I have a sci-fi universe that I've pretty much kept in my head for the past six years or so. Based on several short stories I did in freshman year HS.

It really doesn't have a name, but it's a galactic government set in 3045. The government is called the Galactic Republic, but the entire thing is called the Starlace Fire Universe, after a cargo ship from my stories.

It's a bit more advanced than Star Trek.

I found it. Here it is:

The Fomorian Universe FAQ

What or who are the Fomorians?

The Fomorians are a powerful alien species who have traveled space for millenia. They are seven feet tall (on average) and have red glowing eyes and powerful batlike wings. In fact, they resemble classic demons.

Fomorians are sexual creatures with a mating season, but they can and do have sex outside of that time, however, mating season is the only time females are fertile.

Fomorians are superior physically to humans; an average Fomorian has 20 times the physical capabilities of an average human.

They are more intelligent and perceptive than human beings.

Fomorians are powerful psionic beings. They have easily mastered telepathy, empathy, and telekinesis, among others. Also, they possess a natural ability to teleport through dimensional shift.

Fomorians speak their own tongue and have the psionic capability to understand and speak alien languages as well.

While the Fomorians may appear terrifying, they are actually peaceful and gentle and not warlike, but they will defend themselves.

How many sentient species are in the Fomorian universe?

Fomorians and Terrans (humans) are the only own known two. There were others, but they are extinct.

Do the Fomorians possess an empire, and if so, what is its scope?

The Fomorian Empire has 20 million star systems under its control. Compare this to the Terran Empire, which only has 3 million systems.

What are the capabilities of the Fomorian fleet, and what is the fleet size?

The Fomorian fleet numbers into the millions. As for capabilities, be more specific.

What weapons do the Fomorians use?

They use psionic weapons. Such as telepathic mind blast and telekinetic energy beams.

Do they employ fighters?

No. But the Terrans do.

Do the Fomorians employ turrets or arrays like other universes?

They have no need for these, as their ships can fire from any point on their hull that they desire.

What about shields?

They have no need for defensive shielding as their armor can deflect 90% of enemy fire, plus it regenerates. If necessary, the Fomorians can generate TK defense fields around their vessels ( and planets.) They do have navigational shielding, however. The Terran ships possess shields for defense.

What are the drives and power sources used in the FU?

Terrans use quamtum singularities and ion drives, while Fomorians employ gravitic drives and psionic energy.

What are the Terran weapons?

Antimatter warheads and energy cannons They also use smart missiles.

What are the smart missiles capabilities?

The Terran smart missiles, will track any target it is launched at; the only kick is: they never run out of fuel!

These missiles will pursue a target until they are destroyed or hit their target. They also have shields, ECM, and small energy cannons to protect them from fighters and missiles trying to intercept them. They're have been accounts of these missiles dogfighting enemy fighters in the past that have attacked them! Also, they will dodge enemy fire and fire on their target to weaken it before impact. They also have advanced decision-making capability, including the ability to think. These smart missiles are truly smart. Their top speed is .99c.

Why do they never run out of fuel?

The missiles utilize a miniature quantum singualarity for power (surprise, right?)

How big is the Terran fleet?

In the millions. But smaller than the Fomorian fleet.

Are the Terrans and Fomorians friendly to each other?

No. They are in a Cold War after having fought several destructive wars (which the Fomorians all won.)

What are their governments?

The Terran empire is a dictatorship, while the Fomorian Empire is ruled by a council of elders.

Do they have planet busting weapons?

The Terrans use planet busting energy cannons on their standard warships, while the Fomorians use their telekinetic abilities to destroy worlds, however, this requires a number of them and intense concentration, plus they are loath to do so, unlike the Terrans.

What are the abilities of their average warships and their sizes and classes?

Terrans employ two types of capships, a battleship and carrier.

The Dragon battleship is armed with with four turrets on top, two in fron of the bridge and two behind. They have smaller turrets on the sides and bottom, 40 on the sides each, and 40 on the bottom. Missile tubes are located in a circle around the planet busting cannon. They have 8 tubes and can launch 5 missiles a second. The missiles used are AM smart missiles.

Dragons carry 24 fighters.

