The only reason I can think of for running Ultimate is that it (among the consumer versions) alone allows the OS to be run in a VM (with some restrictions, IIRC you can't play any "premium content"). $399 seems to me to be a high price to pay for virtualization when any version of XP grants you the same freedom, and for the time being, the vast library of Windows software that keeps most Windows users on that platform is more likely to run in XP properly than Vista.

I bought XP Pro back in September (it was on sale), and well, XP is proven. Vista isn't.
