48bit HDD support on XP

I received for christmas a 250 GB hard drive to put in my PC. Unfortunately it's showing up as a 131gb drive. My copy of XP is the original version how ever service pack 1 and 2 have been applied. Bios update has been done to enable 48bit HDD as well.

Stats for the system
Asus A7V MB with ata100 bios version 1011
seagate baracuda 250gb ata
768 mb ram
amd 1.1ghz processor
drive formated NTFS

The bios sees the hard drive as 250gb.

I've tried following this MS artical to make it work http://support.microsoft.com/kb/303013 but it didn't help.

I'm hoping that I can do this with out having to do a slipstream of sp2 onto my xp install disc (process of making a copy of my xp cdrom and applying sp2 in the process) as it means an entire reinstall of the system.

I'm loath to purchasing another copy of XP with SP2 already installed as well, seeing as I've paid for the software I shouldn't have to pay for an update too.

Anyone had any experiance with this?

131 seems like an odd number. I thought the limit was 137.

Are you sure you've got the correct registry entry in there?

You could try running this tool.

The limit is 128GB (or 131,072MB or 137,438,953,472B), depends on how the program shows it.

Edit (1-11-2007): After rechecking this thread to see if you had solved your problem I realized that my link was the same as the one in your initial post, my fault for not reading closely enough, I apologize and hope you're able to work out your issue, that's the only resource I know of.

I tried the slipstream method over the weekend, didn't work, next i'm going to try booting off a small drive into xp sp2 and formatting the drive that way.... if that doesn't work i'm going to suspect that the system board is the issue and look for a cheap MB/Ram/CPU replacement.

ok up date, i booted off my 10gb drive (same install of xp) and it sees it properly when i connect the large drive via usb.

i ran the tool listed above for fun and it says i pass and don't need the registry entry.... so at this point i'm contemplating that it's 1 of 2 things... the bios isn't properly set or my install is being silly.

i'm contemplating spending 200 on a bare bones pc and ram just to drop the drive into.

Try flashing the bios first. It tends to fix this sort of things and these days its hard to make a flash go wrong unintentionally and even if it does - you already are prepared to buy a new computer so it doesn't matter that much.
