I actually really enjoyed the writing for SMAC. The nations didn't seem like black & white good/evil nonsense: each leader actually had an agenda and priorities, and the other leaders would attack them based on those beliefs. I usually play as Hive or Gaia, and the mean things the others say about Dierdre and Yang are refreshingly on the money, instead of tired 'I will rule you rahhh'. I especially liked the mean things people said about the toadying, influence-peddling Peacekeepers. How dare you try to complete our original mission, FOOLS!

My awesomeness seems to have a geometric effect on the political borders of Planet.

Also, that game not only had excellent quotes, but awesome smack-talk.

"Your rocks and trees won't save you now, Deirdre!"

"What will you do, declare 'sanctions'? Hahahahaha!"

And the faction-destruction vid was awesome.

I love the terraforming aspect. I didn't even go to war (that shit just bores me) but I loved planting cities and then building roads in between them. Then building all the other shit.

Who played on the 'Huge Map of Planet' or did you go for the random settings?

I liked terraforming too, especially in an offensive capability to turn your opponents lands to desert or ocean. Want to stick fungus on the borders of thy enemy. Use these handy seed packets.

Also the vehicle construction screen which allowed you to build your army engineers. That was a real step up from the totally slow, defensless dudes in civ. You want speedy and armoured terraformers? Then just build em that way! You want worm hunting rovers, guys with SAMs, cop cars that can also deal with worms and a MASH that doubles as anti-air battery. I've got your designs right here sir.

I like to build things that most 'hardcore' players don't, like bunkers, air pads and so on. I mean, it's a role playing experience for me as well as a strategy and civ-simulation game.

I think i might dig it out and dust it off again.
Someone suggest a faction for me, i almost always go Morgan or the University so something new.

And one of my favourite parts of the game was tweaking the social options to get the best mix.

In bog-standard SMAC, I prefer to play University, though I managed some good games with the Hive. In the expansion, I fell in love with the pirates. So very nice, especially on a huge sea map.
And my absolute favourite part are the HUGE bombs. I like redecorating the map... :)

When I play, the Spartans aren't shy about the weapons of mass destruction. I spray nerve gas like it's candy and I TBO'd the Hive with planet busters before TBOing was cool.

What did the other factions think about that?

Too bad I repealed those years ago with the consent of everyone. Also too bad that you're one of two factions still uncratered, and I'm one of them.

I don't know what they think, but they say is "O merciful one, please don't destroy us! We'll do what you say and give you whatever you want!"

I really liked that when you got a pact/loyalty from someone, you could base troops in their cities. That seemed cool. All this talk is making me want to reinstall SMAC and get SMAX.

I play largely as the Spartans, because of their ass-kicking ways and relative lack of weakness. Plus, I dig Santiago.

Has anyone noticed that the Huge Map of Planet is almost too big for 7 players? It becomes stupidly easy evwen on the hard difficulties, because there is noone close enough to you to slow your early growth.o

I always liked to play as the Hive and pretend that I was a Cobra Commander-esque cartoon villian. You get to treat your underlings and worthless peons, and spend billions on worthless gadgets. Wheee!
