Tokugawa Shogunate of Nippon in Exile aka The Shogunate
After the defeat of the Shogunate proper in Nippon during the Boshin War, the Tokugawa dynasty and it's most important supporters removed themselves by voluntary exile from Nippon proper. They believed at the time that Nippon would crumble under the Meiji reforms and that they would be able to step in at an oppurtune moment. It was not to be.
The dynasty wound up wandering for a while before settling and setting up the Shogunate in Exile. Local resistance was suppressed thanks to a modern weaponary and an absolute will to use it. A half decade long campaign was waged to bring the rather scattered local population firmly under control of the new national government. The local upper class was displaced and the top of the heirarchy firmly populated with the Japanese exile population. Since then the Shogunate has rested lightly on the native populations, the Nipponese exiles keeping to themselves primarily.
The principle social aim at present are the building of a properly industrialized state capable of supporting an effort to retake Nippon. The present power base making this a virtual impossibility a multi-generational effort is presently under way. The keystone this plan being a recruitment of engineering and scientific minds from war torn America and Europe in order to educate a native population. If they cannot out-number, they will out do.
* * *
Militarily the navy so far will probably consist a fairly numerous force of light warships and coastal defense craft. This is an interim solution as the Shogunate is attempting to build a large, modern navy at this point.
The army will consist of a few elite divisions composed of native Nipponese soldiers. The bulk of the army consisting of native troops signed up for the possibility of social advancement, the promise of education, and a reasonable pay. Currently the bulk of the officer corps is Nipponese exiles but they are making an attempt to raise a corps of native officers as well.
* * *
Socially the nation is organized by the clans and is some what feudal. The Japanese control large swathes of territory and employ native labor for the production of food, cotton, and the raising of other crops. The native population forms much of this laboring class which is often at present rather uneducated.
There is a growing middle class of natives as they are educated to fill administrative, skilled trade, and governmental positions. Many of these are discharged military men who have recieved a state sponsored education.

A brief History of The Incorporated Republic of Crossroadia
It has been said that War is good for business. At the beginning of the Great War that began almost over 30 years ago, the great corporations of Europe salivated in collected anticipation of the need of industrial that was sure to come. Indeed in the beginning it was a golden age of wealth and lucrative business contracts for the most prominent of industrials. Ships, arms, guns, all saw their profits soar as the madness of war swept the nations of Europe.
Industry saw the war as something that could only bring more profit, and gave it not a second thought that anything else could befall the mighty nations. Yet the war went on, year, after year, after year. Each year slowly ground away the great economies of Europe, more and more nations found themselves scraping for anything they could find as their coffers grew bankrupt and their industrial infrastructure shattered.
The great corporations of Europe, that in the beginning had helped usher in war, now found themselves slowly bringing about their own destruction. Slowly, the leaders of several industries began secret conferences to save themselves from oblivion.
Driven by little more then the lust of money and rich with the wealth of capital gained by selling arms to Europe, a secret council of eight powerful industrial factions met in the fall of 1880 to work out a bold new alliance. The Eight came from across from the nations of Europe and held names known by all.
General Rupert Plumbean, retired from the British army and head of “Plumbeanian Weapons and Arms”
Director Heratio Maglicuty, Irish owner of a massive private security police firm.
Professor Theodore Throckmorton Head of a large Military Scientific Research firm in Germany
Ambassador Hugo Wizenheimer Ex Governmental powerbroker from Austria
Vice Manager Walter W. Wonker Leader of a main banking firm in Switzerland
Lord Admiral Fredrick Fandango Owner of a major Shiping firm and manufacture in Denmark.
Mr. Eustace Banks Head of a well known Scottish Farmers co-op
CEO Johnathan Andrews An Unknown figure and enigmatic leader
The Eight heads argued that Nationalism was dead. Countries founded on differences of race, religion, creed and colour had become too factionalized and too swept up in their own Fanaticism. Together they pooled their resources, enlisted many life long employees, families, resources and set off to found a new nation based on the simple idea of the Corporation.
Over the course of five long years, the, in secret at first, began to close and shut down factories, and slowly move important machines of industry away from the doomed nations of Europe. Deciding to start fresh, far, far away from the Turmoil of the old world, they slowly moved their asserts far to the East. Settling on one of the largest islands of their regions, they slowly began anew. Laying claim to what was known as Borneo, they quickly set about founding a new nation, one built from many creeds and oaths.
The new government, simply known as “Crossroads Incorporated” Delegated each of the heads a section of the Island to develop according to their histories, experiences and power.
Each section was formed into small Business towns where corporate owners ruled politics. A form of Democracy was established by which towns where subdivide into groups of 1000 employees, these groups would each elect a representative who would lobby Executives in power on what the will of the people wished. How well the will is actually listened too is open to debate.
None the less, small towns grew, fed by thousands of out of work labours from the old world. With the nations of Europe in Economic collapse, the promise of work and pay attracted many from across the seas. The mix of so many languages, religions and different culture invariably led to turmoil in the beginning. Yet the young Leader, Johnathan Andrews ruled with an Iron fist from the capital, and while not cruel, none the less enforced harsh laws to keep the Employees in check.
Now, as the nation comes to prominence, it sets it’s eyes on the flood of nations seeking to escape as well. Holding true to it’s open and industry seeking nature, new arrivals are viewed more as new business partners then as rivals, and after the disaster that befell the Old World, the leaders of Crossroadia view peace as far more profitable then war.

