Virtual Tabletop

Image

Here a player uses arrows and the tape measure to determine how far the enemy is. Models shown are representations of models by Games Workshop.

Virtual Tabletop is a 3d environment that can be used to play tabletop miniature war games across the internet! Nearly any game can be recreated with the easy to use tools and editable properties. This is not a game system itself, you will still need a game system to play. This product is in development.
Features
Easy to create landscapes using FlexMap.
Click-to-place terrain.
Simple to set up new game systems.
More information coming!

Interesting concept, but GW are quite trigger happy usually, so yeah, so long and thanks for all the fish...

If they were smart, they would pull the GW based images and use some generic or WW2 models. Most likely GW will scream IP infringement, then they'll pull the models and continue on with their program.

if the models are easy to import, they should go generic and allow users to create and bring their own models in. It would really, really keep them safe and increase their user base.

Yeah, simply having the model format open and a forum full of 40k models would be much, much smarter than basically saying 'yo come sue us'.

On the other hand, this is the sort of miniatures game we've all wanted. :)

Good idea, and they've basically done one of the dumber things.

Why didn't they just use generic WW2 models, most know what this program will be used for, but blantantly going "See WH40K games!!!" is just painting the bull's eye on your ass and asking them to go deep.

The 40k models are placeholders, the game won't ship with them, but with a generic set of 3d models....but like GR said, using 40K stuff in their promos is just asking for trouble

I predict at least one crippling aneurysm over at Games Workshop over this development.

They've deliberately made suck games out of their system for years: eventually, they must have known someone would just make their own.

You gotta remember, the miniatures and rulebooks are extremely expensive for the customer and a real cash cow for the GW. The company has to be very careful about any material it releases that's related to their main product. The material has to promote the tabletop game, not compete against it, because this would be akin to deliberately crippling their cash cow.

That is the reason why Dawn of War is in the end just another generic RTS, with base building and troop rushes. It has none of the table-top game's tactical depth because then people would start preferring the cheaper PC game.

Err... no shit? We all know why they do it. Doesn't mean they should be surprised someone else just made one themselves.

Seems interesting. I wonder how it works with multiple people. If it has models for different settings, it might be useful for PnP RPGing, in addition to wargaming.

And because previous attempts to make a straight up 40k video game had fallen flat on their face.

It isn't finished yet. You can only download the map-making utility as of yet.
