Warhammer 40K MMO

This does not bode well. They're going to fuck this over sooooo hard because of how easy it would be to do this. Or they're not going to deliver what people expect.

Well, the only good thing is that the Warhammer Fantasy MMO will come out next year, well ahead of any 40k MMO, so they will hopefully be able to get some sort of feel for how to translate a GW license into a game like that. Still, the difference is notable between the two settings, and even the genres.
But yeah, I envision a game with a lot of class specific quests, especially for characters like Marines, if only make it so that when you see a level 60 Veteran Sergeant in Terminator armour walking around, you see a total motherfucking badass who has shown complete and total dedication and has earned the right to rip through armies of Chuck Norris, Vin Diesel, and Jack Bauer clones without breaking a sweat, not a whining baby who did nothing but grind and crap for sixty levels. While I suppose the company might not agree with me, I want to see hordes of fanboys bitching about the difficulty in becoming a full fledged marine and being told to play harder.

What will make or break the game?
How does it appeal to the Lowest Common Denominator.
Now if they want part of WoW's pie...the game will suck on many levels of the whole WH40K because it will be a washed up, easy as hell, look at my level 90 Chaos Daemon Prince of the Four!!!, cookiee cutter game.
If they want to make a decent WH40K game? It will be far more involved, sell to a whole shit load less people, and be only appealing to a small demograph.
Hopefully they will find a middle ground. Which is a lot harder in an MMO, then an RTS.

Here's hoping they take the example more from EVE, which said 'screw the LCD, we're goin thataway' than from WoW. Just with a less ludicrously annoying set of death consequences; it'd be sorta silly to have people in the 40k universe too afraid to risk themselves by fighting.

Yeah, it got old after 5 minutes for me. Ah, different tastes I suppose, but designing your character IS some peoples favorite part, even though it's the most significant, they're happy just to have that.Lord Pounder wrote:Yeah, it got old after 5 minutes for me. Back On-Topic: How are they going to handle female characters, I don't know much about 40k, so, are they going to make a division of Battle Sisters specifically to support SM's or just make Battle Sisters an occupation-class similair to SM, if the former are they going to further break from canon (or add onto) slightly and make a group of Battlesisters with geneseeds?

They allow women in the Imperial Guard, it's just that most regiments are gender segregated.
I had an idea for improving your character. My roommate has this XBOX 360 game that's a FPS based on the civil war. In it, you can unlock certain achievements. I think the game would be much better if you could only earn the Crux Terminatus by special acts, rather then by grinding.

I don't think you understand, my question was, since we know SM's are male only, are they going to make Battle Sisters to make it fair for the female players who would like to like to play something like a space marine but feel uncomfortuable playing male characters, I've met girls like this and men who feel someones gay if they're male and play a female character. (Though I retort with the PVP Reasoning, If I have to have someone's ass in my face all day it's going to be female )Setzer wrote:They allow women in the Imperial Guard, it's just that most regiments are gender segregated.

The Imperium of Man actually has very little gender discrimination, so the traditional MMO convention of gender mostly cosmetic should hold fine. The only big ones are the exclusively-male Space Marines and the exclusively-female Adepta Sororitas, so that balances out.
In-game Sororitas could be made to be roughly comparable to Astartes while remaining true to the fluff and being less directly powerful as a full-blown Marines. I'd envision a lot of paladin-esque abilities -- temporary invulnerability, "magical" armor and accuracy buffs, extra melee damage procs, that sort of thing.

Honestly, the game is not even in alpha, it's impossible to make any kind of guess as to how they'll end up implementing relatively trivial details like that. Especially seeing as how we don't even know what the game is about at this point. It could be very well turn out to be an MMORTS for all we know.

hmm...how the hell do you keep all the players who do not understand warhammer 40K universe in line with what they are suppose to behave?
The last thing I want to see is a space marine focusing on trading rather than fighting and etc.
Maybe...they should allow certain people to be Commissar, and well...excute all those people, imperial guards for complaining about dying for the emperor and etc.

How would that work? If you allowed unrestricted PvP you'd have Vets griefing noobies all day. The only way I could see it working is doing giving certain players who are willing to play for very long periods to volunteer to 'police' and give them a minimodship with the ability to force PvP.

