rarely seen deep sea shark captured, died later

Post by Raesene »

A frilled shark was captured near Japan and brought to a marine park near Tokyo. A video and pictures were taken before it died.

I wonder what else lurks down there.

Awesome. I love it when they snag something that is that ancient.

This is why we need to fund deep sea exploration to a serious extent. If nothing else we'll find some awesome species.

I'm surprised the Japanese didn't try to eat it.

Well, they didn't say what they did with the carcass...

Sharks as a whole haven't changed much since ancient times, and it's not like this species itself was around tens of millions of years ago. This is why I dislike the term "fossil species".

On another note, as a deep sea creature, shouldn't it have exploded due to decompression on the way up here?

That's why it died. Plenty of deep-sea creatures have been brought up just fine, though, although they do die as the pressure changes; however, since they're essentially solid inside, they don't explode, just suffocate. It's like why we don't explode atop Mt. Everest...

Though, can I just say how uncool it is when you catch a deep sea fish, reel it in and end up with something that's swim bladder has hyperinflated, popping out the eyes, sometimes peeking through the gills, and is puffed out like a big of organic bubble gum from the mouth to be the same size as the fish...

Eew.

Now all we need to do is find megalodon. And then haul him up and have his bladder come out of his eyes.

It was found in shallow water. We can only guess that it came up slowly enough to decompress.

That'd be a neat trick. Sharks don't come equipped with swim bladders.

Dunno. But that's one of the things that differentiates sharks from normal fishes. Sharks got obscenely huge livers, as well as the cartilage for bones and all.

Frilled sharks appear regularly in the catches from bottom trawling, and when caught are used as food or for fishmeal

A friend who is know to embelish stories a bit told me yesterday that the Japanese caught a live adult Architeuthis, then killed and ate it. This must have been what he meant...

When i first heard the news they said a "fifty million year old shark", confusing way to say it. They corrected it after the ad break.

PS: My dad told me this funny story about a wooly mammoth preserved perfectly in the ice uncovered by some people, by the time the scientists got there it had been eaten by the people. LOL
