Ravenloft Questions

Post by xammer99 »

Since folks were so incredibly helpful in some of my other DMing woes, I was hopin for some help with this one.

I have the DM's guide for Ravenloft, and the maps are nice and teasing, over all I really like the book I must say, but I do have a few questions.

1. Does anyone have a scale on the map in the DM guide?
2. Does any of the other books go into any nice detailed descriptions of the realms of Ravenloft?

Every time i do a google search I get the damn phone book for results, so hopefully some of you have an idea and can help.

Thanks!

Since Ravenloft is a weird pocket dimension that keeps adding new realms and changing all the time, trying to come up with a reliable, consistent scale wouldn't be too useful except as the DM needs. Second, if you want more information, the Gazeteers are a good place to start. Check here for an example of Ravenloft stuff.

If you can find old 2nd ed stuff, you can find some lovely stuff on realms that may or may not still exist. Vecna Reborn is a very appropriate way to set the tone, and The Nightmare Lands are an excellent place to send players for a 'Week In Hell'.

I don't know much about any new books expanding on areas, but the nature of Ravenloft allows you to whip up, well, anything that's scary. Watch some old horror films and you might get an idea.

A good place to start would be at White Wolf. They had the right to print Ravenloft for 3.0 & 3.5 until halfway of 2006.

The next step would be hunting down the Van Richten's guides to <insert monster type here> and the Van Richten's Monster Hunter's Compendiums. They might not contain usable specific information (due to them being for AD&D 2nd) but a wealth of background details to flesh out the world.
There are also 2nd edition books to some of the realms.

Oh and you might want to tweak the mists a bit if you want to keep the players unaware for a while where they actually are.

I have quite a bit of the old Ravenloft stuff, including all but one of the van Richten's Guides and quite a few modules in addition to the first two boxed sets. The things have a lot of background stuff and the maps even had scale to them.

The Ravenloft domains are fairly small and if you took the stuff that was in the original boxed set, you dould drop it into the Shining Sea in the Forgotten Realms and watch it sink beneath the waves. Even the biggest Ravenloft realms such as Darkon were pretty small.
