ST Uniform poll.
So, what Uniforms from ST are your favorite? Favorite Duty uniform, dress uniform, or slightly formal uniform?
As for myself, I rather like the Insurrection and Nemesis Dress uniforms. For slightly formal the TOS movie era uniform is good. For duty uniforms the FC-N and late DS9 uniform was quite good.

I liked the TOS movie-era uniforms except for the bell-bottomed pants in ST2.
For female crewers, I liked the 1960's TOS uniforms

Ok, so most everyone likes the new white dress uniforms and everyone likes the TOS movie uniforms as quasi dress. What do you think would make a good duty uniform? You want something rather simple, kinda like army and marine BDUs or Navy "drabs" which get the job done.

I guess for duty uniform may something like the jumpsuits from "Boobyprise." They're simple and functional.Alyeska wrote:Ok, so most everyone likes the new white dress uniforms and everyone likes the TOS movie uniforms as quasi dress. I don't particularly care for any of the Star Trek uniforms.
The diner formal dress uniforms in the last two TNG movies are pretty good.
I like the informal version of the TOS movies especially the dark colored shirt without the main uniform shirt. The jackets in TWOK were pretty good too. They actually looked decent and usuable.
If we get away from looks I think the few variations we've seen of the uniforms on Enterprise are the most practical and useful.
The absolute worst ones were some of the crew uniforms in ST:TMP. Although, I really liked a couple of Kirk's Admiral's uniforms.

Favorite Styles
Okay, here are my own personal favorites:
Duty uniforms: Late TNG/early DS9 with the two options: black on colour or colour on black.
Dress uniforms: TNG - Basically the normal duty uniforms turned into constricting dress uniforms by way of replacing the tunic with a stuffy jacket.
Off-duty: Well, I do like the cultural-specific wear at Betazoid weddings. Seriously, though, I like the off-duty clothes in the VOY/movie era. I think that the TNG/DS9 off-duty clothes went too far in trying to find a 'non-culture-specific' style. At least in Voyager, they were allowed to dress in clothes that looked casual without looking neo-peasant.

The TOS series uniforms: functional, comfortable, and more accurately reflective of the services they represented. The idea was to depict a shirtsleeve environment for space travel while maintaining a degree of realism insofar as depicting Starfleet as a functioning military service.
Some thought went into the designs here, with the uniform colours symbolising the different branches of the contemporary military services. The pale ivy represented the land forces, the light cobalt blue the sea and air forces, and the orange (yes they were orange-shirts, not red) were similar to the colour for NASA flightsuits which were rejected in the 60s but were subsequently adopted for present-day service in the space agency.
In the two TOS pilots, recall, one uniform colour was khaki, which more definitively symbolised the navy/marine branch.
I also preferred the designing of specific unit insignia for each starship; reflecting unit pride and esprit-de-corps among starship crews.
Despite the "virtues" of the female uniforms of the regular TOS series, the ones from the pilots were the more practical. As were the expedition jackets featured in "The Cage".
The TOS movie uniforms from TWOK onward were more military and more practical than the goofy leisure-suit uniforms from TMP, but fail in terms of comfort and functionality, as well as making for a very high-visiblity target —an issue partially addressed by TFF with the khaki commando-sweater uniforms for ground-assault operations.
The TNG-era uniforms are simply fashion statements and little more.

Well I guess I have to disagree with the majority here. I think the TNG movie dress uniforms are absolutely pathetic. They look like they belong on the Love Boat. On that note, I really don’t recall seeing any dress uniforms in ST that I liked (especially not the “dresses” from the TNG series).
For duty uniforms I have to pick the gray/black from the TNG movies. The red TOS movie uniforms come in a close second.

instead of jumping on the bandwagon, i'll nominate my pick for the worst uniforms: the ones from The Motion Picture. god they were awful. Grey disco-fabulous jumpsuits with the buckle from batman's utility belt stuck right above the crotch. bleechhh!
