Given how I had a discussion with my YEC father and an out-right fight with my insane brother* over Creationism a week or two ago, ID and the such SHOULD be brought up in class only to explain in layman's terms why its so wrong.
*My brother couldn't even keep his story straight. His primary argument (and I use the word extremely loosely) was evolution leads to Nazism; but he kept changing his claim back and forth between "Hitler was an atheist" and "Hitler was a pagan".

The problem is that kids start learning science at a grade where they don't bother hiring specialized science-educated teachers to teach science. The basics of science, ie- the scientific method, are taught by so-called "general education" teachers in the primary grades. And really, by the time kids reach high school, it's pretty hard to correct a decade of misconceptions and church indoctrination. And that's leaving aside the questionable abilities of many high-school science teachers; it's not as if school boards are flooded with highly qualified science teachers. They have to make do with the talent pool they have.

I would say that "ID" is not part of my university education and teachers course so I'm unable to do that. If headmaster (or whoever) insists I would say I'm totally unqualified to teach "ID" since I got an 'A' in evolution but I can provide them few names of people who failed and would fit fine to teach "ID". Then I would go to my desk, got my stuff and search for new job.
English is my second language - please help me by pointing out my errors (preferably politely) so I can continue to improve.

Which in the case of biology usually means "a bunch of people who couldn't get into medical school."Darth Wong wrote:And that's leaving aside the questionable abilities of many high-school science teachers; it's not as if school boards are flooded with highly qualified science teachers. I'm not sure that's an accurate description of what DW is saying, since those who tried and couldn't get into medical school are, likely as not, rather smart.Darth Servo wrote:Which in the case of biology usually means "a bunch of people who couldn't get into medical school."Darth Wong wrote:And that's leaving aside the questionable abilities of many high-school science teachers; it's not as if school boards are flooded with highly qualified science teachers.
