Go play Wing Commander 2 again, then. It's a wonderful game and the graphics don't hurt it at all...

Does it even run on a modern OS?

I sincerely doubt it. They did however make a Win 95 compatible version of WC1,2 and 3 so I assume that would still work. Don't know where one would find it though.

It depends on which 'modern OS' you're running... If you have access to a FAT 32 or FAT 16 partition you can definately get it running with a bootdisk. Wing Commander 2 will also run for most people, with a degree of fiddling, in a DOS window in the 9x and ME series of OSes. If you want to fiddle about with it to make it work and need some help, just ask over at the Wing Commander CIC Chat Zone and they'll help set you up.[/url]

And if you were lucky enough to subscribe to PC Gamer a few years ago, they gave away the full version of WC free. (Ha! Take that graphic whores!)

Also, EA presumably has Windows versions of Armada and Privateer in the wings that lay unreleased due to lack of interest.

Privateer was excellent.

Armada sucked serious ass. Ye gods what an incredibly sucky game.

While some things are not readily quantifiable, for instance the importance of tactics on a battlefield, in almost all sci-fi "vs." debates, the discrepencies in firepower are large enough so as to destroy any doubt instituted by these "other" factors. In this particular case: that of space marines vs. clones, calculations are relatively easy to perform, based on the calculations Mike performed for stormtrooper resistance to weapons fire.

I don't think there was ever a Windows Privateer *officially created*, we've just been told that it would be hard to do... And the Windows Armada wasn't released for a number of reasons...

Only WC:Prophecy works on windows. I bought a copy of WC4 and I never could get it to work on a Windows 98 machine.

Wing Commander 4 runs quite well in Windows 98. The DOS version can take a little fiddling if you don't have the Windows 95 patch installed... With the Windows 95 patch installed, you won't have any problems at all...

Bleh, I stupidly forgot to mention that it's more than possible to run all the Wing Commander games except for Armada and Privateer inside Windows 9x... I have it setup that way on this machine right here running Windows 98. That can, in some cases, take a little more effort that it's worth, but if you don't want to do that it's a simple DOS reboot away.

But we're screwed if we're running Win2k on an NTFS partition, aren't we?

I played WC3 and WC4 and Privateer when they were new. Loved 'em all, but I don't think they'll run under a proper OS.

Windows 2000 will only run the Kilrathi Saga version of Wing Commander 2 (none of the other games in KS) and Prophecy, if you install the Windows 2000 updated Prophecy executable that you can get at the CIC's file section.

There are a couple of CD versions of the earlier games that'll run off of the CD that would work with a bootdisk, but you won't be able to change the sound setup and other options... so that's pretty much useless...

How do I get WCIIDeluxe to run in WinME? I'm trying desperately and the search terms won't go under four letters

Silly Bob... drop by #wingnut tommorow and talk to me about it. It's not really that hard, but this isn't really the right place to talk about it.

There are certain properties you can change to get the appliction to run under different OS parameters. I'll see if I can find the old fix.

Ok I found it
Right click on the .exe and go the the compatability tab NT4 SP5 is the setting if you want it to work on 98 there are others for different OS compatabilities. Depending on the NT that was out that year.