Dragons are 5000 meters long.

Scorpion carriers are 100,000 meters long, and possess the smaller turrets of the Dragon for defense . They possess 400 of these turrets.

They carry 800 fighters, and 300 troop transports.

Fomorian warships are 1000 meters, and don't need turrets.

What are the Terran fighters like?

The Crusher fighter is armed with with two energy cannons and 24 AM smart missiles. It is 17 meters long and like all Terran vessels, has shields and FTL.

What FTL is employed?

The Terrans employ hyperdrive, while the Fomorian vessels simply teleport to their destinations.

Fomorian teleportation is instantaneous, no matter the distance. They can even jump to other galaxies in this way!

Terran hyperspace max speed is a million c.

How abou sublight speed?

Terran commercial/civilian ship speed: . 75c

Terran warship speed (including fighters and transports) .97c

Fomorian ship speed: .99c

Do they employ ground armies?

Of course. The Terrans use energy rifles and pistols, body armor, artillery, and hovertanks, plus gunships.

Fomorians use powerful battlesuits.

What do their ships look like?

Terran vessels look a little like wet navy ships flying in space, while Fomorian craft look like flying saucers.

What are their weapon ranges?

Terran standard cannon ranges are 8000 light years; smaller cannons are 4000, while missiles have a range 0f 10,000 lys. The big gun has a range of 9000 lys. Fighter guns have a range of 1000lys, while fighter missiles have a range of 1500 lightyears.

Fomorian weapon ranges are practically unlimited.

Do either employ matter/energy transporters?

Terrans do, but Fomorians have no need of such devices.

Can Terrans beam through shielding?

Yes.

How about beaming on Fomorian vessels?

Fomorian ships' armor and hull are too dense to be beamed through, plus they use an interdictor field to prevent this.

Does the Terran Empire have rebels?

Yes.

How about tractor beams?

Terrans have them. Fomorians don't need them.

The Terrans have any special abilities or powers?

Some possess the ability to turn into a monstrous berserker form, which is extremely difficult to kill and possesses superhuman physical abilities 10 times that of an average human.

What other defenses do FU ships possess?

Terran ships have heavy armor and ECM, in addition to shields.

Are Fomorian vessels susceptible to electromagnetic disturbance?

No. But the Terran craft can be.

Do the Terrans use EM missiles to disable craft?

Yes, but Fomorians are unaffected.

What happened to the other races?

The Terrans killed them all. Nasty, aren't they?

Ground weapon ranges?

Terran pistol: 1 km. Terran rifle: 5 km. Tank cannon: 30 km. Tank AI guns 5 km. AA missile artillery: 300 km. Ground artillery: 1000 km. Gunship cannon: 70 kms. Gunships missiles: 100 km.

Fomorian gw ranges are effectively unlimited.

What are the capabilities of Fomorian battlesuits?

They can fly at .99c (but not in an atmosphere) and are equipped with TK energy beams. All enviroment suits, which can operate in water at any depth, along with any other hostile enviroment with ease. The battlesuits are made of a lighter version of the substance used to make Fomorian ship armor. It also boosts their physical abilities by 500 times.

Any cloaking tech?

Yes. The Terrans use cloak on their ships, from fighters to transports to capships. It's useless against Fomorians, though. They scan for minds, as well as ships.

Can Terrans fire while cloaked?

Yes.

Do Terrans have shields while cloaked?

No.

Sensor ranges?

Terrans can scan for 200,000 lys in all directions. Fomorian sensors have unlimited range in all directions.

Are troop transports armed?

Yes. They have several turrets, plus armor, ECM, shields, and cloak. Troop transports are 100 meters long.

Any planetary defenses?

Terrans employ ground missile batteries, fighter garrisons, and killer missile satellites to defend worlds. They also use planetary shields, and if necessary, planetary cloak.

Fomorian populations are the planentary defense. They can attack ships with telepathy and telekinesis, which, if necessary, can easily destroy enemy fleets.

Are commercial/civilian ships armed?

Only with a few turrets. They do have shields, armor, and cloak (and hyperdrive.)