The People's Republic of India
Head of State: President Eli Greene
Head of Government: Prime Minister Reginald Cohen
History
The Third Mutiny that erupted in India after the start of the Great War in Europe pushed British colonists to the edge. The British Indian Army, stretched thin by the recall of troops to fight for the home islands and the rightful queen, struggled to hold back the native forces threatening to destroy the gem of the British Empire. Despite their lack of manpower, it at first appeared that they would succeed.
However, the decision of the Royal Portuguese Governor to supply arms to the rebelling Indians ended any chance of holding onto the interior of India. With modern weapons and a huge numerical advantage, the natives forced the colonists to free back to Madras, the original colony of the British East India Company. With the help of Loyalist Indians, the British made their last stand, and stymied efforts of the native princes to take back these last refuges of British power in the Orient. Soon, the rebelling Indians fell upon each other in a series of religious and territorial wars that would result in the creation of the Hindu Raj. This gave the colonists time to rebuild and reorganize to the point that they were able to repel any more attempts by the Indians to remove them.
Soon, the British were joined by radicals from Europe, fleeing the warfare and oppression that continued on the continent, and from abolitionists who emigrated from the United States after its inability to win the war against the Confederacy when they won French aid. The ferocious religious wars in the interior also drove many Muslims and moderate Hindus seeking religious freedom to the eastern coast.
Government
The colonists who survived the Third Mutiny felt no loyalty to the new British Monarch, or the monarchy in general. They felt abandoned by their mother country, and saw themselves as a new nation that had proven itself through its own tenacity and self-reliance. With the help of the new immigrants, the colonists in 1872 created a new Constitution, and formed the People’s Republic of India.
The governmental style was a compromise between the Presidential system advocated by the Americans and the Parliamentary system promoted by the British and most of the other European immigrants. The nation is led by the President who is elected by the majority of the people, but he shares his power with the Parliament. While he chooses his Prime Minister and the members of his government from the Parliament, they must confirm these choices. The system was designed to put the President in charge of foreign policy, while the Prime Minister handles domestic policy.
Politics
The People’s Republic of India believes that the Great War was caused primarily by nationalism, and the different, petty groups each pushing for there own slice of Europe to rule. Because of the influence of the abolitionists from the United States, the people of the Republic believe that all human beings are equal, and thus push for greater international cooperation.
There are currently two factions in the government, the Modernists and the Internationalists. The Modernists believe that the way to create international cooperation is by being a beacon of progressive ideas, using trade, education, and diplomacy to build harmony between men and nations. They fear excessive military spending will lead to the same type of arms race that they believe caused the Great War. The Internationalists are more radical, however, and believe that a strong military is necessary to preserve the enlightened politics of the Republic. The most radical Internationalists even believe that force should be used to spread the Republic’s beliefs to less enlightened nations, but they are marginalized by the leaders of the faction.
The current President, Eli Greene, is a Modernist, as is most the majority of the Parliament. However, the Internationalists have made larger gains in recent elections, as the public is spooked by the large buildup of military force by other nations in the Indian Ocean.
Military
Because the Hindu Raj still covets its territory, the Republic has maintained a large army built around a professional core of soldiers armed with the most modern weapons available. The original colonist have not forgotten that the Real Estado da India supplied the rebelling natives with arms, and so still view them with distrust, and, fearing that they may be hostile again, have pushed for large coastal forts to keep their large navy at bay.
However, the naval forces of the Republic are much smaller, due to the fact that the Modernists have controlled the government for decades. In fact, until recently, the only naval forces to speak of were aging, bulky torpedo boats built by the colonists after their naval forces left for England in the 1860’s. However, with the recent political gains of the Internationalists, and growing public pressure, President Greene has been forced to modernize the Navy. The Torpedo Boats were refitted with 12 pound guns and converted into Torpedo Destroyers, and several large capital ships were created to defend local waters.
Greene feels that this naval force is sufficient, but the Internationalists are pushing for more, and the public largely agrees with them. With new parliamentary elections coming in sixth months, this may threaten the Modernist hold on the government.
Cities of the People's Republic
Masulipatnam- One of the first British settlements, Masulipatnam is the Republic’s second major port. With President Greene’s ship building initiative, Masulipatnam has also been transformed into a major shipbuilding center, with steel from Arcot brought in by railway. The aging Dutch built fort of the same name was modernized by the People’s Republic, and now defends the city from any sea based threats.
Nellore- Nellore was a major source of rice for the Republic until a deadly strain of fungus devastated the crop. Farmer’s now grow cotton, which is processed in the textile factories in the city, and opium, which is legal in the People’s Republic. Nellore also converts opium into laudanum for medical purposes.
Poonamallee- Poonamallee, as during British times, is a garrison town for the Army. New recruits are trained here, and most arms used by the People’s Republican Army are manufactured here as well.
Madras- Madras is the capital of the People’s Republic, and both the President’s mansion as well as the House of Parliament are located here. Madras is also the country’s major port and industrial center. Fort Independence, still referred to as Fort St. George by many of the former colonists, despite it’s renaming by the new government, guards the sea entrances into the city.
Arcot- Recent discoveries of coal deposits have transformed Arcot from a textile center to a major mining and smelting town. Arcot has turned into a major railway destination, as it takes in iron brought in from overseas and ships out steel to other cities.
Cuddalore- The school constructed by the British East India Company is Cuddalore has expanded into the People’s Republic’s first University. Many of the academics who fled from Europe settled here, and together with grants form the new government, created the University of Cuddalore. Topics taught span from the liberal arts to the sciences, and students are accepted from across the Indian Ocean. Progressive values, such as internationalism and human rights, are stressed here, and it is a major cornerstone of the Modernist plan to spread the nation’s political ideals across the world.
Tranquebar- Tranquebar is the main grower of saffron in the People’s Republic. Incredibly expensive, this spice is sold both inside the nation and to other parties across the Indian Ocean. Because of this wealth, Tranquebar has grown far past its humble beginnings as a Dutch missionary town, and is now one of the richest cities in the Republic.
People’s Republican Navy
The People’s Republican Navy is designed to defend local waters only; political considerations have prevented any effort to be put into force projection. Because of this, no cruisers have been constructed, and the navy only consists of battleships and torpedo boat destroyers.

