[Discussion] General Issues for 02/2007

Post by Spyder »

Fellow Senators, I would like to open discussion for minor issues submitted either from the Senate or on behalf of a board member. Issues that would not normally require their own thread but however may merit discussion, analysis and, if necessary, escalation.

I will begin.

I think we should clamp down on catch phrases and look at summary termination on all one line responses of "I for one welcome our new * overlords."

By "catch phrases," do you mean the regurgitation of whatever fad is popular on YTMND or SomethingAweful at the moment (as in the example you gave)?

I wouldn't class the example I listed as "at the moment" popularity. It's been around since it was in a Simpsons episode.

I, for one, welcome our new senatorial overlords! :P

Personally, I don't really see a problem with this, and I am more worried that in our pursuit for posting quality, we will go too far. This is not a professional environment, but a message board, where people post for fun, and, well, it may cease to be fun.

I oppose a ban on Internet fads, but propose they are to be limited to Testing. There, they can stand on their heads, for all I care.

Have a very nice day.

Regarding the "I, for one, welcome ...", hasn't it nominally been against board policy as spam for some time now? I seem to recall mods cracking down on the saying several months ago.
A Government founded upon justice, and recognizing the equal rights of all men; claiming higher authority for existence, or sanction for its laws, that nature, reason, and the regularly ascertained will of the people; steadily refusing to put its sword and purse in the service of any religious creed or family is a standing offense to most of the Governments of the world, and to some narrow and bigoted people among ourselves.

If someone has nothing to contribute but Internet fads, then he is simply a useless spam-bot and ought to be the subject of a Senate vote anyway. Catch phrases in general are a matter of discretion, and there's no real need for an additional rule against it. No need to legislate a policy when the moderators are already capable of dealing with it.

Nevertheless, it is a valid point for discussion. Has the capite censi complained about this particular fad?

No, but I was curious to see if anyone else had any thoughts on the matter.

A more positive issue that I'd like to bring up, social initiatives. Every now and then, we get things like the SDN Weight Watchers thread popping up. I'd be curious to see if there's anything the Senate could do to support and encourage these types of activities.

If the post consists of nothing but a "_______ catchphrase" then a warning or spam-oriented titling should be had, but if the quip is made as a means to provide humor to an otherwise contributing post, we can let it slide.
Something about Libertarianism always bothered me. Then one day, I realized what it was:
Libertarian philosophy can be boiled down to the phrase, "Work Will Make You Free."

In Libertarianism, there is no Government, so the Bosses are free to exploit the Workers.
In Communism, there is no Government, so the Workers are free to exploit the Bosses.
So in Libertarianism, man exploits man, but in Communism, its the other way around!

If all you want to do is have some harmless, mindless fun, go H3RE INST3ADZ0RZ!!