Fomorians have no need of a merchant fleet. They set up portable dimensional teleporter gates, which link to a interstellar network connecting all their worlds, and use these for commerce. Civilian battlesuits are generally used for heavy loads.

How hard are FU sensors to jam?

Terran sensors are difficult to jam because they are hardened and have backups for sensors (as well as other vital systems.) Fomorian sensors (along with other systems) are impossible to jam with standard electronic equipment or weapons because they're psionic in nature.

Can FU ships go into the atmosphere of planets?

If necessary. Fomorian ships can go underwater as well.

Are FU ships affected by high gravity or radiation, like neutron stars or black holes?

Terran ships are nearly immune to radiation, and can approach within 1000 kms of black holes and neutron stars without danger.

Fomorians ships are unaffected by even the most severe radiation or gravity, plus they are unharmed by even the hottest tempartures. In fact, Fomorian vessels can go in and out of stars and black holes whenever they please! Sometimes, this ability was used to ambush hapless Terrans!

What are communication speeds and ranges?

Terrans: Speed: instantaneous Range: unlimited Fomorians: Speed: instantaneous Range: unlimited.

Who are the rebels?

The rebels are angry Terran citizens who formed after the first Terran defeat at the hands of the Fomorians.

The rebels do not have as large an industrial base as the TE, so they generally do not use missiles, or employ large capships. Their fleet consists of scouts and gunships.

Rebel Key scout: Armament: 4 energy cannons. EMP beam for disabling ships. Has shields, ECM, armor, and hyperdrive. sublight speed .99c hyperdrive speed: million c Length: 10 meters.

Rebel Claw gunship: Armament: 4 (capship size)energy cannons. EMP beam. Shields, ECM, armor, and hyperdrive. Length: 100 meters sublight speed .99c hyperdrive speed: million c.

Where are the rebel bases?

In uninhabited and unclaimed systems outside the TE.

Can rebels cloak?

Yes. Their ships are also designed to minimize their electromagnetic signature even more, thus making them even harder to detect.

Other rebel ship capabilities?

They are also nearly immune to radiation and can also approach within 1000 kms of high gravity phenomena.

If TE and rebel vessels are nearly immune to radiation, then why is EMP used?

TE and rebel EMP have been modified to get around this ability.

Do the the rebel vessels have transporters and tractor beams, and the ability to beam through shields?

Yes to all of the above.

What do rebel ships look like?

Like flying grappling hooks only without the hook part.

Will the TE develop new warships anytime soon?

There is a monstrous ship already under development.

If the Terran ships are resistant to gravity, and Fomorian vessels are immune to it, what good are tractor beams?

The Terran starship's gravity resistance is due to a generator that produces a gravity resistant field. This field is useless against larger spacecraft's tractors. It can also be disabled to allow a smaller or similar sized craft to use tractors on a equivalent vessel. Fomorians are unaffected by tractor beams.

Why are Fomorian vessels immune to gravity effects?

It has something to do with these ship's psionic nature.

What are the tractor beams' range?

Standard TB range: 3 lys.

Are all Terran ships equipped with tractor beams?

Yes, including the rebels.

You said the Terrans use energy cannons, exactly what kind of energy do they use?

Hyperspace energy, which they get from a hyperspace tap built into turrets and other cannons.

Can the Terrans track ships in hyperspace?

Yes, these sensors have the same range and radius as their realspace ones. Fomorians also have this ability.

How do Fomorians control their vessels?

With the power of thought.

Do FU races use spacestations or starbases?

No. They see no need for them.

What possible format could your local Webcomic Junkie be using besides a Webcomic?

I'm surprised how many people made super-powered godlike universes. Mine is, I suspect, the weakest here. It's fantasy which follows the laws of physics, so to speak.

The story itself covers a vast amount of time as the Earth itself is alive and is actually the child of the planet which is now an Asteroid field. There are some fairly mean things floating around in the darkness but the main characters are a giant spider, a purple zombie, and a floating slime who, between them, might be able to handle a platoon of the US military but certainly won't be blowing up planets any time soon. They are, in fact, some of the weakest beings in that universe and the story itself revolves around their constant efforts to try to deal with more powerful things and to keep from getting crushed in the crossfire when those things start fighting. They are limited to earth itself and most of the stories occur in the environs of the city Happy Hills, center for the arcane for an entire continent. Main settings are the Scimitar, a popular bar with Troll and Stone Golem bouncers, the rooftops where many a battle takes place, the streets of a slum called the Rat's Nest where the alleyways are too narrow for cars and too twisted for gunfire but just right for a knife fight, and the cave system the main characters live in.