The Union of Greater East Indus
Flag of the Union:
Map of the Union showing the three states (The Holy Empire of Annam, the Dominate of the Khmer) as well as the major cities. Capital cities are marked in red (Angkor the capital of the Khmer, Amaddon the capital of Annam). Also shown is the current state of the trans-Indo-Chinese railroad.
The Union of Greater East Indus consists of two independent states united by their precarious strategic position and solidified by a single constitution and representation as far as Foreign Affairs are concerned.
HISTORY
Since before the dawn of the Great War, Indo-China was controlled by European Powers ruling from afar. The Khmer people were controlled by the nation of France, which used it merely as a base to launch further colonization efforts into the East Indies, while forcing its people to labour mercilessly to repair boats and equipment damaged in the travels to Asia. The Annamese were held by the English , its inner regions led by puppet rulers while the coast was ruled directly from England. Its people, too, were enshackled by European Lords seeking fortune or solitude in the jungles.
The Dominate of the Khmer:
At the dawn of the Great War, before the true extent of its ravages were realized, French soldiers were siphoned away from the colonies, and warships no longer docked at the harbours. For a long time the Khmer people had resented their occupation, but the occasional revolts were defeated by the discipline and numbers of French soldiers.
But a man now known only by his assumed name, Suryavarman, after the mighty old king of the Khmer Empire had been preparing for a long time for a time when their erstwhile rulers would be vulnerable.
In a well-coordinated and planned assault, thousands of Khmer people, wielding rifles stolen or bought in the black markets, stormed the French offices and barracks in all of the cities and ports. This was a hammer-blow. The skeleton forces left in the colony were easily overwhelmed and surrendered. They were executed immediately.
Suryavarman, who had studied both his own peoples' history and that of Europe extensively, had no love for any aristocratic concepts after years of his people toiling under a foreign elite. He re-organised his state into something like a military dictatorship: a council composed of the top generals and public leaders elected by their constituents would lead the country in day-to-day affairs, with the entire process overseen by a 'Dictator', who held supreme executive power. Upon his death, a new leader would be chosen from among the council by the council. Overtime, he believed, this would lead to a more pure and worthy aristocracy than any Foreign monsters.
The Annamese:
Seeing their neighbours to the south free themselves made the Annamese very much aware of their own possibilities for revolt, and their British occupiers understood it too. Violence began to sweep through the Southern areas, but without the direction of any leader the people could not overwhelm their lords. As it moved North, many of the white men tried to escape. Many were cut down by mobs of poorly-armed peasants.
But a man named William Amaddon, the ruler of the puppet state of Northern Laos, was both insanely clever and insanely brave. Reading though old texts of the history and religion of the Dai Viet, he had begun in previous years to build a religion around himself. He wrote a Holy Book which was a bizarre amalgamation of Anglican Christianity and the traditional folk religions of the Annamese. By the time the revolution reached his county, nearly all of the people were his followers, and his religion was spreading. He was not an English conqueror, but their God-Emperor, returning son of the Sun, with Divine Mandate to save them and drive out their enemies.
Needless to say, he was not particularly loyal to the Crown, and became the leader the Annamese so needed. He forced remaining white men into his service. He was God, and they were his angels. If any proved treacherous, he had them beheaded publicly.
Before he managed to consolidate his rule, almost nine-tenths of the White settlers were killed by native revolutionaries. The remaining few became Governors in the newly-redrawn territories of the Empire.
With the Mandate of Heaven, he built a clergy and doctrine. His religion became a virus: it was about the glorious future of Annam, the bright manifest destiny laid out in God's words secretly spoken to Emperor William the First. He re-named the capital of Northern Laos after himself, as well as several months of the year and made his birthday a national holiday.
The Union:
The three nations described by one thing were united by one thing: fear. Both Annam and the Khmer border on the large, powerful, fanatically Muslim Sultanate of Siam. Thus, ten years ago the two nations ratified a single constitution and became a dual state ruled equally from two thrones, each controlling his own domestic affairs, but jointly controlling the military and foreign affairs. Since then a railroad engineered by Dutch scientists has linked all of the major cities of the nation, and a full policy of conscription has been approved.
Current leaders: Dictator Jayavarman, of the Dominate
Emperor William the First, of Annam
Military Strength:
As a primarily land-based nation, most of the Union's resources are devoted to its army, with its navy composed of slow, heavy, well-armed and armoured torpedo boats and battle cruisers to patrol the coast.

