Growing up in a religious fundie church and after realizing that (through rational thought and logic) there is no God was pretty devestating to me. Parts of me wanted to hold on to the idea of a supernatural entity capable of all the "goodness" that I was brainwashed in believing.

Then I started re-reading the Bible, and all of the atrocities that God himself commited, and things that his "people" did in his name. It occured to me that even if there was a God (like this) I wouldn't want to serve Him. God truly is a maniac. Not only does God not care, but it seems that he actually hates his creation. What a cocksucker!

For me, (A) was more devestating. After realizing the reality of it all, (B) came as a result.

Barring profound stupidity, how many people really honestly believe that God cares, given his total lack of intervention to stop the horrors that takes place in the world? Particularly when juxtaposed with the ubiquity of miracles in both the Old and New Testaments?

Hell, many evangelicals believe that miracles happen all the time even today, yet it doesn't occur to them to ask why God only intervenes in this universe on behalf of some guy in Michigan who needs a better-paying job, and not on behalf of children being raped and murdered by raving militiamen in Africa.

It seems to me that even most believers don't really believe that God truly cares about what happens in this world unless they're idiots.

I think most believers I've talked to (even the moderates) think that God does care, but he doesn't do anything because of the magical Free Will argument, which seems to mean that God can do nothing but still care and still be good. Many also seem to think that God wants a personal relationship with everyone (believing isn't enough, he must really be your invisible best friend), and that this is what he really cares about. But when you point that that makes him rather evil, or at least have fucked up priorities, they will always use the Free Will card.

Of course, the Free Will argument is rather stupid, so I guess many of them actually are idiots...

Oh it occurs to them. They just chalk it up to that "God works in mysterious ways" bullshit.

I don't think it's possible without profound stupidity. When one realizes the simplistic logic, one also realizes how stupid one is to believe is such supernatural bullshit.
