Wii sales slipping?

Post by The Kernel »

Computer and Video Games wrote: Despite it still being completely sold out in the US and UK, Wii sales are showing signs of slowing in Japan as players settle into Nintendo's new generation...

The initial hype generated by Nintendo's motion-controlled console was phenomenal. Forums erupted with Wii speculation, rumour and excitement, Gav was even live on Channel 5 News. Amazon.co.uk was completely overwhelmed when its entire pre-order allocation was sold within just seven minutes, and Wii's were flogged on eBay for as much as £900 - FIVE times the retail price.

Advertisement:
It was an exciting launch for sure, but one that Wii critics have claimed is a temporary phase. Opposition to the controller's motion-control concept cite it as a gimmick whose appeal would soon diminish. Are we already seeing this happen in Japan?

There are a number of reasons why gamers' interest in Wii could be waning. Most prominent is the first batch of games, many of which do a better job at exposing the obstacles of full motion control, rather than the benefits.

Red Steel is twitchy and occassionaly clumsy, Need For Speed: Most Wanted is near unplayable, Far Cry got it all wrong, and the motion control in Marvel: Ultimate Alliance just feels tacked on.

The LAST thing Wii needs is lazy ports of existing games, particularly games that have been out for A YEAR or thereabouts on other consoles (Prince of Persia, Blazing Angels). They could do more harm than good.

But if Wii is approaching a lull, it'll be a temporary one. Regular CVG forum poster, Mr Vengeance, commented: "The Wii needs some new software fast - I'm a very frustrated Wii owner right now. I need some games!" signalling the games drought to be the main concern right now.

Patience, gamers. Nintendo models Wii on the similarly-innovative DS, and look at how that went. The touch-screen console had a strong launch, followed by a slow period. It seemed PSP was going to steal Nintendo's handheld crown. It took a year for the DS' killer apps - New Super Mario Bros., Animal Crossing: Wild World, Metroid Prime Hunters, Nintendogs and Brain Training - to excel it to its current record-breaking status.

Wii has had a good start. Elebits, Wii Sports and Wario Ware: Smooth Moves are great games but, more importantly, they're blueprints for what's possible on Wii and how well motion-controlled gaming works when done properly.

Now it's all about waiting for the Wii's big guns, as CVG reader maugrim2712 points out: "The Wii will slow down for a while soon, but once games like Metroid and Mario come out it'll shoot up again."

Super Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3: Corruption and Nintendo big-shot Super Smash Bros. Brawl are all due for release later this year and are bound to reignite the passion in owners as well as pull in new ones. And those are the games we know about; Nintendo is bound to have plenty of surprises in store...

Don't go forgetting about the constant stream of retro classics Nintendo continues to release via Virtual Console every week. We've finished Zelda, Excite Truck, Monkey Ball and all of Wii's bigger titles, yet the Virtual Console updates keep us turning on Wii every week, and every lunchtime for Mario Kart 64 sessions, which is still an awesome multiplayer game.

We should also consider that many third party developers, CVG has been told on different occasions, didn't receive proper Wii development kits too long before the console's release. With the average game taking well over a year to make these days, we should see an influx of third-party releases - developed specifically on Wii dev kits (not GameCube placeholders) - rushing to Wii later this year and in 2008.

Wii is not a temporary craze. Industry analysts, retailers and developers alike have backed Wii to have a healthy run in the new-generation console war.

Next Christmas is crucial for Wii. It'll have great titles and will be the cheapest console on the market. This will be when Wii will truly prove its worth. Head to the forum and tell us what you're looking forward to playing on Wii this year.
From Here

I'm not sure if this represents a trend or not, but it looks like the initial infatuation with the controller is starting to wear off. This article highlights one of the biggest problems with the Wii that many of use were worried about as soon as we heard about the controller: ports simply do not work very well unless they are drastically redesigned to take advantage of the new control scheme.

Now Nintendo is certainly in the best position to conquer this hurdle (they have the best first party titles), but it's still going to be rough, and slipping sales of the Wii just as it seemed to be hitting its stride is not a good thing. More time is needed to see how the US and the UK react, but I can imagine that once people get over the novelty of the Wii controller, the Wii will look like a much less attractive proposition.

Of course nothing will really be known until next Xmas. That's when we'll really see which next gen console rules in each respective market.

What a fucking shock...

The real reason for the Wii not selling - NO FUCKING GAMES FOR IT!

ITS INFURIATING HOW FEW FUCKING GAMES THERE ARE FOR THE WII!

And I know that there are plenty of "MINI-GAMES" games, but there are hardly ANY actual games which are not shitty ports with terrible controls and worse graphics.