A Brief History of the Islamic Republic of Oman
With the decline of her Empire from 1860 Great Britain began to abandon her outlying territories so as to hold on to what she could; this was in some respects similar to the Roman Empire's abandonment of Britain itself in the fifth century. One of the first territories to be so "trimmed" was the Sultanate of Muscat and Oman.
After 1856 the Al Sa'id dynasty that ruled the Sultanate from the city of Muscat had maintained its rule primarily by virtue of British military assistance. Continually under pressure and sometimes direct assault from the devout Ibadi tribes based in Nizwah in the interior of Oman, the Al Sa'ids commanded little popular support outside the capital and without British assistance their days were numbered. In 1875 the Sultan Turki bin Sa'id had his army defeated in the field by a coalition of tribesmen, who then were able to take Muscat by storm. The Sultan and the entire Al Sa'id clan were put to the sword and the council of imams who had led the revolt settled in the erstwhile palace to determine the government to follow.
There then developed a conflict between the extreme fundamentalists and the moderates (much the minority) in the movement; the extremists were determined to build up in Oman a perfect Islamic union with laws administered harshly and directly from the Qu'ran. The moderates preferred to maintain a policy of toleration and pacific relations with other nations, and to modernize Oman while maintaining Arab culture and Muslim religion. This schism deepened and threatened to erupt into full-scale war, which the moderates would almost certainly lose, but events conspired to their advantage.
The coastal Arabs of Oman, though they had given only lukewarm support to the Al Sa'ids now determined that they would have to act to preserve their priviliges from an overreaching Islamist movement out of the interior. Members of the moderate faction actively courted their support, which brought with it the then small but still significant Omani navy. As the majority of the population subsisted along the coast, the fundamentalist factions found themselves outmaneuvered; together with infighting and lack of leadership, this meant that the moderates gained control of the agenda. They moved quickly to establish a compromise solution--there would be no more Sultanate, but also no Imamate.
Instead, a system of limited democracy was instituted, with each clan grouping having one vote in a national legislature. This legislature (Shura) then selected a national president and a body of ministers to carry out the laws. The definition of "clan" was left up to the government to determine, and the moderates moved to secure their hold by making historically fundamentalist clans individual larger and moderate coastal clans smaller, thus distorting the vote. To mollify the imams, they were placed in control of one half of the Republic's judicial system--Oman has Temporal Courts, in which a magistrate presides over trials for violation of Omani law, as well as Sharia Courts, which apply only to Muslims (the vast majority of the population) and judge violations of Islamic Law as presided over by an imam.
Each wilayat, or province, of Oman elects two representatives to the Shura. Initially composed of 110 men, the Shura expanded even as Oman expanded northward into the Trucial States (as of 1890, the border rests just beyond Abu Dhabi), such that it now counts 122 seats. The Shura has the power to draft laws and controls the purse strings of the Republic, but otherwise has little power. The current President of Oman, Ismail bin Haroun al Katiri, aims to continue the Republic's expansion into the trucial states and reestablish Omani preeminance over the East African coast, though he has preferred peaceful policies of trade and diplomacy over violence.
Because of the Republic's even-handed religious policies and the fundamentalist nature of the Kaliphate, Oman has become a primary sink for emigration of religious minorities and dissenters from the Kaliphate. Moderate Sunnis driven off by the extremely strict Sharia laws, persecuted Shi'ites, as well as smaller religious groups like the Zoroastrians of Iran and Christian Copts of Egypt have made new homes in Oman. This has led to a population explosion, although Ibadi-practicing Omani Arabs still make up a majority. Ibadi has also even made considerable inroads in converting the new immigrants; its combination of social and intellectual liberalism with theological conservatism is especially appealing to those who have fled the extremist Kaliphate, and its status as a school of Islam predating the Sunni-Shi'a split has allowed it to speak to both sides.
The primary demographic tension is over the extension of the voting franchise to the refugees. Oman's tribally based voting system would tend to deny the franchise to all immigrants, who almost invariably belong to no tribe recognized by the Omani voting commission. Radicals in the government have called for a one-man-one-vote suffrage, while moderates suggest a compromise policy of organizing immigrants into tribes for voting purposes; conservatives deny the right of any non-Ibadi to have any vote at all.

