they're releasing it for XBOX and PC? I hope they make a decent space simulator, and don't dumb it down for the Consoles.
but if they do, there's always the FS mod Beyond The Red Line.

I suppose I could be satisfied with a another spacefighter simulator.
Though what I really want is voice recognition software to advance. It'd involve a game where you are the CO of a battlestar and you assess the situation and give orders such as "Batteries Alpha through Echo, switch to salvoe fire. Target Baseship Charlie" and the like. *dreams on*

I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who constantly says: "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action"; who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by a mythical concept of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait for a "more convenient season."
You can get something like that with Enigma Rising Tide. Granted it is WW II and probably not as detailed as you want, but they claim you can play the game hands free. One nice thing is that you can bark navigational commands while manning a cannon or AA gun without leaving the station. To open fire on an enemy vessel, you can just look at it and speak the proper command. Plus few things are as fun as looking through the periscope, ordering bow tubes to fire, then screaming "Dive! Dive! Dive!" as a destroyer bears down on you. Some things still work better with the mouse/keyboard, but overall the voice works well.Soontir C'boath wrote:I suppose I could be satisfied with a another spacefighter simulator.

I just hope that the flight model is at least as realistic as Vendetta Online's. And that the storyline doesn't descend into the soap-operaish depths of the TV show.

You got a problem with Freespace?Admiral Valdemar wrote:Great. This'll be more FreeSpace and less I-War in all probability. Why can't they make decent space sims nowadays?
As I understand it, it's considered one of the better space sims.

And that ain't saying much. It was fun and all, but to compare it to real legends like I-War, Elite or TIE Fighter is just wrong. It's like everyone tried to cop FS after its success and led to zero innovation. If I wanted to fly like a plane and fire pew-pew lasers, I'd boot-up any one of the WC games.Darksider wrote:

Sierra huh? I remember the last space sim I wanted based on a popular sci-fi T.V. show. What did Sierra do, cancel it half way through production. Gaming wise I don't see Battlestar Galactica having that much potiential just due to the lack of ship designs and the plot. (The colonial fleet most likely does not have an R&D team building new Fighters and weapons.)

Well, from reading the description, it looks like we're just going to be flying in sorties we've seen during the show; Escape from Ragnar, Take the Tylium Asteroid, Resurrection Ship etc.Sam Or I wrote:Sierra huh? Comparatively, yes. You had at least 2 fighter designs per race, while in nBSG you have 6 total (2 Vipers, Raptor, 2 Raiders and the Blackbird). And for B5, you could extend that into even more with subclasses, something that has a cannonical basis even if it isn't explicitly forced on you (both Starfuries and Omegas were shown with different subclasses on the show) while nBSG seems to be very rigid about their classes excepting the Raptors.Uraniun235 wrote:yeah because b5 had so many different fighter designs

It's not wrong at all. Freespace 2 was the epitome of the X-Wing style space sim. TIE Fighter was a fantastic game, and so were many others, but people don't keep going back to Freespace 2 more than any other space sim for no reason. And I don't know why you mean by "everyone tried to copy FS". As far as I know, FS2 was the last of its kind. I'm not aware that anyone ever made another X-Wing style space sim again, copy of Freespace or otherwise. Discounting mods, of course.Admiral Valdemar wrote:And that ain't saying much. I enjoyed "Colony Wars" for a simple console space sim. It had Newtonian physics, unique fighters, and some nifty weapon effects. If they went that route, with a similar engine, polished it up a bit, I think a nBSG game wouldn't be half bad.

I only played Colony Wars briefly, but it was a bit of fun. I don't think it'd satisfy the hardcore nBSG fans though.NeoGoomba wrote:I enjoyed "Colony Wars" for a simple console space sim. Freespace 2 had way more depth than TIE Fighter, in my opinion. It had a greater sense of scale, actual capital ship battles (and, unlike in TIE Fighter, your chances of killing a capital ship all by yourself were low, given their accurate beam armament), a great plot, atmosphere- it was all there.
It's true that Freespace 2 gets credit as being the last great war-in-space fighter sim (I-War 2 was more along Privateer lines)- but that credit is not undeserved.

If it's supposed to be both console and PC, I'd expect something more along the lines of Rouge Squadron than Freespace. You can't do a decent sim of anything with the controls a console gives you, even without dumbing the features down. My brother picked up Mechwarrior 2 for the PS2 (maybe, my memory's a little fuzzy), and looking at the amount of material they cut out of that game to transform into it into a console title gives me little hope for this one.

Flight sims should be left with the PC and the joystick anyway. Fuck the console on this one and I hope the developer sees that way too.Thag wrote:If it's supposed to be both console and PC, I'd expect something more along the lines of Rouge Squadron than Freespace. I only remember one class of fighter for the Minbari, Centauri, Narn, and Vorlons. Then there was the generic "Raider" fighter, and the two Starfury designs. Oh wow, seven versus six. I'm really not even seeing the big gameplay difference that would be had between a Starfury/Nial duel and a Nial/[Narn fighter] duel.mmar wrote:Comparatively, yes. If the producers aim for a smaller game, then a smaller number of fighters won't be any problem at all. Not every game has to be a huge production with millions of dollars thrown at it.

Psygnosis should be reformed and made to bring out a similar game engine for this then. My screen name is inspired by the third and final game Colony Wars: Red Sun, and I only ever played demos of the first two. The second of which was fucking impossible to do.Stark wrote:I only played Colony Wars briefly, but it was a bit of fun.
