the books.

It takes place in Butlerian Jihad, when Holtzman is testing the shield. Ill quote it:
"...knowing he was inside the blast zone, Bel Moulay rushed back across the walkway. From the other side of the bridge, Norma watched the blinking sphere bounce off the shimmering barrier like a rotten fruit.
A loud blossom of fire erupted insde the open demonstration dome. The sound and the overpressure wave was enough to send Norma stumbling...
Two of the newly installed windows had blasted out in a cloud of of reinforced glass, scattering fragments that glittered as they caught sunlight. Smoke curled upward....
Like a victorious soldier, Holtzman swaggered out, blinking and waving smoke away from his face. He had switched off the shield generator and left the apparatus in the center of the room. Trudging through the wreckage, he appeared somewhat disheveled, but unharmed."

The grenade went off at point blank, and generated enough force to knock people over on the other side of the bridge. Holtzman was unharmed, even though the grenade went off at point blank.

This is odd. I assume said "shimmery sphere" was Holtzman's shield?

The explosive weight of your average 155mm artillery shell is around 20 pounds. A grenade has an ounce.

To be fair, it seems to have had a somewhat greater yield than your typical infantry grenade.

Still, the fact that it seemed hi-ex rather than frag should make the blast front a bit softer.

Damn, I'm tired...

X parasite from Metroid Fusion. They infect you, and then mimic your form and knowledge. That way, I can know where spies come from. Although metroids will have a field day with X parasites, that's where the gate guard, the SA-X parasite, will come in handy. The SA-X looks like Samus, with all of her special abilities, including Ice Beam, which renders metroids useless.

And you think that this blatent stupidity is a good thing? It has enough force to knock people over, yet doesn't knock over th person next to it?? What does the sheild add 400kgs to his weight or something. And while your thinking up a logically challenged answer to that, how about taking into account the slight difference in force between a grenade explosion and a Main tank round, An APFSDS projectile weighing 5.6kg travelling at 1800m/s delivers 9,072,000j to target.

And as to bullets, an 8gr, 7.62mm traveling at 880m/s delivers 3097j.
Your guy is not staying on his feet as these are both concentrated KE as opposed to the diffuse version found in a Grenade.

Lastly, "he had switched off the generator and left the apparatus in the centre of the room" was this a fixed in place test rig with him stood under it's projected dome, rather than the wearable versions that would be used in the field? Is there a description of this apparatus? Also he was disheveled, which is strange if none of the force got through, don't you think?

Dunno if this matters, but shields even slow the rate at which molecules move through it- as demonstrated when Leto tried to poison Vladimir.

Also, Vladimir gloats, Who would think of reviving artillerly in this day of shields? suggesting that some mechanism allows shields to deflect force and energy or something. It could be collective stupidity.

Incidentally, 'Jihad' was NOT written by Herbert. I believe it was authored by Brin.

Sorry it took me a while to respond. I will admit that an artillery shell will probably knock someone over, maybe even leave them unconscious. Diffuse force like the grenade however, appears to have no effect. I dont think the book describes the device in detail. The chapter is mostly people throwing stuff or shooting at the shield.

For the gate: Cthulhu.

This is assuming, of course, that I can control them. If not, then the whole world is screwed.

That's ok I'm not the speediest replier either. My problem was I thought you were defending the tank rounds and bullets thing. Grenades don't have much bang in them, even stun/Hi-ex ones are nothing compared to Arty shells. I'm surprised at the Glass being knocked out and the people getting knocked over though. That's a silly waste of explosive energy, as in the open it would do very little. That's why we use Frag Grenades, lots of shrapnel over a large expanding sphere.

Anyway, glad that's sorted.