Mostly forested islands. Mariana has a coalmine which is being expanded.
Wood of all islands is transferred to Ostarrichi for the charcoal plants.
Several expeditions of the University of Neu Lemberg explore the islands, looking for raw materials or natural products of commercial or industrial value.
History:
as former Venetian trading post they were aquired by France when Napoleon conquered Venice, captured by the Royal Navy during their Indian Ocean campaign and handed over to Austria-Hungary when Prince Metternich insisted on getting all former Venetian territories.
Used as penal colony at first like Australia, the first settlers were mostly political opponents who could choose between fortress arrest or a life in exile.
At the same time, lots of people found the idea of settling in a colony challenging and went voluntarily, either as farm-owners, workers or businessmen.
The new settlers at first treated the native popoulation as obstackle, but the arrival of the new governor-general, Franz-Karl von Habsburg and his wife Sophie. Recognizing the need for good relations, they granted the few native tribes slowly the same rights the settlers and reconized them as one more folk of the multiethnical Autro-Hungarian empire. While several influential settlers opposed this, they saw reason when the incidence of sabotage and sneak attacks on expeditions was reduced to nearly zero.
When iron and sulfur were discovered, the influx of settlers and businesses rose to new heights.
Mines, silk production facilities and spice plantations emerged all over the islands, railroad lines, harbors and small dockyards were constructed to connect the islands with each other and the motherland.
The merchant fleet expanded, and together with it the imperial and royal Austrian navy, which kept as strong force there as protective squadron.
Cruisers regularly patrol the surrounding area, while torpedo boats are ready for inshore patrol and coastal defence.
Since the eldest son of Erzherzog Franz Karl returned to Europe to assume the Imperial-Royal throne, his younger brother Franz Martin assumed the governorship.
An elected council has regional legislative rights, but for foreign affairs or military business the Archduke as representative of the Emperor-King is the supreme law of the islands. Administrative work is performed by an experienced corps of civil servants.
After some hesitation, the council convinced the archduke to officially declare independence to acknowledge unspoken facts. The Kingdom of Ostarrichi was proclaimed on January 1st, 1889, and the former Imperial and Royal Governor-General became Franz Martin I, King of Ostarrichi and its Dominions.
Extremist elements who wanted to establish an independent republican government created unrest, this mutiny was quenched quickly by army and navy units loyal to the new King of Ostarrichi.
Cruisers regularly patrol the surrounding area, while torpedo boats are ready for inshore patrol and coastal defence.
A fleet expansion program based on the enlarged dockyards in Miramare has been approved. More torpedo boat destroyers and cruisers will join the fleet, new designs for armored cruisers and battleships are on the drawingboards.

History:
as former Venetian trading post they were aquired by France when Napoleon conquered Venice, captured by the Royal Navy during their Indian Ocean campaign and handed over to Austria-Hungary when Prince Metternich insisted on getting all former Venetian territories.

The Batavian Conglomerate OoB
As the Netherlands were more and more consumed in the Great War, interest in her colonies waned, and couldn't afford its colonies. Local merchantmen, the governor, the military, and remnants of the former Dutch East India Company plotted and planned to take over. It was fairly easy as the former mother had other problems at that time. The newly founded Batavian Conglomerate has a vital interest in trade, though imperialistic, expansionist ideas float the upper ranks of Batavians.
The Batavian culture is influenced both by the Dutch and local populace. It has adopted a belief of religious freedom. Its citizens enjoy freedom without control, yet the Conglomerate watches and observes silently. It is believed that a complacent, ignorant populave is best for stability and a positive outlook into the future a driving factor of economic success.

