PC power supplies + gcard dieing

Post by Acidburns »

Hey, got a problem and was hoping for some suggestions.

For maybe the last 7 months, I've been having problems with my power supplies dieing. The last upgrades for my computer were the FX-55 processor, and the geforce 7800GTX. 3 months after this, my power supply died, it was the crappy one that came with the case, so no problems. The computer just switches off, refuses to restart.

Bought an Eye-T 500W supply, it dies 3 months later. Computer just switches off, refuses to restart.

When for a quality one, this time a Cooler Master 500W.

Computer just switches off (was playing Eve online at the time), much the same as what happened before. Suprisingly, the computer starts up this time, however I recieve no signal on the monitor, also I can hear a straining fan noise. So I swap out the Geforce 7800GTX for my old Gefore 6600GT. Computer starts normally as before with signal.

The 7800GTX is a BFG with lifetime warranty, so I'll be ok there.

Any ideas whats causing this? I didn't have a powersurge protected socket until I bought the coolermaster.

Specs:

Various Powersupply
Fx-55 Processor
Artic Cooling Freezer Pro
2Gig Corsair DDR
Asus A8N SLI Deluxe Mobo
Geforce 7800GTX (dead)
Soundblaster Live 5.1
EzCool Case

In the future, when looking to buy power supplies, I strongly recommend following the SH/SC Power Supply Guide (link).

Also, what exactly are you using for a surge protector? Rinky-dink power strips aren't likely to do you a whole lot of good.

An UPS would also be very good investment. If he's killed three PSUs in seven months, he probably has shitty power coming into his house. A decent UPS can condition the power, and hopefully keep him from blowing up PSUs ever other month.

Coolermaster doesn't make the PSU's sold under their brand name.
IIRC, AcBel makes most of the power supplies that Coolermaster sells.

If you want a quality unit and are willing to fork over a little cash, buy one of the new Corsair PSU's.
They have modular cables, a 5 year warranty, and are made for Corsair by Seasonic.
Seasonic PSU's are widely regarded as quality units.

One of the guys that designed the Corsair PSUs posted about them over on the SH/SC forums. They're really high-quality power supplies, but they're also very pricey.