On the other hand my sorcerers are fairly uber, I realize now that in one strip I commented that the Average mage has to be very careful in drawing energy as simply grabbing as much as you can results in a crater the size of Montana and apparently dragons are stronger than any mage. But my main characters are very weak compared to the other ones I've seen in this thread.

I made mine just stronger than Star Trek (like about 2-3x), but not enough so that they'd be a threat to Star Wars. I wanted mine to have limits.

Uber-powerful SF universes do not interest me, as I find just listening to someone talk about them to be insanely boring. That's why I don't give a shit about the Culture: being infinitely powerful can't hold my interest.

Besides, having an uber-powerful SF universe just sounds like wanking to me: so I end up thinking they should just post a picture of themselves masturbating if they're going ramble about it. It's pathetic.

I'm sure. Which is funny because humans are already experimenting with things that could inadvertantly destroy the planet instantly and eventually the solar system in a few years. ::shrug::

I have one that's been in my head for a while now, basically, set in the 2200's, Earth has only just colonised the solar system, there are a few main powers vying for control of resources.

The twist is that, in a fantasy turn, there are people in the human race who are basically faster smarter stronger etc. People like this are few and far between and most work for the governments as operatives.

In the few short stories I have written basically the powers each move closer towards war.

Better than it sounds.

Then try to read the books. You'll see that the Culture is far from being the most powerful civilization in its universe : it just seem invicible and god-like to other universes. And the sheer power of the Culture is only a small part of the books : good stories, good characters, humour, en bref very entertaining and enjoyable.

I didn't think Starbucks had got quite so far, but why stop there? Why not have universe crunching superweapons? Sometimes, I wonder if the device from the Hitch-hiker's guide to the galaxy designed to show the Universe in true human perspective (forget the name) should be constructed so that people can get an idea of how large solar systems and galaxies actually are.

I hae been toying with the idea of a novel for something I thought up a long time ago.

Basically Earth has around 5or six interstellar countries on it. The Earth Nations are one of the most advance, and earliest space faring civilazations with each controlling around 30 star systems each. Space combat relies heavily on missles and projectiles, although some lasers are used. Propulsion works on little miniture "jumps" ahead with conventional propolsion doing the rest. The science for it doesn't exist (except if you use quantum mechanics on a huge scale :P ) so don't bother asking.

Haven't got the rest finished yet besides a couple alien races.

The one that I'm developing is... a bit weird, I guess. It has tech, psi, and magic thrown in, as well as the usual array of bad guys, some of which were leftovers from the previous 'Big Crunch', which they initiated.

Humanity exists in the thousands of planets, but here's the catch. They're(or we're) just an experiment carried out years ago by an obscenely advanced civilization, the first ones, that decided to carry out an experiment in determinism and free will. They created(or modified) hundreds of almost identical galaxies, with almost identical solar system in one spiral arm, and almost identical Earths existing in the hundreds, each with preset patterns and off kilter(that is, when conditions become such that calculations are thrown off) sequences. Remember, the universe was a much smaller place several billion of years ago. :P

A good number of the powers decided that they deserved to rule over everybody else, influenced by the wicked remnents of a previous universe. Then there was a huge war, the experiment was ruined, and the remainign first ones decided to head for what they perceived as heaven after banishing the bad guys to a tesseract, which was made to be as uncomfortable as possible, with fiery lava lakes, hot weather etc. Sound familiar?

Other alien races(2nd gen) came after the first race, and they took what they could of the first race's technology(plus psi and magic) and adapted it for their own ends. They went for their own goals. Some strived to create the perfect species(remember SC?). Others sought to expand their knowledge(Remember Haydon?). Yet others isolated themselves, not giving a damn about the rest of the universe.

