I need help making a VCD

Post by bilateralrope »

I have a 710mb .avi on cd (xvid codec), but due to something being wrong with the CD when I try to copy the file off the CD I can only get 693mb copied before an error makes it impossible to copy the rest.

Now I've checked the file after copying it, and it does play with all video players I've tried, and I don't care about the bits cut off at the end. The problem is that when I try to make it into a VCD, nero complains that its an unsupported file type, but it doesn't complain about other ones with xvid.

So any suggestions on how I can make this into a VCD ?

You need to convert it to MPEG2 format to make a VCD, IIRC.

I just started making a VCD from another XVID I have, Nero seems to be able to convert them itself. I'm guessing that the problem is that Nero is looking for something in the last 13mb of the file that didn't copy. Since other software can play the file, I'm guessing that Nero is looking for something at the end of the file to conform the format, but the video players do without (note I have no idea how the xvid codec works).

So whats a good program I can use to fix the broken file ?

I managed to find divfix to fix the file so Nero can handle it. The problem is that its too long to fix it onto one CD. So I need to find a video editor to split the video in half, so I can stick in two cds.

Download VirtualDub. It is freeware. You can split the XviD file into two parts. By the way, VCD is garbage. Convert to SVCD. It is superior to VCD.

If you decide to use VirtualDub, make sure you set the video and audio settings to "Direct Stream Copy". If you keep the video and audio settings set to "Full Process Mode", the new avi files will be fucking massive.

On a semi-related rant, why does it have to be damnsome close to (albeit not quite) impossible to convert Matroska-container files to something you can burn on a DVD?

A trial version of Nero used to be able to do that, now that I have a much bigger HDD I'm not sure anymore as I don't use it as often.

mencoder will convert most anything to mpeg (and other formats) I think. Quite annoying to look up all the flags though, although I'm sure there's a GUI frontend somewhere...

VirtualDub refused to touch the avis, because it couldn't find a suitable codec (it stated that the one media player uses isn't enough). But I was able to find another program that was able to split the avi into usable parts.

When I compared the file structure of the VCD to an actual DVD in windows explorer, they were nowhere near the same.

When I tried to make an SVCD however, I was told that the avi I used for making the SVCD wasn't compatible with making into an SVCD, and that I need to get a plugin to do the conversion. But I can't easily find this plugin on the nero site so could someone either direct me to this plugin, or suggest a different program for making a SVCD ?

I'm currently using Nero Express 6, version 6.3.0.2

Thanks for that site. Unfortunately it seems that the reason why the VCD won't play is because my DVD player doesn't support VCD. Since it doesn't support SVCD either, there is nothing more that I can do here.

Thanks for the help
