Ten commandments

Post by defanatic »

I sometimes hear of Christians complaining that the Ten commandments can't be put up on courthouses or some such thing. They claim that western morality is based upon it. But how many of those people can list the ten commandments? How many could tell you that there are two sets of ten commandments? How many could list both sets?

Does anyone know the figures on these?

That'd be pretty funny. If you want to have an opinion on display of the Ten Commandments, you have to pass a test to determine if you even know what they fucking ARE. I mean, my grade 9 history class had a chuckle over the 'loyalty to god is more important to minor things like murder, theft etc' element. :)

Steven Colbert humiliated a Bible thumping congressman by doing precisely that: asking him to name the Ten Commandments.

Yes, it did. That really happened.

Outside of Christian academia you'll find that atheist generally know the Bible bettter than most Christians.
The most basic assumption about the world is that it does not contradict itself.

I'm a part time athiest (which means I only attack your religion if you try to shove it down my throat). I only know like three of the commandments and their postions. I know the most of the others but not their positions.
1st, learn't it from SG-1
5th, learn't it from Simpsons
8th, learn't it from Simpsons

Most of the commandments can be learned from TV, these days.

My friend though he's a professional athiest, he knows most of the bible and the commandments. If a Jehovah's witness enters his house an athiest will probably leave.

What the fuck? Since when did atheism become a job position? Either that or this is some pathetically lame attempt at humor.

Unfortunatly, no. Colbert made a big deal about how every Congressman he interviewed for Better Know a District was reelected. ("Now I'm not calling myself a king maker, but...") He even replayed the part of the interview in question and then the word "Re-elected" appeared on the screen.

It could just be poor English: his "profession of faith" is atheism, he professes atheism, he is openly an atheist.

I think it was just a poor choice of words Icehawk used to express a difference of degree between himself and his friend. i.e. Icehawk usually doesn't debate issues of religion and keeps fairly quiet about his atheism unless someone else tries to shove their beliefs down his throat. Hence, he's a "part-time" atheist. His friend, on the other hand, is more open about it and will try to convert people to atheism much more readily, thus he's a "professional" atheist.

I'd rather have Icehawk answer himself instead of wasting time arguing over what he meant to post. But that's just me.

That makes no sense. Why would an atheist flee his own house because some JW showed up on his doorstep? If he's that offended by the JW, he would ask the JW to leave, rather than leaving himself.

I think what he meant is that if a JW enters this guy's house, the guy is so good at debating that he'll end up converting the JW to an atheist.

Like was said, it would be helpful if Icehawk came back and clarified things.

The guy can't even remember where he wanted the 10 Commandments in the first place. Colbert starts talking about the bill to put them in the House and Senate and the idiot starts rambling about putting them in judicial buildings and courthouses.

As I recall, my mother the episcapol priest explained it as "The first five are God getting the details of worship out of the way so he can get to the more important second five."

The order always seemed a tad egotistical to me, though.

Even that doesn't make sense. Richard Dawkins in The God Delusion acknowledges that some people are just beyond approach to reason. They're too far gone.