Meanwhile, the bad guys haven't been idle either. They managed to create gates out of their tesseract prison, and started going after the 2nd gen races. A huge war ensued, and while the 2nd gen races survived, their power was largely broken. The bad guys start building up their forces again, seeking to claim the universe completely. Talk about grandiose nightmares.

All the time this was going on, the earths were left to their own devices...

Some earths develop space flight and limited FTL. ST, BT, Starfire, the Tower.

Some don't, and stay stuck in the medieval age. Erde, Titan.

Some became known as other worlds(major changes in the ice ages). No examples I can think of, yet.

Others expand throughout the stars and conquer the galaxies they are in. Eg. Renegade Legion, SW, Culture, W40K.

Humanity, along with a great deal of other spacefaring races, are now the 3rd tier of universe civilization. Nobody knew of the great plan once set for humanity, and even the 2nd gen races(when they could be found), had only the slightest inkling of it.

And then my story starts on an insignificant Terran Galaxy, populated by warlike humans who walk around killing each other in huge bipedal walking machines, who had expanded only 3000 light years from their home planet. They are politically fragmented, but their centuries of war had toughened them, which would be useful.

Because the great enemy is approaching their worlds. Thankfully for these humans, the fleet they face is the weakest in terms of tech and numbers... (Hey, I have to even the odds a bit!)

Tech levels aren't too obscene for much of the story yet. Definitely not Culture level for 3rd gen races, but certainly for 2nd gen races, which won't appear so early. Artificial FTL travel and communications, a mix of modes from different series. Intergalactic travel(later on) via conduit points ala Starfire, but without interpenetration. Normal space drives are mostly reaction based, except for the more advanced races, who use reactionless drives. Most of them on the link here.
http://www.fanfiction.net/read.php?stor ... &chapter=2

Weapons taken from the whole gamut of space opera genres, but planet killers(Superlaser, Temblor Bomb, Sun Crusher types) are rare.

As for my characters, most of them start out as normal humans(that is, they're pushovers, albeit highly and not so highly trained pushovers), but as events proceed, they would discover that their true origins are actually a bit more complicated, and that they would develop abilities and skills that could effectively make them gods. They would need those skills to fight off the enemy commanders, which are the fallen first ones. But it's a long journey to omnipotence, with no guarantees they can make it that far. Heck, most of them might even have problems getting through their OCS courses!

I've already finished the first book of my story on ff.net. It's set in a familiar universe(Battletech) first, and would then crossover to other galaxies in time. The setting I've set out here is just the backdrop, to be gradually revealed over the next few books.

"Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic."

You try telling us that in 50 thousand years we won't have planet busting galaxy crunching super weapons. Just go on and try.
You're free to create whatever kind of universe you want. I would never try to tell another person what they are entitled to create. I can, of course, defeat your statement simply by pointing out that there isn't even a theory on breaking the speed of light. Period. There is no reason to think we will ever break that barrier, "Nothing beyond Light Speed" is a law of physics. Now, for fictional purposes we can ignore it and do (I don't have to because a zombie can shuffle from the Scimitar to the Cave in an hour) for our stories, but without FTL humans will never find a way to destroy Galaxies, or if they do from the time the weapon is used it will be nearly 200,000 years before the effects reach Earth. So you see, in 50,000 years without some healthy servings of technobabble or ignoring the laws of physics as we know them, we'll never blow up galaxies.

But such statements are pointless, Sci-Fi is about possibilities, new technologies making the impossible, possible. If you wish to create a Galaxy-busting society, go ahead. However it would be nice to see stories, characters, and settings when people describe their worlds rather than "1000000 giggaton weapons and billions of ships." I merely found it odd that, of the universes presented, all but a very small handful are basically focussed on how powerful their weapons were, how many star systems they ruled, how many ships they had. I suppose it's normal for people who follow vs. debating to make uber universes to win fights here but where's the people talking about plot? Heck, most of the people here didn't even mention if they had any main characters or not. Just figures on weapons. It feels like nothing more than vs. fodder and I find it mildly disturbing.

Does that mean we should post a bit of what our plot's like as well?

