It's possible, but i believe that smaller weapons are more portable, yet offer nearly as great a range and stopping power, with significantly reduced recoil. Then again, this is coming from a guy who considers 100 yards to be long enough range and 7.62mm NATO to be plenty of power.Darkwyng wrote:I am aware of that. If at all possible to carry it, I would select the now M107 (formerly M82A1), or it's little brother, the M99 for sniping duty.

If I had my way, Id prolly drop the lightsaber (too much training involved), and instead get the chainsaw from Gears of War.Darkwyng wrote:If I was suddenly transported to the St universe via The Matrix, here's my equipment:

50cal might have better range, Stark.

What do you mean by "strange"?!Stark wrote:Anyone who wants to snipe PEOPLE with a .50cal is strange. 7.62 kills people very dead and goes through trees/walls: what more can you want?
Obviously, he intends to club Klingons over the head with the damn thing when he'll run out of ammo!
So, can we now legally hijack this thread and officially call it the "Equip Yourself for Trek" thread?
Cause with all the respect to Darkwyng, it's original purpose isn't very clear...

Sorry, I'm with Stark (the shock! the horror!)-against people 12.7x99 is overkill. And against Trek foes, what else is there to shoot at? The occasional shuttle or dune buggy? 7.62x51 should do fine.
as for a silenced SMG if you go MP5, go whole hog-MP5SD.
And don't hold your breath for any Trektard to show up.

I believe that the current record for sniping is call it 2500 meters, by a Canadian sniper with a .50BMG. However, this is a moot point when dealing with STs, in my opinion. They tend to attack using masses of people, wielding short-ranged weapons, and generally without any support aside from aerial and possibly orbital. So, if those two can be neutralized, then the ground assault could be turned back with WWI machine guns. Who needs snipers for that?Darkwyng wrote:Oh, and btw, the M107 has much better range than any 7.62 based rifle. The range of the M107 is about 1.8+ kilometers. LMAO, shuttle or dune buggy, nice. If there are any mods with the power to do so, could you change the name to weapons that could be used against ST?Batman wrote:Sorry, I'm with Stark (the shock! the horror!)-against people 12.7x99 is overkill. Sniping has it's own brand of sick, sadistic fun. If range is what you need, may I suggest this baby:Darkwyng wrote:Oh, and btw, the M107 has much better range than any 7.62 based rifle. The range of the M107 is about 1.8+ kilometers. (5905.1 ft. or 1968.5 yds. for my fellow Americans and those in the cheap seats)
CheyTak Intervention
Although the caliber (408 CheyTac) is only slightly smaller than the 12.7, it's actually intended to be used as an anti-INFANTRY and not anti-materials!
And as the article suggests, the 408 has greater muzzle velocity than the 12.7, and it goes well beyond 2 klicks.
Plus, it comes with a silencer, a stylish hard case and this nifty ballistic computer, because lets face it, none of use is a real sniper, and if we want to actually SNIPE, a ballistic computer is a must!

It sounds to me like you missed the point. Snipers, in my mind, are used for a few purposes: Eliminating officers/communications in the field, to disrupt the enemy's tactics; or disrupting morale by psychological warfare. The first is either unnecessary or impossible, as the commanders will be in orbit, everyone has a communicator badge, and any officers on the ground will most likely die the same as their men. The second, it seems to me, will be totally unnecessary; sniping makes people afraid to leave cover, walk point, or whatever, while this sort of wholesale slaughter would make people afraid to beam down. Snipers will not be necessary in a battle against ST forces.Darkwyng wrote:Sniping has it's own brand of sick, sadistic fun. I suppose the question to ask is, are we trying to equip a team of people, or are we going the "One Man Army" FPS route?
If it's the latter, try for the man-portable minigun of Predator fame (who cares if it's realistic? Neither is going up against Starfleet solo and expecting any real success beyond some dead red/goldshirts). If you're gonna Rambo it, do so with style.

Darkwyng, I think you'd be surprised at the effective range of a skilled marksman with an ordinary rifle. The big fancy .50cal pieces are really not necessary, especially when dealing with the "never fight at a range longer than you can throw a heavy object" Star Trek forces.

Ok, here's my pick of inventory:
For sniping I think I'll take the Heckler-Koch MSG-90.
Initially I wanted a G3 with a scope, but then I found this one- it really does look like a G3...
For an carbine I'll take theAN-94 "Abakan", because the Russians say it's like the AK-74 just better!

Hmmm, you have an excellent point there. And as far as the "One Man Army" FPS route, considering how badly Starfleet is set up, a minigun would be kinda cool.Darth Wong wrote:Darkwyng, I think you'd be surprised at the effective range of a skilled marksman with an ordinary rifle. Of course, I need an SMG!
I'll take the FN P90- nothing beats the 50 rounds magazine!
And the silenced FN Five-seveN, again, nothing beats the 20 rounds magazine!

If going for the heavy ones, why not to try the Mk.47 automated grenade launcher?Darkwyng wrote:Hmmm, you have an excellent point there. It wights only 41kg, including the tripod and the video sights, and it's pretty damn effective against a wall of charging brutes!

Well, it's IS a nice design overall, isn't it?