That distinction could be made simply by having RP servers and non-RP servers.ray245 wrote:hmm...how the hell do you keep all the players who do not understand warhammer 40K universe in line with what they are suppose to behave?

You will always have people who do not care about the game-universe, but only at being the very best somehow possible with the game engine.
And then you have people who care a lot more about role-playing, etc.
So give them each their server and be done with it (works with WoW).

In THEORY it works with WoW . In Reality...RP servers at least have people who RP, but the enforcement leaves much to be desired.D.Turtle wrote:That distinction could be made simply by having RP servers and non-RP servers.ray245 wrote:hmm...how the hell do you keep all the players who do not understand warhammer 40K universe in line with what they are suppose to behave?

Still this would be a start...though Matrix Online did actually do something I could see WH40K doing. Having some higher up actually PLAY a character of importance. It would add fun and so much better interaction if that would happen.

Simple, want to play a marine, you are an Ultramarine, end of storyGeneral Schatten wrote:Okay another question, I'm wondering how they'll deal with Chapters, do you choose upon creation or are they going to make classes branch off into specialties.
What would be nice, if marines are PCs, which I am sure they will be. When you make a marine player, you pick your chapter at creation from a few choices, preferably the big 4; Ultras, DAs, BAs, and SWs. Each chapter having its own strengths and weaknesses that manifest as what abilities or a marine sub-class you can play that is unique to that chapter. As for getting a crux and terminator armor, make that the longest most grueling quest chain in the game. Force a player to spend multiple levels doing dozens of linked quests that result in getting the armor, but only once they hit the level cap. Hmm a Deathwing terminator saga style quest could be pretty fun actually.

Actually, though it would be a lot more work, I think they should put in all the original Chapters (plus Black Templar as per usual). Variety is always good, and those ten provide a good range of choices covering all potential angles one might want to play a Marine as: Smurf, Dark Angster, lol vampire, VIKING FROM OUTER SPACE, Mechanical Man, Cool Pyromaniac, Insane Psychotic Zealot from Hell, Creepy Spec Ops, Mongol-on-a-bike, or, of course, just plain Awesome.

Honestly, if they make Space Marines playable, I'm not even going to touch the fucking thing. Why? Because everyone and their fucking mothers will be playing space marine. If you think Horde vs. Alliance is lopsided in WoW, it will be nothing compared to the motherfucking Space Marines vs. EVERY OTHER RACE COMBINED.
Seriously, if the ration in sales/tournaments is any indication (and it is), they might as well make the fucking game "Space Marine: The MMO" and be done with it. The only way in my mind to make this game any good at all is to make the big guns NPCs. Let Space Marines be badass mobs or something, and let badass space marines be GMs, but for the love of fuck don't let them be PCs. If you balance them, nobody will want to play because they'll bitch that someone is more powerful than they are, and on top of that you're likely to get NECRON PCs. Let your brain wrap around that one. Stupid fucking kids running around as Necrons spamming "LOLZ DETH METALZ LOLZ UBER!" and shit like that.
Alternatively, if they make things at the power level they are supposed to be, there is no fucking way in hell anyone with even an ounce of combat ability is going to match up to a motherfucking space marine. What are they going to do to balance it? The short answer is nothing.
I'll admit, I may just be bitter, but really, I don't see this doing well.

Maybe they'll have a set limit on the number of Astartes and do a guild-type thing where literally only a thousand can join (And you can only become part of the Chapter when a place becomes available) and only having several chapters Of course has a fair few problems as well...

Hah. Even your way wouldn't work, and I'll tell you exactly why: There are a thousand chapters of a thousand apiece. Even if you take out all of the trademarked chapters, that still leaves you with enough spaces for an entire server to be space marine and have space left over.Dartzap wrote:Maybe they'll have a set limit on the number of Astartes and do a guild-type thing where literally only a thousand can join (And you can only become part of the Chapter when a place becomes available) and only having several chapters Of course has a fair few problems as well...
And seriously, in most MMOs you're lucky where you can find a guild with 500 unique players (no alts).
Even if you do limit it in such a fashion, people are going to bitch and moan because all of the initial players are not only higher level, but extremely badass too, and right from the get-go. Add to that the fact that no MMO ever deletes characters on account cancellation in order to entice previous players to come back, and you'll eventually have a situation where nobody can ever be a Space Marine or nobody will ever want to come back to the game if they cancel their account.
