Get the fuck over it. You actually expected the writers to not reveal Chief and Cally's problems after that bar scene in a previous episode?
Yes, I expected the writers to focus on something related to the main plot, like Baltar, the search for Earth, the toasters, etc, not this soapy "ooh my marriage sucks" bullshit. Although, I was wrong, it was mostly an Adama ep, which isn't bad.

Good episode, I give it a solid four. Considering the last three or so episodes were 'meh' for me, this is a refreshing change.
I didn't like the over done airlock escape though. Enviromental suits (as previously mentioned) or for fucks sake we know a Raptor can dock and seal on a hull for insertion operations. Should have had a Raptor dock with the damn thing to save em at the end.
Flash backs got annoying too. Same 'I don't know her so really don't care' feelings I got last season with Lee's flashback girlfriend.

They mentioned those, and apparently however long it would have taken for them to make the seal would have been too long for them.

I mean, since the doors still open and close perfectly well and in fact function as they were supposed to with the in room barometer, you'd think that the door mechanism wasn't damaged at all. Yet everything about it worked except for the only means to open it in an emergency. Hmmmm...

I liked this episode alot. Something felt very special about it. It was not life or death of the entire fleet and humanity holds in the balance, I think this was a more personal episode. I give it a 4.5. Maybe it was the strong acting in this episode that gave it that extra .5 for me. This was a good day in the life of an average day aboard Galactica, and it showed great attention to detail. The whole rash part and Helo moves away from the guy, Adama repeating the name of crew members, Starbuck insulting Lees "recycled" speech, Chiefs and Callys relationship seemed real, the tapping the formula on the Chiefs wrist, The low energy level when working showing that it was a routine job and the slow building of energy when it became more and more dangerous.. The plot of this episode may have been filler quality, but the directing and acting were top notch.
I gave the Episode a 3. I liked the Adama plot, but thought the Cally/Tyrol plot stunk to much of a StarTrek style Contrived Disaster to be worth anything. I mean, come on, there is a pin hole leak in an airlock and it just so happened that the characters in there that were supposed to repair the airlock had no personal protection equipment that would make that survivable, no equipment handy for patching pinhole leaks, and it just so happens that the only thing that is wrong with the damn door mechanism is that the manual override of the door is busted (and they can't override it electronically even though the electronics of the door were still clearly functioning for it to close in the first place). All of that so they could make Lee clever by lifting a scene from "2001: A Space Odyssey".

Finally, they are reminding us we are on board a space ship again!
no Lee/starbuck angst, (Albeit replaced by Tyrol/Cally angst, but still better,)
and some Adama stuff.
the little details made the episode good.
(the 2 breathing masks that worked so Tyrol and Cally didn't have to do that "Pass the mask between them cliched space bit" )
and Helo scootching away from Hot Dog

Mind though, that Tyrol and Cally's angst was due to real issues concerning their son and circumstances beyond their control, rather everything being because of their own damn fault like Lee and Kara...

They mentioned those, and apparently however long it would have taken for them to make the seal would have been too long for them.
Didn't have to do anything more than land on the hole to seal it enough to open the damn internal doors though, didn't they? Yeah, rigging a collar would take to long (a problem in the continuity if you ask me) but all they had to do is seal the damn thing.
On that note, why didn't some one space walk it from the airlock over and seal it? Or a worker hop a ride on a Raptor to seal it? Blowing it and catching them with a spaceship is a little over the top.

I'd think that if the Raptor had the capacity to dock at all, given the nature of the vehicle, it would have the capacity to do it in a hurry so that the they could disgorge or load up in an less friendly situation without a bunch of techs having to do a time consuming EVA in order to make a collar.