The Alliance of United Kingdoms (AUK)
A Brief History of the Alliance of United Kingdoms
The Alliance of United Kingdoms traces its roots back to the end of the British Usurpations of the late 1860's. With Victoria's bid for the Crown defeated in 1868, Captain Richard Blair, a supporter of Victoria, decided to strike out on his. Taking his ironclad cruiser HMS Indefatigable, he captured the island of Sumba from the the Dutch East India Company, establishing himself as Richard the First and Sumba as a safe haven for European exiles. Within a few years however the natives began a bloody Guerilla war. By 1874, with the help of the Kings of the neighboring Islands of Sumbawa and Flores, the natives had besieged the capital of Victoriaville. Rather than fight it out however, King Richard decided to negotiate, and the ensuing Settlement of 1874 brought peace to the Island. It gave the natives full rights and representation in the Parliament, and allied Sumba with its two neighbors. Over the years this alliance closened, and in 1879 the three monarchies merged to form an Alliance of United Kingdoms, headed by the Council of Kings, which annually elected a "King of Kings" to rule the three islands. Ten years later, after the Timroesse Islanders threw out both the Dutch and Portougesse colonists, the AUK accepted a Timoresse petition to join the Alliance, which now ecompassed four major islands. The AUK is in the process of industrializing the Alliance up to modern levels.
The Government of the Alliance of United Kingdoms (AUK)
The AUK is not a single, monolithic state. Rather, it is a federation made up of the firve kingdoms and their various islands, that make up the AUK. Each of the five kingdoms (those of Sumba, Sumbawa, Flores, West Timor, and East Timor) is relatively autonomous in its internal affairs, but is by law politicaly subservient to the central government. The five monarchs of the Alliance form the Council of Kings, the highest governing body of the Alliance. The council elects one of its members to be the symbolic head of the Alliance every five years. Termed the "King of Kings," he is the symbolic head of state, and Commander in Chief of the Royal Alliance Navy. Richard I, King of Sumba, has held the title King of Kings for the AUK's entire existence, due to his kingdom's wealth and industrial/tehcnological power.
The lower governing body of the Alliance, the Parliament, is made up of delegations from each of the five kingdoms, and is charged with the everyday buisness of government. It also has a limited right to challenge royal authority, and in practice has an equal say in setting Alliance policy. Each Kingdom elects its delegation differently. Sumba, with its strong British influence, elects its delegation by popular vote. The delegation from Flores, on the other hand, consists of the island's ruling nobility.
Cities and Islands of the AUK
Red for major cities, black for smaller towns.
Victoriaville- The capital of the Kingdom of Sumba, and the seat of government for the entire AUK. Victoriaville is a wealthy, industrialized trading center. The plentiful coal deposits from mining towns in Sumba's interior are shipped through Victoriaville. It is also the site of a medium sized naval base as well as minor shipyards, and is protected by a defensive fort.
Kupang- The largest city in the Alliance, Kupang is the Capital of the Kingdom of West Timor. It is an industrail and manufacturing center, utilizing the Iron from the nearby mining town of Soe. It has a small naval base as well as a fort.
Dili- The capital of the Kingdom of East Timor, the town of Dili is the Alliance's main supplier of foodstuffs. It has a small naval base.
Ende- The capital of the Kingdom of Flores, Ende is a small town notable only for the spices sold in its markets.
Raba- The capital of the Kingdom of Sumbawa, it is an industrailized trading city, and is the site of the Alliance's largest Naval Yard and shipyards. It is protected by a fort.
Besar- The town of Besar is well industrialized for its size, and recieves a wide variety of minerals and metals, some of them quite rare, from mines near the center of the island.

