Mud volcano continues to erupt

Post by CaptainChewbacca »

I'm a bit surprised that I havn't seen a thread here, so I'd like to open some discussion.

Here are some links to an ongoing natural disaster in Indonesia. In short, a drilling company didn't do all it was supposed to, and fractured some rock in a thermal layer, triggering a massive eruption. Over the past six months thousands of tons of boiling mud have spewed out of the ground, covering many villages.

What's fascinating to me is that;
1. This is a man-made disaster of a kind I havn't seen before.
2. Nobody knows how to stop it, or if it CAN be stopped.
3. Its happening in a country so poor that they can't actually pay to fix it.

Its tragic, fascinating, and awesome all at the same time.

Huh... that's pretty damn sweet. The earth is raining forth hot liquid death in response to our attempts to mine it for oil. Quite the moody bitch, isn't she?

Still, boiling hot mud explosions are fucking awesome. Or at least, they sound awesome.

What I was going to say, but the article here says 10-11K. Still, had it occurred in an uninhabited area, it would be very cool to look at.

Volcanos do the same sort of thing, are you going to say they're not awesome also? I'm not saying the resulting destruction of people's lives and livelihoods is cool, but the natural disaster itself sounds like it would visually be very impressive.

I think most natural disasters are pretty damn awesome, that doesn't mean I think the fact they cause deaths is awesome also.

Apparently they're going to try to stop its flow by 70% by dropping giant chain-linked concrete balls into it.
But the process was halted on the first day of the operation when a steel cable hoisting the balls broke, officials quoted by the Associated Press said

Awesome <> Fun that it happened, awesome in the sense of awe-inspiring at how powerful nature is and our powerlessness against it.

Those cement balls won't work to stop the flow, only reduce the rate.

Interesting. This is not something I had ever heard of. Reminded me of the recent Guatemalan hole accident.

I am guessing that it might be a combination of man made and geological factors. Granted Indonesia is right smack in the middle of one of the most volcanic area in the world, and that Indonesia has also a fair bit of oil related resources.

Apparently, it is. Some gas prospectors drilled down into a thermal layer, around the end of May 06, and it's been shooting mud since then.

Imagine if they have modern cameras positioned to film Krakatoa! That would have been several levels of awsome! Image watching that movie in slow motion.

Well in rgular speed, Krakatoa goes BOOM. In slow-mo its more of a B-Holy-Mother-F'ing-We're-All-Going-to-Die-OOM.

Agreed with previous views. I stand in awe of natural disasters and their sheer power. Natural disasters resulting in suffering, death, and displaced civilians; not so much.

I'm always in awe over natural disators.

There fucking awsome to whatch... Like a nuke going off.

That said I wish there were no nukes plus I hate the fact people die in these explosions.

Okay the concrete balls didn't work, is there any other ideas on how to fix this mess? Other than turn it into a tourist attraction? Set up viewing platforms at reasonable safe distance and start making cash from it?

Really, when nature starts to go off in this way, you just have to let it happen. They can channel the mud into the riverways, but that's about it.

We have a large flow that seems to be out of control. There's only one solution here, and that's for Playtex to create a massive, novelty sized tampon.

Volcano still going

According to a few sources I've seen, the flow rate is actually INCREASING despite almost 300 of those balls being dropped into it.

Oh, don't worry, that area will be uninhabited pretty soon. :3
