Oblivion Expansion Announced

Post by Arrow »

Bethesda has announced a full-on expansion to Oblivion, called Shivering Isles, which takes place in another realm of Oblivion (that looks similar to Morrowind). Also, YouTube has an interview with some of the developers, showing off some of the new stuff. It's due out this spring, in stores for PC and download for Xbox 360.

Now lets see if I can get a second thread of mine thrown into HoS (ya'll remember what happened with the Oblivion Gone Gold thread I posted, right?).

Sheogorath's quest in Oblivion was neat. Golden Saints are neat. This looks neat. It would probably be just as fun to make as to play, since you can just throw in whatever crazy ideas you want that stick.

Optimism!

Looks cool, and Sheogorath is my favorite. Still, I would have preferred to see a new area of Tamriel itself explored.

That would take a whole new game, really.

I would love to see Akavir in a future game, but who knows about that.

Nope, Borderless Oblivion already lets you go over the mountains. And Death Mountain has already proven you can duck-tape new terrain onto the Oblivion world without much trouble. You just restrict transition between the two areas to a number of small passes out in formly remote cells and bam, a whole new area to explore. Morrowind reborn the mod hopes to do just that.

That's not what I'm talking about.

You would need to create all the hundreds of hours worth of high-quality content to fill up that province, the cost of which a mere expansion could not justify, and the time spent on doing so could also be spent on working on an even better graphics engine along with all the content.

I'd like to see a future game in the franchise have the whole continent be playable. I'm sure that would be do-able at some point, though they would probably have to downscale everything.

It's already downscaled and "compressed" too much for my liking, frankly. Oblivion's a little better about it in some respects than Morrowind, but I still find it irritating that the world is treated like a continent-sprawling empire when I can walk from one 25-citizen "city" to the next in a matter of minutes.

Yeah, when you really are just looking to get from point A to point B without any stops on the way you realize how small the world actually is, even though it's all packed with content. It's funny, because when I first heard about the fast-travel feature in Oblivion (as opposed to the vehicle/ rider based one in Morrowind) I was kind of annoyed, and swore I wouldn't use it so I could keep it "real". Yet I've found that using it to get around feels more realistic and I get to keep a sense of the world being so much larger than it really is.

Maybe a remake of Arena would be in order as that spanned the entire continent? :)
