Sorry man i couldnt find the thread, right now, when i have some more time i'll look deeper. I cant even recall what board it was on here.

It was Alyeska who said that about the operation though, we were discussing groups who need to hurry up and die, Singular Quartet said "People who refuse implants to help their children who are deaf, because they themselves are deaf" and Alyeska was saying that these people, who actually deafen their kids, were worse.

Sorry, so, i'll concede that point untill i can find it and back that up.
Is this the thread you were looking for, 18? People who you wish would just hurry up and die

I was searching the internet for an article, and while I couldn't find any examples of deaf couples using surgery to deafen their children, I found this:
New York Times Article 12/5/06 wrote:But a desire for children with genetic defects isn’t new. In 2002, for example, The Washington Post Magazine profiled Candace A. McCullough and Sharon M. Duchesneau, a lesbian and deaf couple from Maryland who both attended Gallaudet University and set out to have a deaf child by intentionally soliciting a deaf sperm donor.

“A hearing baby would be a blessing,” Ms. Duchesneau was quoted as saying. “A deaf baby would be a special blessing.”

Born five years ago on Thanksgiving Day, the couple’s son, Gauvin, was mostly deaf, and his parents chose to withhold any hearing aids.
The full article is here. Registration is required, but it's free.

Actually it was originally Alyeska who mentioned it on the first page of this thread (didn't give a source for it though).

That's rather sick to make your kid deaf. That's intentionally creating a harder life for your child than need be. It's not "fun" or "cool" to be deaf. It's limiting the quality of their life.

Why the fuck would someone want to do that?

Some people with disabilities are part of a rather strong culture. Deaf culture, for instance, is quite prevalent; I mean, the deaf even have their own language, in a sense. I've heard, via my fiancee, about parents who wanted to make their children deaf just because they identified so strongly with their culture.

To me, it is nothing more than mutilation, a hideous form of child abuse that should be outlawed, with its practitioners jailed. To deliberately disable a child is seriously amoral and should be thoroughly illegal and subject to the stiffest penalties.

Wouldn't that be 'immoral'?

I think I did read something about this in some of my disability textbooks, but I never had any cases of parents deliberately wanting to debilitate their infants.

I did recognize that, now that you mention it, the deaf community is often very tight and has a tendancy to be a closed-circle due to their unique cultural characteristics.

I agree though, it's child abuse. Even if you have a culture, I don't believe it's moral to debilitate people and cause them to have a lowered quality of life just to maintain some aesthetic or cultural practice. Taken as an aggregate, children with deafness tend to, by the age of 13, have serious reading difficulties in school--up to about 2-3 years behind the reading level of other children. To do that to someone is horrible.

This "culture" crap sickens me. You know who else had a culture? Slaves. Here's an idea, you gaping assholes. Why don't you go around asking how many black people want to be enslaved once more, to experience the culture of their great ancestors?

Just because a certain subset of obviously disadvantaged people have a culture, doesn't make their misfortunes all right.

Was something I saw on a documentary on Deaf people and have read from Wikipedia.
"If the facts are on your side, pound on the facts. If the law is on your side, pound on the law. If neither is on your side, pound on the table."

"The captain claimed our people violated a 4,000 year old treaty forbidding us to develop hyperspace technology. Extermination of our planet was the consequence. The subject did not survive interrogation."
