Disgruntled former Starfleet officer
Fellow travelers, my name is not important at the moment, but this message is. I am a proudly disgruntled Star Trek fan (NOT a Trekkie, for they are beneth me) as recently, I have been removed from command of my ship in a Star Trek PBeM which will remain nameless to protect the innocent and shame the guilty. I was removed because I saw the light, thanks to this wonderful website. (Stardestroyer.net for those in the cheap seats)
I wanted to take some of the lessons I learned here and try to apply them to my now former sim to at the bare minimum make sense of things. However, my effots were not welcomed, even to the point where I was dismissed to my shock and awe. And now I know, the evil Sh!t Lords of Star Trek have many of my now former friends under then control to line their pockets by feeding them sub-standard dribble they call "canon".
To The Powers That Be of this wonderful realm, thank you for allowing me to join your many ranks. I hope that we all can converse peacefully and PURGE our once great genre from the Sh!t Lords. Again, I thank you.
Sincerly,
Darkwyng

Umm, thanks, but please try not to kiss up to anyone. We try to discourage that kind of behaviour.

Personally, I have never understood the conventions. I've never felt any urge to go to one. The closest I ever came to that type of event was stumbling across an autograph signing session in Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas, and that was just because I happened to pass it on the way out of the Forum.

I did one because a cute girl I wanted to date, in my freshman year, was a hidden Trek Geek.Darth Wong wrote:Personally, I have never understood the conventions. I've never felt any urge to go to one.
Boring fucking affairs. Literally it's a bunch of geeks standing around, talking about Trek, sweating in their costumes as people peddle expensive Star Trek stuff. Expensive food, and usually bad air conditioning as well.

I've been to a few, it's mostly just a fun way to meet people with a similar interest. You hang around, discuss Trek and related things and the maybe watch a few episodes on a big screen.Darth Wong wrote:Personally, I have never understood the conventions.

And I do apologize for that. I was one of those simmers that that favored a more militaristic Starfleet. At least to the point where crewmembers could be properly equipped on away missions and not die like redshirts.
Mostly I did Special Operations within Star Trek. However I have some friends in the US Armed Forces that I consult with time and time again about my ops and how to make them Trek-friendly.

It's good that you talk to real army guys. Their input is usually quite refreshing.
The worst sort of fans are the people who don't know about anything but Trek. They often think that Trek cliches are actually realistic rules.

The worst part of Trek's military is how much you have to make up. Literally the shows have rifles and pistols.....and maybe the weird technobabble item of the week.
There is very little hardware to see even from the supposed militaristic societies.

What, you don't consider a bat'leth to be "military hardware"?Ghost Rider wrote:There is very little hardware to see even from the supposed militaristic societies.
Seriously, Trek's writers can never be forgiven for having a bunch of knife-wielding Klingons overrun a Nazi machinegun nest.

Every since I got my sword instructor to bust out laughing for twenty minutes, it classifies as military hardware...only because the enemy will die laughing first. .Darth Wong wrote:What, you don't consider a bat'leth to be "military hardware"?Ghost Rider wrote:There is very little hardware to see even from the supposed militaristic societies.

Yeah, the overrun was one of Voyager's shining moments of What The Fuck.

A silencer on a carbine firing bullets at almost Mach 3?

The purpose of a carbine is to provide a gun which combines some of the advantages of an assault rifle and an SMG. That's why Stark was amused that you would choose to bring a carbine and an SMG. If you wanted long-range accuracy, you'd be better off with a longer rifle. And a silencer on a carbine just doesn't make any sense in any case.Darkwyng wrote:Whoa, silencers slow down projectiles. It wouldn't be on the M4, but I'd have it as an option. THe M4 would be for long-range fighting, and the SMG for close quarters.

Actually, the sound of a rifle bullet doesn't arrive until after the bullet itself does, so if surprise is what you want, snipe them with a rifle. SMGs in Star Trek would be good for spraying corridors during boarding actions, but that's not exactly the sort of time you'd want a silencer either.
