Did Luke Force Push Vader?

Post by NeoGoomba »

I just caught this on HBO. In ESB, in the early stage of their duel, it seems that Luke fleetingly gains the upper hand on Vader when he knocks him off the carbon freezing chamber. When Vader goes off, he flies backward at an angle while yelling an "Ooomph", as if he was knocked off with pretty decent force. Does the novelisation or anything else say if Luke used the Force to slam Vader off the platform, or did he just kick/shove Vader off?
"A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky, dangerous animals and you know it. Fifteen hundred years ago everybody knew the Earth was the center of the universe. Five hundred years ago, everybody knew the Earth was flat, and fifteen minutes ago, you knew that humans were alone on this planet. Imagine what you'll know...tomorrow."

if memory serves, he gave Vader a huge boot to the chest at that point.

Vader was backpedalling and "appeared" to lose his balance and fall. This drew Luke down to the lower level, where he proceeded to get his ass kicked, literally out the window

Out-of-universe explanation, George hadn't thought of that sort of Jedi/Sith combat ability just yet :)

im sure the ability was there (Dagobah training happens before the Luke/Vader Round 1 fight) but i think that it was thought that two people using the force would cancel that out at the time

and with that i have become the next step in my www.stardestroyer.net training and become......i hope this thread has an edit.......:) ......... Jedi Master
i liked that joke so its staying in there

In-universe, I'm certain it was, we just didnt see it until the prequels :)

As to cancelling, I'm not 100% sure but that might be a matter of concentration and focus. We saw Dooku tossing Obi-Wan around more than once, not to mention Maul pushing his ass off the edge of the melting pit. Obi-wan and Anakin DID blow each other to opposite ends of the room during the final duel, so that would sorta qualify as "canceling out"

Vader gave Luke a Force nudge into the carbon freezing pit, so the ability definitely existed in TESB.

From the scene, it looked like Vader (who had been backing him up at saberpoint) just took a swing at him and Luke lost his balance and fell into the pit. Vader then used the Force to activate the chamber, and Luke used it to leap out in time :)

I haven't seen this in a long time, but I could swear Luke side-kicks Vader in the chest to knock him over that edge.

Isn't that scene in Jedi? Where they dueling before the Emperor and Luke finishes a block then side-kicks Vader who awkwardly tumbles end over end down the stairs to land on his ass?

Considering how far Darth Vader goes when Luke kicks him, I wouldn't be surprised if there was a Force nudge involved. After all, considering how heavy Darth Vader's armor is, I really don't think it's possible for a simple kick to do that.

At first I thought he Force pushed him too, but after reviewing the scene, it seems much more likely that Vader just fell off of the edge. In the few seconds leading to that fall, Luke was on the attack and Vader was giving ground quickly. That momentum seems to carry into the fall. This is even more likely a scenario if Vader was concentrated solely on Luke's attacks and the blocking and misdirecting of his lunges. Remember, Vader didn't want to kill Luke and it takes more concentration to avoid damage than it does to cause it.

Maybe I'm thinking of the wrong scene, but I thought that Luke shoved a venting pipe at Vader and startled him, causing him to backpedal and fall.

Later in that scene, the vent move occurs about three minutes before our discussed topic.

Yes, he does. Except he does it in ROTJ, and not ESB. *I think the only hit Luke actually lands on Vader is the lightsaber hit to the right shoulder.
