Prince's Superbowl XLI Performance

Post by Crown »

I don't follow American football, but a mate of mine does and he said I missed out on Prince. Now, being a Princephile I had to see it, and well YouTube FTW.

Prince owning at the Superbowl Prt 1

Prince owning at the Superbowl Prt 2

Now he played his usual rock the fuck out of people classics; 'Lets go Crazy', 'Baby I'm a Star' and of course 'Purple Rain', he also covered 'Proud Mary' but it was this one unknown song (end of part 1 start of part 2) that had me scratching my head.

First of all it is fucking AWESOME, and secondly I don't know it. Now how could this be? I've got 90% of the stuff this guy has ever released (and believe me that isn't a joke, out of my 20GB iPod, 7GB is easily just Prince), and yet I didn't know this song. A little Google-Fu later and I found out the song is actually a cover, from the Foo Fighters ('The Best of You').

I also found this delightful quote;
Taylor Hawkins wrote:Dude, I have no idea why he did it, but I'd love to find out, I mean, the thought went through my head that maybe he was doing it as a sort of 'F--- you' to us, or maybe he really likes the song. Either way, it was pretty amazing to have a guy like Prince covering one of our songs — and actually doing it better than we did."

I lol'd.

Very impressive, the transition between songs was seemless. Never been a fan of Prince, but this performance goes a long way towards changing my mind. Awesome guitar work.

It sucked. It felt like the solos did not fit with the music.

I'm not a big Prince fan, but I can say he did one of the best halftime shows I've seen in the last 10 years. 1 star, doing awesome music is the way to go. Forget rotating big names in and out every 3 minutes, he did it RIGHT.

P.S. I thought he was gonna get electrocuted, between the rain and all those cords.

I'm not a very big Prince fan, but that was pretty badass. Pity the rest of the Superbowl isn't so entertaining.

To the OP, I believe All Along the Watchtower was also in the set.

He also did a cover of "Rolling on the River" near the beginning.

I love the marching band accompaniment.

By the way his birthday puts him at age 49 but he looks so young!
I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who constantly says: "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action"; who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by a mythical concept of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait for a "more convenient season."

I'm sorry, what show were you watching? And what musical training have you had?

It was a good show, especially live. Nice job, even for an artist I don't particularly care for.

And Marching Band FTW. Amazing.

What amazed the hell out of me was that he was able to pull the entire show off while in the rain! Tightly choreographed show+rain=high potential for disaster.

He's entitled to his opinion. If everyone else's contradicts his, so be it.

The title of that song is "Proud Mary", which the OP did mention.

As a Prince fan from the days before his short-lifed movie career, I was thrilled. It was the main reason I watched the game.

Prince's guitar had a penis. Whats up with that? I have a guitar.. doesn't have a penis though. Not that i'd want my guitar to have a penis.

It certainly looked cool, but my perceptions of Prince are still in the basement and stay there every time I watch "An Evening with Kevin Smith".