I gave this one a four because it's actually a 3.5 episode and I round up when that happens.
The Good:
Adama's a badass, but distant commander. We get insight as to why he's so distant, another window into the sort of doubts he has, and we see the price he paid to get to where he is. Sure, it's a character development episode, but Olmos is the acting God of nBSG, so it's character development we can care about.
Adama and Roslin feeling out their budding romance is also very nice. Will Adama learn to let his wall down? Will Adama ever dock his Battlestar in Roslin's Presidential suite? I don't know, but it sure beats Battlestar Livejournal.
nBSG gets bonus points for not having people instantaneously die from explosive decompression. They also get bonus points for the hyperbaric chamber. But not as many as they would've if Tyrol would've had to spend time in one as well. And they get kudos for the air masks.
I suppose Adama's decision to blow the bay doors barely fits into the Good category, given the circumstances he had to work with. If they'd gradually decompressed the bay and opened the airlock doors, Cally and Tyrol would've passed out some nine to twelve seconds after the pressure dropped down to vacuum and their air ran out.
The Bad:
I suppose they have a pressure suit shortage. Or at least an emergency helmet shortage. Perhaps those overalls are designed to provide enough compression to allow function in low atmosphere environments, and retard the onset of decompression sickness in the event of explosive decompression. At least, that's how I'd design suits like that, and it may explain why Tyrol needed less time in the hyperbaric chamber than Cally did.
Also, they didn't have anything to produce smoke (to find leaks with) or maybe a can of quick-hardening foam, or resin? If you're going into a compartment that has previously been compromised . . . you'd think at least one of them would carry a spare patch.
I also suppose that if you're to have a blast door mechanism give out, it's better to design it so that it fails in the safe, closed position.
The bay they were in looks like a cargo bay, requiring a special collar. One that might be carried on a big cargo shuttle, like the oBSG ones flying around the fleet in CGI shots. Maybe it would've taken too long to secure one, but given where most of the fleet's supply of water and processed algae comes from . . . it's a bit contrived for them not to have a large cargo shuttle nearby.
Why are all the main pilot characters packed into a Raptor?
The Ugly:
The girl who plays Cally. Something about the way she whines does much to reduce the amount of sympathy I feel for both Cally and Tyrol in this episode. She needs to learn how, when acting in a scene like this, how to not whine like a petulant child.
Gil Hamilton wrote:
What gets me is that it actually only costs like a few bucks to buy a pair of work gloves and safety goggles. They could easily afford to buy a few dozen for use as props in the show.
...why? I didn't see them doing any welding. You know, most engineering work doesn't involve goggles and gloves, right?
"The rifle itself has no moral stature, since it has no will of its own. Naturally, it may be used by evil men for evil purposes, but there are more good men than evil, and while the latter cannot be persuaded to the path of righteousness by propaganda, they can certainly be corrected by good men with rifles."
A solid 4 or 4.5 for this episode. Good scifi needs good character episodes like this from time to time, and this one was pretty well done.
I disagree with Utsanomiko about the split focus of the plot. Any of these plots by themselves wouldn't have been enough to carry the episode without the pacing stalling down (or feeling dragged out, in the case of the airlock subplot). There were a couple of spots where I thought it was a bit oddly edited cutting between the two, where we have a fairly quiet scene with Adama and then jump to the noise and danger of the airlock without any real transition, but it was only once that I felt it was even a little jarring.
The method of escape from the airlock was mildly cheesy, but I was already spoiled on the resolution from last week's preview (grr!), so I didn't mind too much. The setup was a slightly contrived, as we know they do use pressure suits when appropriate (ex. Ep 1:02 Water). Something I would have liked to have seen was to have the characters be a little more casual about the problem in the beginning, to give us a reason why they were so casual about safety equipment in the first place. "It's got to be the sensor... the deck was sealed." Something like that.
There was some gorgeous CGI work with the Raptor close up along the hull of the Galactica as it was moving into position, and the shot where Chief/Cally shoot out towards the raptor was nicely done.
My only complaint was I thought some of the scenes with Adama and his ex-wife were weirdly written (although as usual EJO's acting was great). Maybe it would have worked better if they were more like flashbacks than current conversations... I can't put my finger on it.
Lonestar wrote:...why? I didn't see them doing any welding. You know, most engineering work doesn't involve goggles and gloves, right?
You don't wear safety goggles or work gloves when you are doing repairs on the guts of something, particularly in an area where there is damage and thus the strong possibility of jagged bits and particulate matter? Hell, I'm pretty sure they were doing damage repairs on the electrical system in that airlock, as that was the first thing Chief Tyrol asked the lady to get.

Meh. It's another character building episode with pointless scare tactic.
It moved none of the main and is building up yet more of the whole "Baltar: TRIAL OF THE MILLENIA!!!!!!!!" It better fucking be, given the past two episodes.
And Gil's right, they went the ST route of safety and that's never a good sign. And calling it budgetary restrictions is bullshit given the shit is less then $100 for everyone.

It was a meh show. Favorite characters getting mad, then making up when in mortal danger.......sounds like a soap opera.....
Stupid things happening to a spaceship that shouldn't (it's like making a car explode when we know it shouldn't)......It's beginning to sound like Trek.....
Okay, who's incharge of the checkbook around there! Someone's getting hired that got kicked off a trek show at some point!
They are really pushing the Baltar trial. I'm wondering how many watchers they are going to lose because they are fed up with the wait and having to watch the crappy Soaps.
Outside of that, I saw a red Swasticka on a flag with a blue field. The red was outlined in white. I figured this was a flag of one of the Colonies, but I couldn't find a picture or reference to it on Wikipedia. I imagine I saw it in other ceremonies in other episodes but never picked up on it. This was when Adama first saw Roslin at that U shaped table.
Does anyone know which colony that flag represents? Even if I am wrong on the shape of the symbol, I'd still like to know. Or is there a website that the Colony flags for nBSG
"All Suspects are guilty, period. Otherwise, they wouldn't be suspects, would they."
I got the impression that that the work they were going to be doing didn't require pressure suits. And before the situation became dire they were annoyed that the repair crew had done a sloppy job at patching up the place.
But yeah, the "manual override is damaged" was pretty bad.
Great insight into Adama, and I liked the father/son moments between him and Lee.
