Favorite war movie.

I would have to say my favorite is Brave Heart. I really enjoy anything medieval. Great soundtrack, great scenes, and I love the whole "fight for your freedom" thing. I also liked Blackhawk Down and We Were Soldiers. Enemy at the Gates and Wind Talkers weren't that bad either.

I like "Tora! Tora! Tora!" very much.
Full Metal Jacket comes to mind, as well...

I think that the best movie ever made (after Schindler's List, if that can be considered a war movie) was probably either "Tora, Tora, Tora," or "Blackhawk Down." My favorite one was "A Bridge Too Far."

The way I see it there are to kinds of war movies. The old school kind, war is heroic and noble. Men fight and die honorably (or not as the role indicates) and it's generally a bit more glamorous portrayal of war. Now there are the modern style movies. Gritty, usually gorey, and a lot more honest.

Old School War movies: Glory

Modern War movies: Full Metal Jacket

I'd have to go with one of two possiblities, either braveheart (even though its about as historically acurate in places as a pharoe with a digital watch...) as I am a somewhat fuzzy, sword wielding scotsman.....

Or the greatest war film of all time, ever....

Dr Strangelove.

As a few others have already mentioned, Patton, Platoon, and Glory are all great. Its a shame they massively edited Patton though. If it were a more honest look at him, the movie would have been much better. A lot less popular, perhaps, but I would have enjoyed it more.

Black Hawk Down, and also Enemy at the Gates despite the historical inaccuracy.

Full Metal Jacket was good...
The Band of Brothers series wasn't too bad either.

I like a lot of the ones that have already been mentioned a great deal.
The only one that I haven't seen mentioned that I like is Midway.

Band of Brothers was a bit preachy, especially the episodes that Spielberg directed.

One of the prime reasons I didn't have Saving Ryan's Privates on my list.

I can't say that I've seen too many war movies, however out of what I've seen Tora Tora Tora really hits home. Some of the ones since SPR are stellar in thier own rights though.

Damnit how could I have forgotten:

Bridge Over the River Kwai,
A Bridge Too Far,
and
Three Kings.

(all of which provided a level of inspiration for "A Crossover Too Far")