The United Parliamentary Kingdom of Ethiopia and Somaliland.
The United Parliamentary Kingdom of Ethiopia and Somaliland.
A Simple history to An Newcomer.
Founded back in the year 1849 by a group of Afro-American refugees from Harper’s War, a series of slave revolts which lead up to the First United States Civil War, a massive conflict in which massive amounts of freed blacks followed the Northern President Lincoln’s famous quote to “My first impulse would be to free all the slaves, and send them back to Ethiopia, to their own native land, heading back under the leadership of the Emperor of Ethiopia at the time Tewodros II, who was intruded b the Outsider’s ideas f western style democracy. In this era however, he realized that they would need access to the coasts, and such, the Ethiopian-Somaliland War began in 1853, with Ethiopia’s US influenced Army training handily defeating the Somalia Sultanate in 1855. After those years, A quick movement to the north was inevitable, and the Somalians agreed to consent to rule by the Ethiopians. The country had religious freedom, due to the Peace treaty with the sultanate, “Such That all men may be allowed to have their own choice in their own Personal God,” was the wording in the new treaty. The Crown Council, mostly made up of the influential US blacks, as they have been called by the natives, has some power, even though all power must go through the King
A quick Economic Primer on the Parliamentary Kingdom
The Kingdom’s current Production crop of Coal is a bumper, with massive deposits of coal being moved with our new “Rail Network” to the coastal cities of Mogadishu, Asseb and Djibouti. Our new crops of Food from the Inner Mountains is also profitable, and we do have some Iron, albeit limited quantities have been mined from the hills. The country is in desperate need of Opium however, since some Americans ha d smuggled in the plant, and We are willing to trade our Food and Coal for opium and Iron, as well as some Sulfur. Our country produces small amounts of Cotton, taken from our brethren in the north, and we would be interested in selling that to any takers. Our Old cotton plants, the oldest in human history, sell some of the best cottons, this side of the Red sea, and we would sell that to you civilians out there.

Crown Colony of Northern Australia
"Oz"
General Info:
Located on the northern coast of Australia, this bit of the British Empire has maintained it status, all to the contrary be damned. Hence, it's still ruled by a Colonial Governor (though the current one was chosen by the prior, and it's been years since news of such should have reached Britain), and it's ships fly the Blue Ensign of the Royal Navy. It remains on good terms with the other colony on the continent of Australia.
It was settled in 1840, with the initial settlement being named Palmerston, near the northernmost tip of Australia. Later coastal settlements were Derby, in a bay on the western edge of the colony, and Karumba, located on a river at the eastern edge. Karumba is the only place on the south coast of the Gulf of Carpentaria that a coastal settlement is viable, all the rest being covered in near impassable tidal flats. Most of it's current inhabitants are refugees, either from the Potato famines, sundry other disasters, or the Great War (including Chinese immigrants from Hong Kong after the departure of British troops). The current population is 3 million.
After the usurpation of the English crown by the pretender Alfred, the colony continued to support Queen Victoria. When her restoration attempt failed, her and her heirs either were executed or went into hiding. Accordingly, though all continue to swear allegiance to the Crown, no one is quite sure who holds it.
The Colonial Governor is the 45 year-old Baron von Wulfenbach, Lord Klaus Battenberg, formerly of Denmark aka "the Wizard". He, along with his "madboys" control the city of Palmerston, along with extensive amounts of territory along the northern coast. Madboys are so called because they are mad scientists, who possess the inborn ability to rapidly progress the field of science, but frequently possess the traits of megalomania and lack of all common sense. Rumors swirl in Palmerston that one of the madboys is the heir to a great fortune, though every rumor has a different answer as to who it is.
The colony is fortunate in that it has been able to raise troops from the settlers, as opposed to depending on whatever troops it had from Britain before the effective end of the Empire. It's home to a nascent shipbuilding industry headed by John I Thornycroft & Co. It's also home to a burgeoning armaments industry, including Nordenfelt Guns and Ammunition Co. Ltd. which, amongst other items, makes Lee-Metford pattern rifles for the army. Another notable refugee company is Gesellschaft zur Förderung der Luftschiffahrt which makes naval scout ships.
Geography of Oz:
Can be generally split into 3 areas, the Gulf (eastern portion), Top End(Central), and Kimberly (Western Portion). Climate is tropical, fading to semi-arid as one goes south. Major cities are Palmerston (Capital), Derby (largest town in Kimberly), Katherine(SE of Palmerston), and Karumba (the Gulf). Karumba is mostly surrounded by dense impenetrable mangrove swamps and impassable tidal flats. Derby is in a semi-arid area.

Some regiments took their colors to Australia after being disbanded at the end of the Great War. Others were raised from colonial citizens. One was neither disbanded and recreated, nor created from whole cloth, but rather took the last boat out of India at the fall of British India.

