Supreme Commander Demo released!
Moderator: Thanas
There's a fix for memory related crash issues on the GPG Forums. Its a batch file that alters the exe to allow it to use more than 2 GB of memory (going into the page file if need be), and requires a modification of the boot.ini for XP (Vista 64 required no such modification).
I tried for a couple of hours last night, and it appears to have fixed my problem.

Yeah. Its a nice thing that Vista 64-bit doesn't require that. [/pimp]phongn wrote:The /3GB switch can have some weird side-effect at times, though :/
In my current skirmish battle, its a race to see what kills the enemy AIs first - the four heavy arty guns I've got under construction, the mobile land factor that I'm building and its air and ground escorts, or the Mavor that I'm working on.
I really need to up the AI. Challenge AI just isn't Challenging.

It changes the virtual address spacing, from 2GB/2GB user/kernel to 3GB/1GB. Some times drivers don't want to play too nice with this.
MSDN has a quick overview, but it doesn't cover the of the side effects.
Edit: A new thread for the above game fix has been started on the GPG forums.

That this patch even works is a semi-good indicator that the Supreme Commander codebase is 64bit clean, hopefully. Maybe.

Arrrhhh... Why do you HAVE to play assassination mode in ranked multiplayer games? I had this long war of attrition going on, but slowly I was gaining ground/recources on my competitor. Eventually my wave of units could reach his base, starting to blow up his buildings and it looked like I couldn't possibly loose anymore, untill suddenly my ACU exploded in my bases.
The replay showed that he managed to sneak one tech 2 engineer behind my base, built a tactical cruise missile launcher behind a mountain so I couldn't see it because of the fog of war. 2 shots later my commander was dead

To be fair, you should have had tactical missile defenses in your base just in case. Even if it hadn't been assassination, your base would have been wiped out.
Speaking of, time to dive in and finish stage one.

I'm still not a huge fan of the RTS genre, but Matthew liked the game so I bought him a copy. Last night, he played a Skirmish battle as the UEF, against a Cybran AI team. He managed to capture one of the Cybran engineers, and built an entire Cybran base alongside his UEF base. He eventually overwhelmed the Cybran base with MonkeylordsArrow wrote:The challenge AI may not send a lot of units against you, damn if they don't like to build strong defenses, super weapons and nukes. Those bastards had the nukes flying last night.
And the Mavor is fuckin awesome!

Define "handle". My offhand guess is that it could, but you might have to turn the graphic settings down.Fire Fly wrote:If my computer can handle Battlefield 2, can it handle Supreme Commander?

Rake is working on an action vid of supcom and has his WIP up. It's looking awesome so far.
EDIT: As for Supcom system requirements, when they say "recommended" they REALLY mean recommended, so consider that as your minimum for an enjoyable supcom experience.

Definitely at least 1 gig of ram, and a hefty graphics card. I'm running 2 gigs of ram, a Geforce 7900, and graphics on med-high. I still have a bit of slowdown when zooming in and out, and big battles.
Fatboys + monkeylords + interceptor swarm is basically an instant win(unless they have good aim with nukes). Good luck getting it, but if you do, indeed.I'm still not a huge fan of the RTS genre, but Matthew liked the game so I bought him a copy. Even the greatest duo-core CPU won't keep the units from being so stupid that they'll sit there firing uselessly at a target to which they don't have line of sight. Nothing beats the sight of a tank firing over and over into a cliff wall because there's something behind it. Especially when it's taking fire from other enemy units at the same time. Pure genius.
It seems to me that Supreme Commander units are not just failing to take RTS tactics to the next level as promised, but they're actually quite a bit dumber than some of the RTS units in other recent games.

I gotta agree hear. I've had an army over over 200 units assembled once. The blood things wouldn't do shit accept stand there while I'm ordering an attack!Darth Wong wrote:Even the greatest duo-core CPU won't keep the units from being so stupid that they'll sit there firing uselessly at a target to which they don't have line of sight. Indeed... It's rather pathetic to watch volly after volly fail to hit a target when you have the high ground... (Targeting stationary targets at that...)
I finished the UEF campaign, because I'd gotten to the last two missions... but I don't have the heart to finish the Aeon one, or even start the Cybran...

Exactly what kind of weapons were you using there? Your targets could be behind a hill, or you could be trying to hit stuff with UEF T2 PD, which really, really suck compared to the Aeon and Cybran ones.Andrew_Fireborn wrote:Indeed... Me being somewhat ignorant of electronic matters like the Catholic Church is of molestation, I used BF2 only has a benchmark. Looking at the stats, I'm not sure if I even closely match the "recommended" figures. I could use an upgrade in my video card, processing power, and memory.wautd wrote:I didn't even realized such computers existFire Fly wrote:If my computer can handle Battlefield 2
