Piracy (don't worry)

Post by Robert Treder »

I'm not going to ask anybody to admit to anything, but I was just wondering why it is so many of you seem to be afraid of admitting to electronic piracy.

In all seriousness, I'd like to be clued in on the existance of any organizations which can prosecute someone based on their comments in a web-board. Does it violate Mike's TOS?
I know that I can walk up to a cop and tell him "I smoke pot all the damned time!" and he can't do jack shit about it. Why is it different on the internet?

Serious answers appreciated.
And you may ask yourself, 'Where does that highway go to?'

As a rule they go after distributors not users anyway.

People are hypocritical whores, thats why. I pirate, so what? I don't have the money to buy the shit so I'm not detracting from company profits. Oh, sure, some my say "If you can't pay for it then you cant have it" but those people also tend to say "God said so" quite frequently.

Carlin might say.. "Fuck you, cock sucker. I'll consider not pirating when you get between my legs and SUCK MY DICK"

I'm not going to say anything about piracy here for the same reason I'm not going to tell you about all the laws I may or may not have broken so far in my life. People don't need to know, and I don't want the info floating around on a message board where anyone can see it. In hindsight it would be far better if I just didn't post at all in that thread, but oh well.

So, basically, just as I expected, there's really no reason to fear claiming to be a pirate on a message board. Even if I were to divulge all of the specific acts of piracy that I've committed, nobody could do anything about it.
I've been looking around, and I can't find any reason why it would violate Mike's TOS on the board, either. If it does, please tell me.

It shouldn't violate Mike's Terms of Service as long as no one swaps pirating tips, like where to go and stuff like that.

Someone could decide to stir up shit and start getting into contact with as many people as they can so that they could make the board shut down because the people on the board are discussing doing illeagle things.

People has tried to do that to other boards (and post illeagle things like child porn) but I don't know if it was ever actually effective on any boards.

Here's the problem with that analogy. If you stand on the corner and tell people, "I take my neighbor's newspapers," the police might not be able to do anything, but the neighbor can press criminal charges for theft by taking or bring civil suit. Likewise, if I were to say that I have downloaded a few Gb's of music or movies (completely hypothetically, of course), I might not have much reason to fear the authorities (yet), but if the entertainment industry decides to get particularly nasty, they might be able to cause me some real problems. Even if it's a bit paranoid, I'd rather be safe than sorry.

More on Johonebesus' comments. Basically, if you run up to a police officer and inform him that you smoke marijuana, he cannot arrest you right then and there. True. You've broken no laws.

BUT

He could easily obtain a court order to keep you under surveillance. See the problem with people openly admitting that they pirate software?

The reason so many ppl use pirated software is for the same reason ppl use MP3's now. I refuse to buff up some fat capitalist bastards bank ballance. I do buy original games, PC games are reasonably priced considering the R'n'D going into creating some of these games. Play Dungeon Siege and tell me thats not worth £30.

business type software is another case. No way is windows worth the price they charge for it. They rule should be that home users get a discount but businesses pay full wack.

I can understand graphics programs and programming languages being expensive since they can be used to earn you money.

Also, I suggest everyone not do as much file sharing in college as they do outside college. I hear that colleges filter their traffic and look for those kinds of things. Expulsion can be nasty.
