I am officially unimpressed with PS3.

As a completely anecdotal piece of evidence, I went to Best Buy tonight to get a Wii and found that while they were out of Wii's they had multiple PS3's sitting on the shelves.
Hmmmmm, interesting

Huh, that happened as well last year where when was in a Target store; there were piles of PSP's, and no DS'(The first gen, not the lite). What a coincidence.KrauserKrauser wrote:As a completely anecdotal piece of evidence, I went to Best Buy tonight to get a Wii and found that while they were out of Wii's they had multiple PS3's sitting on the shelves.

No, at one Best Buy, a group of people took advantage of a line in front of a store in the early AM hours and decided to rob them. When one person refused to turn over his wallet, they shot him.General Schatten wrote:Werent people killing for PS3's a couple weeks back? My little brother got a new console this past year, but it wasn't a PS3, 360, or Wii. It was the regular Xbox. The system itself didn't cost much, the graphics still hold up just fine, and there are years worth of cheap high-quality games available that he's never played before.Darth Wong wrote:I think it's amusing that we go to EB Games and they have display units set up for both old and new generation consoles. With no prompting at all, my kids tend to gravitate to the older consoles, simply because the games running on them look more interesting. I actually tried to point out to them "Hey, look at how sharp the picture is on that one" and they just shrugged. There may be an improvement in graphics but it's not so big as to make people automatically prefer the new system.

*Shrug* Its a rant, some of his points are valid. But its mostly to let off steam about the game industry. A great many things about the industry are very annoying. The 'cutscene used to sell the game because the gameplay graphics suck' is solving itself. But the new MGS shouldn't even exist.Spanky The Dolphin wrote:Empty mewling bullshit. Hideo has other projects he wants to do, as far as he was concerned MSG3 was the end. But, due to the terms of his contract he has to do anouther MG if they tell him to. If he quits he can't work for several years so he's stuck with club raised ready to beat MGS into the next Castlevania.

FEAR AI was designed to appear smarter than it actualy is. As a character in Toy Soldiers would say it's still artificial intelligence rather than actual intelligence. Replicas pretend to work in squads, flank their enemeis and use other advanced tactics. But in reality they are doing none of that. Replica AI is actualy nothing more than shoot, take cover, emerge from cover else where and repeat.Stark wrote:That's where most of FEAR's 'difficulty' came from. The enemy was accurate with powerful weapons: they didn't have to be very smart to be a threat. If you didn't have slow-mo the game would've been much harder but not because of the AI.
Then again, some people think making the badguys yell what they're about to do at the tops of their voices represents 'AI'. Like the FEAR psychically-controlled soldiers run by Fettel to know all... who use radios.
The case of flanking the playerfor example has been praised as a pinnacle of AI behavior in many reviews of FEAR. But as developers later explained what actualy happens is the Replicas take cover and when they come out of cover the next best place to shoot from just happens to be behind the player. There is no actual planning to flank the player. The developers themselves said their goal was to create an illusion of an intelligent enemy instead of an actual intelligent enemy,
Long document on design of FEAR AI
That said FEAR AI is still far better than most game AI. FPS enemy AI has come a long way.
I have to tell you something everything I wrote above is a lie.

As anecdotes go, i went looking for a DS on the 23rd, then on the 26th and on the 28th, to Target, Walmart, Bestbuy, EB, Babbage's, 2 different Gamespots and a little local store, i couldn't find a DS, not even a used one, but i asked for the other consoles out of curiosity. There were a total of 19 PS3's available for buying during those visits, including 2 on Target on the 23'd.
I saw Oblivion on an Xbox360 hooked up to a VGA tv thingie and it looked really incredible, and we also played burnout or something and that was really nice too. I have a Wii back here due to Christmas, and I'm not sure how I feel about either. It really comes down to gameplay though, and the Wii has a really fun style of gameplay and I'm hoping for creative, clever, interesting games to come out for it. The 360 has great graphics and several fun games, but to me it's six of one, half dozen of another. I happily play older games, or current games at low rez, so while Oblivion's graphics are jaw-droppingly awesome at times, it's really the game itself that makes it fun.
The PS3 is indeed a meh right now though. Not fully optimized, fairly thin selection, and neither the most powerful graphics nor most interesting control scheme. If they all cost the same, getting a PS3 might be an okay compromise between innovation and power, but since it costs more than the 360 or Wii right now it's just not worth it.