It isn't "invincible and god-like" in relation to other civilizations in the Cuture books, but it is still the most powerful civilization that is known (excluding the excession).
And the sheer power of the Culture is only a small part of the books : good stories, good characters, humour, en bref very entertaining and enjoyable.
I agree with this.

I doubt that we have anything that can literally destroy the planet, let alone the solar sytem. What is it you speak of?

Personally I'd rather see a teaser of the plot (obviously not a major spoiler as I'd probably like to read it myself) and perhaps a few character sketches of the main characters and villains, than a description of how many starships and how bad their weapons are.

Mine is born out of an Epilogue in a book, the book was one of the Novels of the Lone Wolf series. (I was still in senior school when I read it) after the story was done, it fast forwarded, to a Historian being told the story you'd just read and then setting off in his car to the feul station where he filled up on Magic energy... I don't know why but that oh Five pages caught my interest, an interest that took a few years to actualluy turn into anything but then I devolped the idea into a world of my own, Scraped it, and started again. Note it takes my Love Of Fantasy and the Elvish Species.

In my idea

Many Worlds in the Galaxy have a field of Magic energy, and many do not, this field does not affect the Planet's abilty to sustain life, but it does affect the path that life will take. On Planets with Mages and magic come to the fore and their seems to exist a Technological wall that they can't cross. after a certain point it becomes hard for species from these worlds to grasp Technology. On The worlds without this field well they are very technologically minded. Earth was/is a Planet with a Magic field. Before the Dinosaur's Life existed, Sentent life, they existed much like we do, but through MAgic. Then Invader's came, an enemy that devoured Worlds, a bit like the many Hive species that exist, except crossed with Undead the Invader's are ruled by a Council, and where the only self willed creatures in the invader's the rest where mindless creatures, existing only to serve the will of their master's who feed of the energy of worlds that can sustain life.

The first Wave was fought off, and fifty or so years passed without incident, the incursion spured on Magic research, and spells got more powerful, which was fortunate as the next wave arrived, and another after that, always they where fought off but they always returned fifty years later. Still it was bareable, but then the gaps between invasions shrunk to thirty years or so, then again to fifteen, and the defender's realised they where being overwhelmed. Remember my Love for Elves' well guess what these are, they couldn't replace the population losses and so they devolped a new stratagy. They loved the planet of their Birth, but it was clear they where doomed, and the Earth if they stayed here, and they now had the power to leave, so they did, but first they altered the very fabric of our planet, hiding the field of Magic turning it into a shield against the invader's.

The Problem is they need that Magic to survive hence why they leave, and Earth is reborn, we arise as Technoligal species, but the Magic cannot be denied us, as it is a Birth right, so when the shield starts to end. (Which was the plan) and magic returns where in a unique situation understanding both Magic and Technolgy, which is a good thing as where in the middle of the devourer's territory surronded, and a nice big target. The Original Species returns to teach us Magic, and other Technolgical species arrive to advance our knowladge of Technolgy. (theres an alliance against the enemy, but neither Tech Species or MAgic species even working together can do what we are able to do, and mix the two together because Neither side can accept or understand the other's concept's it's like trying to explain colour to a person who was born Blind.

Of course the invader has changed a bit, now it has allies who surrended without a fight, and fill the positions of Generals uttery Loyal to the Council but with a knowladge of self which none of the grunt conquored species have.
From a review of the two Towers.... 'As for Gimli being comic relief, what if your comic relief had a huge axe and fells dozens of Orcs? That's a pretty cool comic relief. '

I have a few things I have created:

1. My Avenger/Mars stories, about humans selling themselves as Mercinaries to very alien aliens, based on the fact that the Humans Scare the F***, out of everybody because we are the most warlike society they have ever encountered. (Except of course for the "Storm" aliens, who just consume systems and no one knows what they really look like.)

2. My "Saints" universe, which basically revolves around a group of psychic vampire children, who cover their activities by using violent crimes.

3. "Steelmaster", a fantasy world, full of intrigue and corruption, where the elves are outlaws who can't stand iron.

Just make sure Alyss doesn't mess things up again! I never thought I'll see another fan of the LoLW series!

The edning was a sort of cop out, because the word limit prevented John Grant from fully describing the return from the Maakengorge. So he compromised by writing those five pages, which turned ut to be a brilliant piece of improvised technique.

