It'll get you to a town substantially faster. The Nomad wrote:I chose west as well, but how long a journey would each choice entail? I might revise my judgment if the more dangerous one is not much faster.
The Excellent Prismatic Spray. For when you absolutely, positively must kill a motherfucker. Accept no substitutions. Contact a magician of the later Aeons for details. Some conditions may apply.

Unless the villagers are shapeshifters, mind controled, secretely worshiping dark powers, or in league with a demon or somesuch, we should be able to cut them to ribbons if they try anything. Of course, if they are doing any of the forementioned things, it could get very interesting indeed. Or it could be a completely average hamlet where we can do a little bit of character developementStormbringer wrote:I don't know but I'm just going to stand back and find out which. The Nomad wrote:I feel that if the peons don't try to kill us, they'll have a job for us

Quite probably so.
But I'm also trying to steer away from that sort of meta-gaming. As far as Auric is concerned it's a case of not agitating the locals. He's remembering home back in Skirov (we're in the border range between Kos and Skirov) and remembering the old hands that were a crack shot with a long gun or a bow; he's also hoping they're not being trained on the party with suspicion.
Not to mention the more primitive people's inherent distrust of the aracane, one of the reasons he left to join the Winter Guard. But that's backstory I have mostly in my head at this point.
PS: Excellent maps of the Iron Kingdoms: Here. We're just above the Khador label on the pdf map.

As far as metagaming goes, I don't really intend to make decisions based on the fact that I know in many games, peasants are seldem what they seem (I can't remember all the times there was a vampire or something in a little hamlet). I'm just used to bullshiting about such possibilities with the other players "around the table" as it were. I kind of thought thats what this thread has turned into .
My guy is really thinking that it is probably safe, if he can convince the farmers that he isn't dangerous. The reason he continues to do mercenary and inteligence work is because of the rush he gets off of such negotiations. When everything depends on if he can sell someone a bill of goods, or outwit someone, thats what he loves. This is despite the fact that he is quite cynical about the work he does, and usually finds it ultimately unfullfilling and without a soul.

What is Project Zohar?
Here's to a certain mostly harmless nutcase.

That's the trick with having watched or read too much fantasy: after that, you see the shadows of vampires, doppelgangers or diabolical cultists everywhere behind innocent peasant families.
And even if they aren't going to attempt to kill or capture us, there is still the possibility that they try to lure us in a trap with this troll hunt.
Or they could be a mere innocent hospitable family.
Psychological games are nasty, especially when you have read the GM's story titled "Necessary Acts" . I did not even prepare my Detect Thoughts spell .

Yeah, the pointless suspicion can certainly set in if you know your fantasy. Konrad's caution can be explained basically as a character trait because he's been doing intelligence operations for mercenaries for 20 years. Hell, I had him sit next to the wife because he thought she would make a good hostage if things got rough. Konrad doesn't really need to think about that kind of shit anymore; it's all second nature now.The Nomad wrote:That's the trick with having watched or read too much fantasy: after that, you see the shadows of vampires, doppelgangers or diabolical cultists everywhere behind innocent peasant families.

Skirov and Kos are both behind the times, and to some extent clannish and tribal. But it also means that things like the old customs of hospitality are still respected and practiced. Taking in travelers, particularly reputable enough ones like ourselves, would be a common enough practice. The Nomad wrote:That's the trick with having watched or read too much fantasy: after that, you see the shadows of vampires, doppelgangers or diabolical cultists everywhere behind innocent peasant families.

And while trolls aren't terribly common in the further North, they're not uncommon either. Further more, it's not like my character didn't ask.
Either way, in character, Auric's pretty confident he can handle things. He's done time in the Winter Guard, he's a trained arcane caster, and he's pretty good with a sword. There's not too much to be truly afraid of right now. It's more innate caution and wanting to make sure things go smoothly.
