ships in hyperspace probably DO have to expend at least some fuel - they manuver, and they still need parrticle shielding to protect them from realspace collisions, so I imagine it would require the expenditure of at least SOME fuel in some manner (we just probably couldnt quantify it.) Which is probably why they have a max range at all.