The enemy that devoured worlds sounded like a mix of the Posleen and the Horrors from Earthdawn and Shadowrun. They're also a lot like my bad guys as well, except my bad guys have access to tech, and are willing to breed sentients for food(both physical, mental, or otherwise) and industry. Why conquer when you can farm them?

BTW, LW is alive and well, and I've already written him into my stories as a shadowy manipulator in the background. Quite a far cry from his swashbuckling days, but then again, he's a marked man these days.

And beware of the wild beasts!

Two universes:

One, more developed and my "main" work, is the "Empires" universe-- several stories of which are posted in the FanFics section. Tech level is slightly below that of Star Wars. There are two primary gov'ts, the Central Alliance (not really "good" but the one with the least guilty secrets) and the Irrykanoi Republic, an opressively politically-correct police state.

Both gov'ts could build something like a Death Star but neither would-- too much money, too much material, and there's nothing you can do with a blown-up planet. Habitable real estate is not so common, so folks try to avoid damaging it. I am following the stories of small groups of people that start out life at the bottom and gradually work their way up. Their lives and concepts change throughout this and society changes as well. Princiles are challeneged, lost, gained or rationalized, etc.

It takes place away from Earth, I haven't decided what tech level Earth would be at if they encountered it. Numerous other, smaller gov't exist. There are aliens in it; the Centralty is a mixed compact of aliens and humans, while most of the other gov'ts are species-oriented. The Irrykanoi are a power-sharing gov't between human and one other species.

The other story is pure fantasy; a band of 9 people from modern Earth (and from all walks of life) are summoned by a evil mage that wants to know basically the secret of 'everything' and gets this weird mix of people. It is not their technical innovations (althrough there are some of those) but their ideas which revolutionize things-- and fucks them up, too, as the natives contemplate the concepts of 'Communism' and 'Jihad'...

I've got another idea for a near-Eath future of darkness and oppression, but it is back-burner and I have only a couple of tales made up about it, one of which is posted in the FanFics section as "A Good Citizen". I've doneno other work in this area and I doubt I will do much in the forseeable future.
Something about Libertarianism always bothered me. Then one day, I realized what it was:
Libertarian philosophy can be boiled down to the phrase, "Work Will Make You Free."

In Libertarianism, there is no Government, so the Bosses are free to exploit the Workers.
In Communism, there is no Government, so the Workers are free to exploit the Bosses.
So in Libertarianism, man exploits man, but in Communism, its the other way around!

There are the Homonda which were superior to the Culture in Consider Phlebas, and at least equal by the time of Player of Game and Look to Windward. In the latter, it is IIRC stated that 12 civilizations in the Galaxy have technology equal or close to the Culture's one, and that 7 of them should theoretically be military able to fight the Culture and possibly defeat it.

My little story I have been working with is like a mix between Star Wars and Star Trek (not a SW vs ST type story) I'm borrowing some tech from both of them and makes up a totally new universe. The firepower are equal to SW if not little stronger. But the story is to be set around the characters.

The story:
A new threat is slowly growing beyond the reach of the Galactic Federation Alliance, an alien power is planning the downfall of all the empires in the galaxy. But Galactic Federation Alliance is the most dominated power is about to become their first target.
Unknowing of the threat the Federation Alliance captain Jonathan is sent out by his first mission on a old junk cruiser to patrol near the Frontier Worlds buts gets sucked in wormhole on his way and stays gone for a week.
Finally after several days of searching of the missing ship a shuttle is discovered by the Dark Primus one of the latest warships designs in the fleet and discovers Jonathan onboard unconscious inside it. Here you get to know the ship and the main characters.
Jonathan wakes up but remembers nothing what happened after the ship disappeared. But he gets constant nightmares and starts to believe unknown alien forces have influenced him mentally. The answer might lie inside the wormhole that may bring destruction to the whole galaxy.

So there are actually two threats to the stability of the galaxy. And that is just the pilot of the fanfic I'm currently writing. The story itself has been seen before that evil/unknown/uber powerful aliens suddenly invades the galaxy. Well that’s not exactly how the story will set out.