Real Estado da India
"Royal State of India"
"Portuguese India"
Head of State: Marie III Ana Wadiyar de Braganca of Portugal and Mysore
Head of Government: Joaquim Mouzinho de Albuquerque
History
The Great War and the British Usurpations lead to a massive exodus of British back to the home islands- at first, to fight for their mother country, and later, in support of Victoria's desperate bid to retake the throne. The Third Mutiny was hardly a surprise, considering the circumstances. The vicious brutality with which the natives expelled their former overlords was a shock to many, especially the Portuguese, who owned a number of trading posts and fortresses along the western coast of India.
The previous years had seen a very different trend emerge in Portuguese India. While the English had been leaving, the population of Velha Goa had been swelling. The fall of Portugal in 1863 had forced many to flee to the colonies, and the sale of Mozabique and the other African for war-money had left the fleeing Portuguese with few safe destinations. When the mutiny broke out, Governer José Rodrigues Coelho do Amaral, newly arrived from Macao, chose to supply the revolting princes with modern weapons. This move ensured the survival of the Portuguese fortresses, and doomed those British still holding on with frantic tenacity.
The Indian religious wars a decade later lead to an influx of Muslim natives to the fortified Portuguese cities. Strong alliances with local Maratha princes helped protect the cities from the dangerous weight of the new Hindu Raj.
1879 saw the arrival of two new faces to the colonies. To this point, Goa and the rest of the coastal cities had been ruled aimlessly by colonial governors interested only in self preservation.
How Joaquim Mouzhino smuggled the last surviving member of the deposed Braganzana dynasty out of her Austrian prison is unknown, but the arrival of the 18-year old princess and the grizzled colonial veteran signalled a new age for the beset cities. Within a decade, Mouzhino had succeeded in tying a number of the local principalities into the structure of what was now Royal India, arranging for th Infanta's marriage to Maharaja Chamaraja Wadiyar IX, of the much-reduced Princely State of Mysore. The union of the cities of Goa and Mangalore (the coastal bastion of the rump-state that remained after the invasion of the Hindustani armies) created a powerful axis which dominated southern India.
Other local triumphs included the re-taking of Colombo from Tamil rebels and the construction of the Goan-Mangalore railroad.
Today, the Royal State is extending it's reach. Talk has been made of re-taking Macao from the crumbling Manchu empire, or of confronting Luminifera for control of Mozambique. The ships of the Royal Fleet sail far and wide, bringing wealth to the fortified coastal enclaves which even now need every ounce of strength they have to maintain their independence from competing trading nations and fractured but massive Hindoostan.

The Estados navy adheres to the grand battle doctrine- citing examples such as the sinking of the Spanish Armada, it's admirals contend that victory abroad is acheived by meeting and destroying the core of the enemy's fleet in a single major engagement. This has lead to a somewhat different force than most fleets on the sea. Vast sums have been diverted to the construction of a heavy battle-line, a great stretch that has limited military spending in other areas and forced the Exercito Real (Royal Army) to rely largely on native levies from the "estaçãos-" "Stationers"- civilized Hindus and Muslims from the lands of those Indian princes whose domains through which the Goa-Mangalore railway runs.

Republica de las Filipinas
Marina de Guerra
The great majority of the Old Guard in both the Spanish and Filipine navies are resting in Davy Jones' Locker. The Marina's Admiralty is positively dominated by young idealists, many of whom see the age of the old lumbering battleships as having been brought to an end by the torpedo. Experiments and battle experience have shown that torpedoes have an approximately 50% chance of inflicting critical damage on a warship. Armour below the waterline and special bulges can, at best, cut the damage in half, but at great expense in the ship's overall performance. Because of this, and perhaps paradoxically, the Admiralty both embraces the torpedo itself but eschews torpedo protection. As of 1890, the Marina de Guerra de las Filipinas is light, fast, and numerous. Though it still retains a somewhat balanced order of battle.

Ejercito
A small professional army, all volunteers, highly trained and with good equipment.
Primary weapon: Mosin-Nagant 1888 rifle. Based on the Mosin-Nagant 1885 and adopted shortly after Fabrique d'armes Émile et Léon Nagant relocated to Manila (the Filipinas pays better than the bankrupt Europeans). Comes in standard and carbine versions.
Secondary weapon: Webley Revolver, top-break, holds six .455 Webley rounds. Manufactured locally under license from Webley and Scott.
Infantry Regiment, 3000 men, [60.5]
Standard infantry unit, they are the back-bone of the Ejercito. Armed with Mosing-Nagant '88 rifles, horse-drawn field-guns, and machine-guns.
Light Infantry Regiment, 3000 men, [45]
The light infantry are officially known as the Comando de Fuerzas Contra Guerrilleras. They are colloquially known as the "Contras" or "Comandos". These are, in terms of training, easily the best troops in the entire Ejercito. Most light infantrymen are armed with a Mosin-Nagant '88 carbine, usually a member of each squad has a scoped rifle, and officers tend to wield Webley revolvers. Their lack of machine-guns and artillery make them unsuitable for field battles with conventional troops. However, in the mountains, forests, and jungles, the Contras are ruthless and deadly adversaries.
Artillery Batallion, 1000 men, [30]
The artillery branch of the Ejercito. These units consists of heavy artillery pieces, the crews to man them, and some infantry to provide protection. They are usually attached to an infantry regiment or two.
Cavalry Squadron, 300 riders, [18]
Because of the nature of the terrain in the South-East Asia, large scale cavalry manoeuvres are hard to do and generally ineffective. Thus, cavalry units are small and attached to infantry regiments or battalions. They tend to be used for scouting, raiding, and harassment of enemy formations.
