Crackdown

Post by Jade Falcon »

Anyone else played this 360 title? If so what do you think of it. I've got to admit that so far it's not quite as good as I thought it would be, but it's pretty fun. Whoever did the voice acting for the Los Muertos gang needs shot (literally), as it couldn't get more stereotypical.

The first island, where this gang is, is pretty much a training area. You CAN go to the others, but it's pretty hopeless. Now I'm on Island 2, which is the home of The Volk, an East European based gang. It's kinda odd to see what resembles a Scud missile launcher driving on the streets, hell I know they said they were heavily armed but... Anyway, the Volk's territory is very Old Chigaco-ish, so there's shades of Robocop creeping in there.

Developing your skills is pretty good. The main fault I can see with this game is what Just Cause suffered from..repetition, there's not enough of a variety in what to do. You have your gang lieutenants, from what I see, typically two, then there's the Captains which seem to be 3-4 and the Kingpin. You can seize control points which are essentially spawn areas. You start off with a small selection of weapons and can bring gang weapons back to the control points so they become part of your armoury.

Like Just Cause, the vehicle handling seems to be a bit 'spongy', and its all too easy to hit civilians.

The very existence of flame-throwers proves that some time, somewhere, someone said to themselves, You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I'm just not close enough to get the job done.

Any game where there's magic "Criminal" icons on the hud gets a minus two from me.

Any game where idiots just open up on my super solider self despite the fact I've got a @#$@$ anti-tank missile in my hands" gets a minus ten.

Magic floating power ups everywhere? Hell, are they only visible to me?
And a very, VERY bad weapon selection, drop this game firmly into the "rental only" section.

Played the demo. It's fun for as long as the demo lasts, but horribly limited, because the only distinction in any of the hits for the whole game is how many goons they have with them, and the particular layout of the rooftops you have to bound across to get at them.

Not buying it, even for the co-op.

Seems pretty fun. What really is going to get a bunch of people to buy this is the Halo 3 beta.

Actually yes as I recall they are indeed only visible to you through whatever weird alterations were performed on your agent.

Can't say I was very impressed by it. I found the gameplay typical and over simplified. The game build generally catered towards idiots, except it had to the nerve to rehash an older gameplay formula again. This time teh uber jumps. Like Bean said, it's a rental, no more.

Any game that lets my knock a semi-truck cab off of a bridge and into the water below via a flying side kick of doom gets my immediate seal of approval. The transforming cars are just a bonus.

Penny Arcade (IIRC) said it best, this game is "Halo 3 Multiplayer Be^H^H^H^H^H Crackdown", not a real attempt at a good game.

But it does have pretty explosions.

News flash: It's a video game.

The game isn't supposed to make realistic sense. Hence, magic floating power ups. What's wrong with it?

It doesn't make the game any less shitty.

Honestly, it's rental at best because it has lots of explosions, but not much else.

I'm sorry I like immersive, what's so hard since I'm a super soldiers, acutely going the upgrade root? Let me trick out my super solider!

Which is better from a achievement and fun factor standpoint, you magically start jumping higher, running faster because you collect magic invisible power ups, or because you just got a new pair of bionic legs? Or a frigging jet pack!

Magic floating power ups granted are featured in a number of great old games. But here we are, they don't work as well when we try and give a game a story, even a paper thin one like Crackdown.

Give you a comparison, granted Deus Ex's not that similar a game, but what if JC Denton upgraded the same way, via magic invisible power ups? That upgrade system was a jewel back in the day, and they had a frigging outstanding chance to come up with something similar or totally improve it in this game.