And all the big headline titles, like Super Smash Brothers Brawl etc have been pushed back to "When they are done!"

No wonder people are not fucking ENTHUSED about it anymore.

The main reason I've not bought a Wii - Nintendo's usual failure to get enough games on their home consoles.

There's another big reason it's not selling as well as before. Namely...Nintendo stocked up on units before the release, and since that backstock ran out, just hasn't been able to pump out enough units to meet demand.

I hope they get a decent games library up and running.

[sarcasm]I didn't see that one coming.[/sarcasm]

This is the kind of substandard shit I had in mind when I called the Wiimote a gimmick. If this becomes the norm, then I'd have been proven right.

Reminds me of the DS's launch - only WarioWare Touched made any real use of the touch screen, while the rest of the launch lineup was made up from ported GBA and N64 games with touch-screen gimmicks bolted on.

While I don't see the Wii crashing violently and turning into a new Dreamcast, Nintendo had better get more than a bunch of previous-gen games with poorly-implemented Wiimote controls on the console, otherwise this generation will probably be Microsoft's for the taking.

All I know is I can't find one in the stores to buy and it's about to the point where that is beginning to piss me off.

I know that demand is high and all, but does it really take that long to crank up production to meet it?

How is Call of Duty 3 on the Wii? CoD 2 was enjoyable on the PC (mindless action can be fun :D ), how do the controls work for a simple shooter like CoD3?

Supposedly it's the best of the bunch for FPS games released so far, but the controls aren't quite right (no bounding box) and they chopped off the multiplayer.

Give it a few more weeks. The DS Lite was in a similar state less than a month ago, then suddenly everywhere in town had them. Unless of course you live in the middle of bumblefuck nowhere. . .then you're screwed.

So when did this count as anything except "Wii needs to put out more games.". Wow, the revelation that for a system to survive it needs product. Even more so that first generation PORTS have a tendancy not to utilize the systems strengths at all.

Yes, the Wii is going to suffer until it gets a library and even then it may not reach the lofty heights Nintendo once held. So does the article tell me the Earth revolves around the Sun?

No, but the article does end on a positive note suggesting that it's not going away anytime soon for those of us that bothered to read the entire thing. :D

It does make sense that once the initial craze of any console system dies down a bit sales are going to fall slightly. Hardly a doom and gloom scenario.

I honestly cannot remember a Nintendo launch where this didn't happen. In a month or two development is going to catch up, like it always does.

And sales slipping after the launch rush? Say it ain't so!

was the case pretty much everywhere be it a dedicated videogame shop like here or a more generalist shop like Toy'r'us or Tatsuya
(the wii was in the same case of course)
DS was sold out because well it's the DS,
i think the PSP was sold out because of Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops and the annoncement of Monster Hunter freedom 2

A video game console's games are lacking in quantity and quality shortly after release? Go on. :P

I'd personally like to hear of a single console that didn't suffer a small slip in sales shortly after the initial launch fervor died down.

It's not Nintendo, it's standard launch blues. The Wii at least has more games than the PS3.

Good game, but they stripped out the multiplayer because they were rushing it for launch.

You know, I'm kind of hoping that the Wii craze loses some steam here in the US. Maybe then I can actually get one.

And the Splinter Cell port is totally ass. Which is so frustrating--there was no need for them to just shit on it like they did. Twilight Princess has lovely graphics, nice smooth, crisp worlds, and yet Splinter Cell looks like it was designed for the PSOne. Are they moronic, or just supremely lazy? And they turn the Wiimote into a chore... ugh. Anyway...

I've got a Wii, and the wiimote is a crapload of fun. Once people start utilizing it for games the same way that Wiisports and Wii Play and Zelda showed us was possible, the Wii will be way better off. It's not a gimmick! What's a gimmick is a company porting over something like Splinter Cell to the Wii with graphics that are horribly below par and have the most ass-backwards un-customizable control scheme ever.

Like, a retarded monkey could have thought up better controls. The Wiimote is really not that hard to write for, if people had something inside their skulls. I generally don't like FPS's on consoles anyway, so I'm happy with the functionality the Wiimote gives. However, even for a FPS, there's no reason for anything but awesome when it comes to the Wii's gun controls. The biggest letdown is that to point it forwards requires you to aim it like a ST:TNG Phaser, which is a pain, but after learning how to do it with the Bow and Arrow from Twilight Princess, I think I could handle a shotgun just fine.

Maybe its just me, but the only games I've heard about that I care about are the Nintendo first party ones, all of which have been postponed till whenever.

A quick tip, stay away from Rampage on Wii.

Trust me on that, and I D/L a shitload of old games. Zelda I, II and Super Mario Bros will keep me intrested for a while.