There's what... 5 games right now out for the PS3? Dejavu Football 2007, Truck Racing Something Something, Dynasty Warriors Sorta, Giant Enemy Crab, and that one decent FPS Game made by the Ratchet and Clank guys about WW2 with aliens.Covenant wrote:I saw Oblivion on an Xbox360 hooked up to a VGA tv thingie and it looked really incredible, and we also played burnout or something and that was really nice too. Color me unimpressed by that alone, damn the $600 price.
As I mentioned in another thread, I saw 11 games for sale for the PS3 in a store over here, so theirs definately more than five. Can't say how they play yet because there aren't any playable machies in the stores yet.Nephtys wrote:There's what... 5 games right now out for the PS3? There are more...too bad the reason people say five is because that was the initial launch over here, and the rest have been 90% rehashes of games on other systems. A friend of mine imported one from the US, and I can tell you he's been a lot less impressed since he found out that while I've got my 360 outputting in all its HD glory to a £130 monitor from the local PC shop, he has to pay £250 for an HDCP compliant monitor thanks to Sony's decision to make the HDMI port incapable of working with any display that doesn't support the latest DRM buttfuckery!

Arstechnica is also underimpressed with the PS3's ability to deliver quality games in the near future, too.Ghost Rider wrote:There are more...too bad the reason people say five is because that was the initial launch over here, and the rest have been 90% rehashes of games on other systems. ArsTechnica wrote:It looks like it's going to be a long and lonely January for Sony's new console. I was hanging out on EBGames' site trying to make my purchasing plans for the next month or so and wow... the next release for the system is Sonic the Hedgehog on January 30. The only thing that's worth saying about that game is a friendly tip to avoid it. Really. You'll be happier that way.
F.E.A.R. is coming out on February 13, but are there gamers out there who missed it on the PC and the 360? I mean, there must be some, but is this the game that is supposed to get me excited about the PS3? The end of the month has some good stuff though—I'm excited about Virtua Fighter 5 and I've expressed my joy about the demo of Motorstorm before—but do I really have to wait almost two months to get a good game on the PS3? On the first of March we'll see Lair, and that looks pretty good.
There are a few games to look forward to, but man, if you bought early and don't have any other systems, you're in for something of a drought.
I guess we can hope there are some good titles released via the Playstation Store, but that's a thin hope. I knew that the first month or so of the PS3 would be a touch dry, but this is bad. Even worse is that I can look at a list like Next-Gen's and get excited about a ton of the games. I just want them sooner!
The downside of buying any console early is that it seems like no company can avoid those first few months of getting depressed while you look at release dates. If I were a developer, I guess I'd be holding my games back too—it would be worth waiting until Sony sells a million or so units in each region. Still though. Sony, can't you just write a few checks or something?

And when the 360 released half the games available were ports from the xbox and PC, the majority of which played and/or looked better on the original console. In that respect its not exactly different, and judging by that Arstech article, most developers look like their waiting until the PS3's actually been released over here as well.Ghost Rider wrote:There are more...too bad the reason people say five is because that was the initial launch over here, and the rest have been 90% rehashes of games on other systems. You can with someone else, if you want...my point was something you haven't refuted about the PS3. It came out HERE with crap, and their best was a okay FPS by most standards.
It supports Nephtys thought of for $600, not very impressive when it's competitors may have similar, but for less.

Fair enough, I agree its definately got its problems. This may come as a surprise to you, but there are no DS systems in stores NOW.Loner wrote:Huh, that happened as well last year where when was in a Target store; there were piles of PSP's, and no DS'(The first gen, not the lite). Apparently, a shitload of parents went to try and buy Wii or PS3, but when there weren't any of those available they decided to settle for a DS or a DS lite for their kids.
There are two GameStop stores in this town, and neither of them has a single bloody DS system for sale until the end of January.
Ceci n'est pas une signature.
At least in my area the problem was not PS3 availability, i could have walked in and picked up a PS3 from a number of stores any day around the holidays, including the 23d at 7pm, no DS, though, and that's what i was specifically looking for. DS is just more wanted, not second choice.Molyneux wrote:This may come as a surprise to you, but there are no DS systems in stores NOW.Loner wrote:Huh, that happened as well last year where when was in a Target store; there were piles of PSP's, and no DS'(The first gen, not the lite).
