A school program to fight childhood obesity that includes yoga is drawing complaints from some Christian parents in the Quesnel area in B.C.'s Cariboo region.
They say yoga is a religion, and shouldn't be taught in public schools.
Chelsea Brears, who has two children in the school system, said her son was asked to do different poses and "to put his hands together."
Brears, a Christian, said she doesn't want her children exposed to another religion during class time.
"It's not fair to take prayer out, and yet they're allowing yoga, which is religion, in our schools."
Local rancher Audrey Cummings doesn't believe Christian children should be doing yoga at all.
"There's God and there's the devil, and the devil's not a gentleman. If you give him any kind of an opening, he will take that."
The two women have complained to the education minister and the Quesnel school board.
But school board chair Caroline Neilsen said the yoga is being taught as a stretching exercise, not as a spiritual practice.
Neilsen also noted that children who don't want to practise yoga can do different exercises or leave the classroom.
I know Yoga has origins in the Hindu religion. So what do you think of the argument that teaching Yoga in school, even without the spiritual part, is a violation of separation of church and state.
I have no idea what they mean by Yoga being a religion.[/url]

Just more Christofascists crying "persecution" and trying to pretend that "other ideologies" are being given preferential treatment by the Evil Secular Liberal Elite bogeymen. Typical Bible thumper bullshit. I swear I have less patience for Bible thumpers every year.

its all about the money here.
It's not about money. It's about Christofascists who think that the schools should teach creationism and the ten commandments, with school prayer in the morning. They'll look for any hook to get their agenda on the menu, and this is a hook. "Oh look, they're already teaching other religions" as if you can't separate the physical exercise component of yoga from its origins.
There was some similar bullshit a while ago involving karate. A school tried teaching kids martial arts for fitness and self-esteem. Great idea IMO. And then a bunch of Christofascists claimed that they were exposing the children to "eastern spirituality" and that this was a violation of the separation of church and state.

I actually got this story off a yahoo group I belong to. A surprising number of people didn't know Yoga had a spiritual component. But I think the way its marketed in the USA I can't see that being a factor. When I took prenatal yoga, it was in a gym and all it was was an instructor telling you to hold this or that position or stretch. There wasn't even any relaxing music.
If they called it "stretch class" instead of Yoga, I wonder what the response would be.

My grandfather dealt with a situation exactly like this, only it was about thirty years ago. He was the principle at an adult school in northern California, and they started offering classes in Yoga. The turnout was good, and, if nothing else, promoted a more active and healthy lifestyle.
Shortly after, some traveling evangelist came through town, told all the local screwballs that the stretching positions allowed demons to enter into the students' bodies (oh no!), and they protested the class.
My grandfather basically told them to fuck off, but the administration made him close the class. My grandfather is still pissed about it...

How much do you bet that these people would jump at the chance at to get Intelligent Design (or just straight up creationism) into schools? Religion isn't supposed to be taught in school ... unless it's their religion.

I would have loved a Yoga, Karate, or Tai Chi kind of class in school. Or that Brazilian art of karate/dancing- the name escapes me at the moment.
Believe me, the Christian Taliban are getting to where they'd declare Samba classes and the Macarena as Satanic religions. Tends to happen to any movement which decides to cut all ties to reality.

The Macarena I understand .

As I said, this is all about their agenda to pretend that there is some sort of Evil Secular Liberal Elite out there and that Christians are being "persecuted".
When it comes to exaggerated claims of persecution, Christians make "black activists" like Al Sharpton look like Gandhi.

They'd say the class was a waste of money, and that the school should instead create a gospel choir.
Please forgive any idiotic comments, stupid observations, or dumb questions in above post, for I am but a college student with little real world experience.
Honestly it boggles the mind how an inoffensive stretching exercise like Yoga that increases strength and flexibility could be considered religious teaching. Take out the nutty spiritual bullshit and instead focus on the exercises and breathing - easy fix.
But no, teach Yoga and the next thing you know your kids will have dot on their forehead and will be eating curry and worshipping Vishnu and Kali. Not that that's a bad thing - Hindu gods are kewl.
If it's simply the physical-exercise bits that they've been teaching, as I've seen in every depiction of a yoga class I've ever encountered, then these people are being whiny idiots.
If not, and they are teaching the kids something of the spiritual underpinnings of yoga (though I would think that fairly unlikely), then the complainers may have a point.

There is little patience for this kind of semantic bullshit here. You were whining about GR doing his job and whether or not you called him names while doing it is irrelevant.
Next time you try to make a point, think whether what you want to say will add anything new or worthwhile to the discussion before you post.

Been there, done that, had yoga banninated as a program. While having official Catholic education classes that are an alternative to an Ethics class.
Its even worse sounding when you hear the Catholic education class (ok ok, lets be fair - there are classes for Muslims and Orthodox as well! So its all good! You are what? An atheist? Whats that? OMG?!? I guess you can go to the Ethics class. You heretic. - the faux conversation is approximately what a friend of mine got when trying to discuss the issue with a teacher on the tram once, with the heretic being unspoken of course) name untranslated (vjeronauk - literal translation would be teaching of the faith, with religious connotations).
