MGS 1 or MGS Twin Snakes.

Post by Crazedwraith »

Which is better? The original PSone version or the revamped GameCube. I ask to see whether I should get the PSone version on the cheap now. Oh wait, buy a Gamecube on the cheap with the mates I'm living with next year at uni, and get Twin Snakes then.

Opinions please.

Twin Snakes is fun and all, but the FPV mode makes it way too easy

Twin Snakes for the Wii! Just run it on the wii, don't even get a gamecube.

I like twin snakes more simply because it's fleshed out and expanded even more than MGS1 originally was, which adds to the story. First Person mode makes the game so much easier than it was intended to be, but also greatly adds to the immersion. Plus, I always found the non-aimed guns very aggrivating, so this lets snake be more of a sneaky combat ace than he was before, where he sprayed bullets too much.

PS1: The voice acting is above and beyond that in TS.

Twin Snakes was much better simply because it took everything that was cool about MGS2 (ie. what little gameplay there was, improved graphics) and married it to the far superior storyline of MGS.

As for voice acting- I never noticed a significant difference.

Yeah but we can get a gamecube for practically nothing once its split two or three ways, the same cannot be said for a Wii. Besides, shops actually have stocks of gamecubes, the same again not cannot be said of Wii.

Aside from the better graphics and new features added to TTS, I have to go with the original. It had better direction, a better score and didn't overwank capabilities. I grew up with that MGS and it's the one I adore, though MGS:TTS is in my collection all the same.

I only played TS enough to see that it looked awesome - does it change the story or characters somehow?

There are minor changes all around to the general look and feel, but the story is essentially intact with no need to retcon anything post-MGS2. I just feel that Kojima-san's direction was less fantastical and supported a more 1980s techno-thriller atmosphere than the obviously more superhuman feats seen by Snake, for instance, in TTS. There's some additional pieces added to the mission objectives, IIRC, so the game, as with the RE remake, isn't an exact copy but more a re-imagining.

Undeniably it is one of the more beautiful games in the series, but given MGS was '98-'99 and TTS was on a next-gen console, that's to be expected. I just wish they left the score and directing alone, personally.
