Yeah, both of those games and their expansions had great cinematic and art design on all levels.

Man, I worded that badly. I used the word "mood" twice, in a really stupid-looking way. But you get my point.

The fact that the Red Alerts were more tongue in cheek than a lesbian orgy certainly didn't hurt.

Am I the only one who, when hearing the opening of Red Alert 2, immediately thinks of Bush when Romanov babbles about his 'legacy'?

Yep - Brood War and RA2 both have very nice intro cinematics. Got to love the quality of the Warcraft 3 ones too.

They both suck. The Supreme Commander intro movie is like a history lesson and the TA intro movie is nothing more than a rolling catalogue of game units.

For my money, the greatest RTS game intro movie ever was Red Alert. It's no contest.
No, RA2 is the superior game and intro :P . (Though I have to agree that the SC:BW intro was beautiful, I have the opera music playing on my ipod).

SC does it better :P (First they get eaten by space insects without worrying then the extermiantors come in  ).
Remember the "Oh Shi-" scenes? Hell of a lot of them in SC. (Blizzard does the best cutscenes out there, barring anything with Hell-march playing :P , and yes, that includes "THe technology of PEACE!")

The Starcraft cutscenes don't really do anything for me. But then, I never really cared for the "OMG SWARM OF REALLY VICIOUS SUPERCRITTERS IS GONNA KILL US ALL" thing ever.

I've always had a spot for the original C&C intro. In the guise of a TV transmission thats breaking into your computer and a channel surfer, you get introduced to how the Tiberium universe differs from our own, despite the similarities. Stuff like the economic channels talking about how Nod controls so much Tiberium, giving them huge leverage in stock markets, terrorist bombings by Nod, the UN's interest in Nod e.t.c.

It really worked well (it was really the first FMV intro I saw that grabbed me and pulled me into the game) for its time. Red Alert was also a good intro for what it was worth. And TA frankly did it right as well. Its much harder to do it for something like TA then for something like a C&C game. It got the spirit of the game presented well...with an awesome soundtrack behind it.

Eh...where's the second half? :P That's a good exposition, bu t any good intro for a game like that needs the 'now some shit dies. In fact, a lot of shit dies' phase after that. I want the second half of the intro!

The original Red Alert had the best intro (for an RTS), simply because the original Hell March is so damn cool. That's not to say the sequel isn't pretty damn close.

The best intro period however, I don't know. Tough one.

Total Annihilation's intro is just like the game- no soul whatsoever. Total Annihilation was a lot of fun, but it was as barren and lifeless as an asteroid.

Looks like Supreme Commander is trying to rectify that- hopefully the in-game plot will make it clear there are actually people involved in this conflict, as opposed to lifeless robots you don't give a fuck about smashing into each other again and again ...

Don't forget the red dagger being thrust into the heart of Europe at the end. Great way to end the intro movie without dragging it out or getting repetitive, and with a powerful punctuation.

The original C&C intro is the first FMV intro I ever saw and it has a place in my heart. The original RA intro was very interesting setting a very dark tone to the game. RA2 had a fun intro, but felt somewhat long. Yuri's Revenge was the better intro with a sense of camp, but far darker.

Tiberian Sun had a pathetic intro. The teaser movie that came with Dune 2000 was better.

Other good game intros.

The original Descent Freespace as well as Freespace 2.

Interesting that no one's mentioned Dawn of War's intro. I liked that one. (Mark of Chaos' intro's pretty snazzy too)

It also subtly hints the Soviets win (albeit, not by giant dagger to the map from space), ergo, play Soviet, or else!

Yeah, but if you play Soviet then you hand the world of to NOD and you don't want them winning, do you?

I just recently saw the Red Alert ending movies for both the Soviets and Allies. The Soviet one is cool, but the Allied one sucks balls. I'm annoyed that matter what you do, Stalin dies.

EDIT - More accurately, I'm annoyed Stalin gets such a shitty death in the Allied ending.

It's pretty funny that some people like intros with ideas, themes, and mood... and some people just like 'zomg teh tankzors and boom splosions rarrr'. I found all the Starcraft cutscenes/intros to be virtually content-free nonsense, certainly nothing as awesome mood establishing-wise as the Freespace intro or the RA hilarity.

And the TA intro? How is it EVEN an intro? What does it 'introduce'? If it'd have a stat breakdown overlaid over the units it'd be a useful introduction... but it's just 'wow tanks woot'.

Matk of Chaos' intro is pretty much the most surprisingly badass intro ever. I mean, not exactly much happens, but damn if that Warrior Priest didn't stand up and account himself. It's also fairly good in building an atmosphere, what with the misty forest and all that jazz ... and the sevants of Chaos coming out of fucking nowhere in plate armour. :)

The original C&C intro looked a lot less awesome than I remember (but in it's defence, quite original

I found the Supreme Commander intro rather "meh". It seemed like some incoherent, uninteresting history lesson

Star Craft: Brood Wars and Dawn of War are my all time favorites. Honorable mention to the RA2 one (the statue of liberty being overshadowed by blimps of Doom!)

Meh. I disliked the DoW cinematic; it made the Blood Raven's look like morons. Then again, so did Dark Crusade.

Psh, didn't you hear them? It was "The Monolith! If we take it out, this is over! Charge!"

Besides, if those marines had real, proper bolters, they would have slaughtered the Orks, and the Necrons. Probably not the Monolith itself though.
